## What is Kolorist?

Kolorist is a colour tool for designers and architects on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Build palettes across colour spaces, turn them into design systems, check contrast and colour vision, see colours in 3D and in the light where they will be used – and get them into the tools you already use.

FROM PALETTE TO DESIGN SYSTEM
• Roles for accent, neutral and status give colours for light and dark mode, with and without increased contrast – your brand colour is kept wherever it meets the requirements
• See the colours on buttons, fields, switches, alerts and tabs, with the contrast for each colour pair
• Tone scales with the same contrast for every hue, right in Studio
• Export as colour sets for app development, design tokens and CSS with light and dark mode – or share the design system as a link

EVERY COLOUR SPACE
• Edit in OKLCH, OKLab, CIE LCH, CIELab, HSB, HSL, RGB and CMYK
• Display P3 side by side with sRGB, Adobe RGB, CMYK or any ICC profile – mapped, never clipped
• Gamut limits on the sliders show where the colour falls outside the colour space
• Enter CMYK or RGB in the profile they will be used in, and get clean CMYK values

COLOURS AND COLOUR SPACES IN 3D
• Harmonies, palettes, gradients and colour libraries in a colour sphere, in OKLab or in CIELab
• Live 3D view of the selected colours next to the tools
• Compare the colour spaces of ICC profiles, with a choice of rendering intent
• Share as a 3D model, and see the colours in your physical surroundings through AR (augmented reality)

COLOUR LIBRARIES, ICC PROFILES AND FILAMENT
• Import your own colour charts in ASE, ACO or ACB with named tones
• Filament colours for 3D printing: more than 2,200 colours from 150 manufacturers, most of them measured – find the nearest filament
• Your own ICC profiles, synced through iCloud

GRADIENTS, TONES AND HARMONIES
• Gradients in equal perceptual steps in OKLab, with lighter and darker rows
• Harmonies from monochromatic and tone path to triad and square, on OKLCH, CIE LCH, Hering, Goethe, HSL or RYB colour wheels

CONTRAST AND COLOUR VISION
• Contrast check by WCAG 2.2, APCA or LRV, with auto-fix that adjusts the colour until it passes
• Text contrast and text colours for palettes
• Contrast between surfaces for buildings and interiors: LRV difference, Weber or Michelson – in the chosen light too
• See palettes with colour vision deficiencies, with confusion lines in a chromaticity diagram – and which colours become hard to tell apart
• Colour reports you can copy, share as a link and print

LIGHT AND COLOUR MEASUREMENT
• See colours and whole palettes in your own and standard viewing conditions
• Measure the light with the camera, and compensate the colours you pick with a grey card or reference card (beta)

APPLE INTELLIGENCE ON DEVICE (EXPERIMENTAL)
• Suggested palettes from value words, grounded in a knowledge base of more than a hundred colour concepts
Everything runs on device. Without Apple Intelligence, the suggestions are built straight from the knowledge base.

SHARE, SAVE AND EXPORT
• Share colours, palettes, gradients and harmonies as links – recipients without the app see them in their browser
• Save as ASE, ACO, design tokens, CSS, SwiftUI, GPL, SVG, hex and PDF
• Copy colours and gradients straight into design, layout and presentation apps – or as RGB values for CAD, BIM and video
• Print palettes and palette groups on A4 in CIELab

PALETTES AND ICLOUD
Collect colours and gradients in palettes and groups, synced through your private iCloud.

OPEN ABOUT METHODS
The app shows the methods it builds on, from OKLab and CIEDE2000 to WCAG and APCA, with source and explanation.

PRIVACY
No account, no analytics, no ads and no tracking. The developer collects no data.

Requires iOS 26, iPadOS 26 or macOS 26. Apple Intelligence requires a supported device.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.4 — 2026-10-17

Kolorist 1.4 shows your colours in three dimensions.

• Colours and colour spaces in 3D: harmonies, palettes, gradients and colour libraries as points in a colour sphere, in OKLab or in CIELab. Drag to rotate and pinch to zoom.
• Live 3D view of the selected colours: on iPad in landscape and on the Mac, the 3D view sits next to the tools and follows the colours as you adjust harmonies, gradients and palettes.
• Compare the colour spaces of ICC profiles, choose a rendering intent, and see where colours outside the space end up.
• Share the 3D view as a 3D model, and see the colours in your physical surroundings through AR (augmented reality).
• Gamut limits on the sliders and in the lightness and saturation field – see where the colour falls outside the colour space you have chosen.
• Confusion lines for colour vision in a chromaticity diagram, with the hard-to-tell-apart colour pairs joined.
• Reading contrast by APCA in the contrast check, with auto-fix to the level – and text and icons on colour fields in black or white by perceived readability.
• Colour reports: copy the assessments as a table, share them as a link or print them.
• Consistent menus: colours, palettes and gradients offer the same choices in the same order everywhere.
• Drag a whole palette into other apps – as a link or as hex values.
• The tone path is easier to follow: the field shows the hue of the end point you are dragging, and a colour sphere explains the path.
• Fixed: when you use a converted colour as the active colour, you now get it in the target profile’s colour model and colour space, with the converted values.

