## What is Kotoba?

Everything you need for the JLPT in one app. The dictionary and the questions are inside the app, so it works with no internet — and there is no account and no server.

· 2,230 kanji, with on/kun readings and stroke-order animation

■ It works out when to review
Every card you see is scheduled by spaced repetition (SM-2). Rather than raw accuracy, it estimates the probability that you actually know an item (BKT), so lucky guesses are told apart from real knowledge. Your weak list therefore holds what you do not yet know, not merely what you got wrong.

■ It works backwards from your exam date
Set the date and it calculates how many cards a day you need from the time left, the items remaining and what you have mastered. If there isn't enough time, it says so. It will not call an impossible plan achievable.

■ No internet needed
The dictionary and the questions come with the app when you install it. It works on a plane and on the underground. Your study history stays on this device and is sent nowhere.

■ Free tier
· Vocabulary: all of N5 plus a preview of higher levels, 30 cards a day
· Kanji: all of N5 and N4
· 20 grammar points, 10 ordering questions and 2 reading passages per level
· 1 mock exam · 10 pronunciation playbacks a day
Premium removes every one of those limits and opens weak-item diagnosis and the exam planner.

Vocabulary and kanji are derived from JMdict / KANJIDIC2 (EDRDG, CC BY-SA 4.0), example sentences from the Tanaka Corpus (CC BY 2.0 FR), and stroke orders from KanjiVG (© Ulrich Apel, CC BY-SA 3.0). Grammar, reading passages, ordering questions and all glosses are original works.

No JLPT past papers are used. This app is not affiliated with JEES or the Japan Foundation. Level assignments are estimated from kanji grade and usage frequency, as the official lists are not published, and are a guide only.

Kotoba Premium is an auto-renewable subscription. Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase and renews automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Manage or cancel it in Settings > Apple Account > Subscriptions.
