Software Control Application

MULTIPLE MODES MEAN FLEXIBILITY
There are three main modes of GEC5 operation. Each of these can be selected within the software interface at the teacher’s station:

Lecture Mode:
Present material and instruction in a lecture format. All students hear the teacher’s microphone and instrument or computer allowing for a captive and quiet audience.

- Tap the Student Instrument/Student Stations button and allow the students to play along.
- Tap and hold to exclude a student from the lecture for independent work.
- Double tap to bring a student into the lecture for comments or questions.

Practice Mode:
Practice mode is used when the students are working independently. Each student hears only his or her own instrument or computer. In Practice Mode, the teacher has the option of “eavesdropping” on the student and initiating 2 way communication with the student for individualized instruction.

- Double-tap to eavesdrop, double-tap again to talk
- Tap All Call to call attention to the group
- Single tap to clear eavesdrop
- Performance Mode allows the teacher to hear all of the students and their instruments at the same time while each student can only hear themselves, their instrument and the teacher’s audio.

Group Mode:
This mode is used when students are working together in groups (two or more student workstations in any conceivable configuration). Each student in a group can hear his or her own instrument as well as the instruments or computer and microphone of the other members of their group.

- Tap and hold to select students to put in a group, then select New Group
- Recall Auto Group Presets
- Make your own custom presets for each class

*This app must be used with the GEC5 hardware system available from an authorized Korg Dealer.

*2023-08-08*

Can’t imagine teaching my class without this! It has truly been a lifesaver...especially for someone who isn’t great with technology LOL!

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work on iPad

*2023-02-03*

I’m disappointed in this app. The whole reason we invested in this system was so I could be mobile in my classroom and listen to my students play their keyboard through the headphones. I have emailed the developers multiple times and still get the same answer that they are working on it. Right now the entire system is useless to me.

**Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback. We are pleased to announce that a new iOS version of our KORG GEC5 Control App is now available for download. We appreciate your patience as we worked to address all compatibility issues with the most recent iOS updates. All bugs reported were fixed, and we encourage you to update your GEC5 Control App before the Fall semester begins.

As always, please reach out to Korg USA Product Support or SoundTree if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you!

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.7 — 2023-07-13

Bug fixes allow users of iOS 12-16.5 to control the KORG GEC5 hardware with this control app.

### 1.6 — 2020-05-05

Along with some bug fixes we have also added a new selection for low and high-gain microphones, new tone selection capability for use with the SoundKEY keyboard and a new default feature that allows for the system to go into Practice Mode even after the instructor logs out of the app.

### 1.3 — 2018-02-07

Exciting new Performance Mode added to this new version!
Performance Mode is a feature added to allow the teacher to hear all of the students and their instruments at the same time while each student can only hear themselves, their instrument and the teacher’s audio. To use this new feature simply launch your app, select your class, go into Practice Mode and tap on the Performance button.

Bug Fixes in this release:
Previous issue: When excluding a student from lecture mode, the teacher’s audio gets muted for that student. However, if you double click on another student and bring them into the lecture, the excluded student will still hear the double-clicked student’s audio. Resolution: Fixed so an excluded student stays excluded at all times and only hears their own audio while using the excluded feature.

Previous issue: In a few cases, the audio in the Teacher Unit would become noisy and deteriorate to an unusable state. Resolution: New Teacher Unit firmware distributed with this SCA release fixes the problem.

### 1.2 — 2017-03-15

Bug Fixes in this release:

Arbitrary system reset
Issue: A user site reported that the GEC5 system was arbitrarily resetting while in use when connected to the school’s network
Resolution: A third-party device on the school’s network was sending out a broadcast message that should have been ignored by the GEC5. However, a bug was discovered in the GEC5 code that caused the GEC5 system to handle the message improperly and reset the system. This bug has been fixed.

Student Interface improper port identification
Issue: Multiple user sites reported that one or more Student Interfaces were falsely assuming the wrong student location, resulting in the wrong audio going to that station.
Resolution: On system startup, each Student Interface uses a simple algorithm to ‘learn’ which port in the Teacher Unit it is plugged into. A bug was found in the startup routine that occasionally resulted in the wrong port association. This bug has been fixed.

Factory Reset Qualification
Issue: Performing a Factory Reset requires reset confirmation by typing “yes” (case insensitive) into the space provided before the factory reset would take place. However, in some cases the operating system would auto-fill in the word “yes “ with a trailing space and the factory reset would not happen.
Resolution: The Factory Reset function will now ignore any leading or trailing blank spaces in the “yes” confirmation response.

Enhancements in this release

Issue: In previous releases, the user had the ability to rename the Default Class to a custom name, resulting in a departure from the concept of a default class concept.
Resolution: The Default Class can no longer be renamed. Note that if a user has renamed the Default Class when using a previous release of the app, that custom name will persist even after upgrading to this release. However, if a System Reset is performed or if the user renames the Default Class back to “Default Class”, the name will no longer be able to be changed.

Issue: In previous app releases, when the setup wizard was complete the app went immediately into Lecture mode without indication that the setup wizard was complete.
Resolution: The completion of the setup wizard is now indicated with a dialog box that announces the end of the wizard and provides the options to either log out to add Teachers and Classes, or cancel to go straight to Lecture mode.

### 1.01 — 2016-04-19

The "Room Out" and "Record Out" are muted when changing modes. Additional bug fixes.