### 1.3.2 — 2026-10-12

• Kolorist now appears in English on devices that aren’t set up in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish. If you have chosen a language for Kolorist yourself in Settings, it is kept.

### 1.3.1 — 2026-10-10

Kolorist 1.3.1 takes your palette all the way to a design system.

• Design system from a palette: roles for accent, neutral and status give colours for light and dark mode, with and without increased contrast. See them on buttons, fields, switches and alerts, with the contrast for each colour pair and the WCAG requirement. Add your own roles, such as info.
• Export the design system as colour sets for app development, design tokens with aliases and one file per mode, and CSS with light and dark mode and Display P3 – with a README that explains the system. Or share it as a link: recipients see the components and colours in their browser.
• Tone scale in Studio, next to Colour and Harmony: steps 50–950 with the same contrast for every hue – step 400 holds at least 3:1 and step 600 at least 4.5:1 against white.
• Text colours in the palette if you want them: one near white and one near black, tinted with the palette’s hue.
• New contrast check: choose WCAG 2.2 or LRV. The figure and the strictest requirement the colour does not meet are shown at the top.
• Contrast between surfaces with a choice of method: LRV difference, Weber or Michelson.
• The difference between two colours with ΔE2000, ΔL*, ΔC* and Δh – copy one value or all of them as a table.
• Copy colours as RGB values for CAD, BIM and video, and as linear values for 3D apps.
• Pick a colour with the camera or from a photo right from the colour fields – or edit it in Studio and bring it back.
• New harmonies: monochromatic and tone path, where the hue arcs through lightness and saturation – and Goethe’s colour wheel.
• Palette groups: gather palettes in groups, and print, save and copy whole groups. Import ASE files as palettes.
• Reorder colours by dragging them, and show a colour from anywhere.
• Source colour space for CMYK and RGB, paper white and a choice of viewing condition for the display.
• A more focused set of models: the colour model and colour wheel with hue, value and chroma have been removed.

### 1.2 — 2026-10-05

Kolorist 1.2 brings light into the equation.

• See in light: see colours and whole palettes as they appear in the light where they will be used – your own viewing conditions or standard viewing conditions for graphic arts, workplaces, schools and museums.
• Palettes in light: see each colour on screen and in the light side by side, and which colour pairs become hard to tell apart in dim light or under fluorescent and LED lighting.
• Measure the light where you are with the camera, and save it as a viewing condition. With a grey card or reference card the illuminance is measured too.
• Colours as they really are (beta): compensate the colours you pick for the light they were photographed in, with a grey card or reference card – in photos too.
• Text contrast right in your palettes: each colour as text on the others, with WCAG requirements.
• LRV and luminance contrast in the chosen light, for buildings and interiors.
• Share as link: colours, palettes, gradients and harmonies – recipients without the app see the colours in their browser.
• Save as: choose formats by where the files will be used, and save them to a folder – including OneDrive – or share them. Now also snippets with editable gradients for layout apps.
• Filament colours for 3D printing: more than 2,200 colours from 150 manufacturers, most of them measured – find the nearest filament.
• New harmonies: analogous with a complementary accent, triad and square – and natural lightness order, where yellows become lighter and blues darker, as in nature.
• Munsell in the steps of the Munsell book.
• Gradients are copied with fewer stops, so they are easy to edit further.
• Add colours right in the list, collapse sections you don't use, and shake to undo.

### 1.1 — 2026-10-03

Kolorist 1.1 reaches more disciplines – including architecture and interiors – and makes working with palettes faster.

• Colour libraries: import your own colour charts in ASE, ACO or ACB with named tones. Colours, tones and harmonies are locked to the library’s tones, and Studio shows the tone names.
• Munsell: a new colour model with hue in steps of 2.5, value and chroma – and the Munsell and Hering colour wheels for harmonies.
• Harmony: see the whole harmony in the chosen colour space with values or tone names, with the base colour clearly marked.
• LRV: light reflectance value and surface contrast to BS 8300 and NS 11001 – for buildings and interiors.
• Rec. 2020 and ProPhoto RGB as built-in colour spaces.
• Your own ICC profiles and colour libraries are gathered in one place, imported in one step and can be deleted in the app.
• Palettes at hand on large iPads: move colours where you need them with drag and drop.
• Colours you pick from the camera and photos are kept until you decide to save them.
• Faster work with palettes: use a colour directly, and critique, check contrast and print whole palettes.
• Undo everywhere, including ⌘Z on a keyboard.
• Panels can be collapsed and reordered, and values hidden and sorted – the layout syncs.
• Better palettes from value words: built on harmony principles with legible contrast.
• A palette critique now shows what it is based on.
• Gradients in palettes, and “Copy to” for gradients: Figma, Sketch, Affinity, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Pages, Keynote, Numbers, CSS and SwiftUI.
• Print a palette on A4 – CIELab swatches with names and values – or save it as a PDF.
