Kylin teaches Mandarin on the new HSK 3.0 syllabus, in force since July 2026. Most published word lists are still the older ones. Three levels in all: 1,011 words and 655 characters, with 22 graded readings. HSK 1 is free and complete. All 300 words, all 248 characters, the grammar behind them, and eight short readings built only from what you have already met. HOW IT TEACHES You produce the answer. Multiple choice happens once, the first time an item appears. After that you say it out loud, or you write it by hand. Picking the right option out of four is an easier thing than remembering, and only remembering survives a conversation. Nothing appears out of nowhere. A sentence never holds more than one piece you have not been taught, so reading stays reading instead of turning into decoding. The pace follows you. A run of correct answers speeds things up, and a lapse slows it down. An item leaves your queue when you can recall it, not because you tapped past it. CHARACTERS, PROPERLY Every character is taken apart into the pieces it is actually built from, and the pieces are taught before the characters that use them. Stroke order is animated, and the characters you write by hand are graded stroke by stroke. Tones get a drill of their own. 妈 and 马 are one syllable and two different words, so the tone is the word. The drill works in pairs, because the mistakes that last are the ones between two tones in a row. Each one carries a short story tying its pieces to its meaning, and a painting of that story to remember it by. NOTHING TO PROTECT Miss a day and nothing breaks. Your reviews move, and the app stays quiet about it. What gets measured is what you can still recall weeks later, which is the only figure worth anything. YOUR OWN LANGUAGE, WHERE IT COUNTS Word meanings, character stories, grammar notes and reading glosses are written in English, Vietnamese, Thai, Korean, Indonesian, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Russian, Italian, French and Turkish. The app starts faster on a slow connection: the first screen no longer waits for the network, and if you are signed in, your progress syncs on its own once you are back online. Plus a few small fixes. ### 1.0.3 — 2026-09-01 Writing practice used to start from the first character every time. Now it brings up what is actually due, then a few new ones, so the character you are about to forget is reachable without walking the whole level. The home screen is new: a ring in the middle for how much of the level has stuck, and the HSK levels laid out as a road. Teaching notes now break into paragraphs instead of arriving as one block, so the tone tips read properly. ### 1.0.2 — 2026-08-26 Some characters were being taught with the wrong meaning: 口 came out as opening instead of mouth, 机 as desk, and 会, 可以 and 能 all shared one meaning. Hundreds of those are corrected, in every language the app teaches in, and six characters now carry the reading the syllabus means. The menu leads with reviews and its numbers say what they count. On a tablet the mnemonic painting is no longer cut off. ### 1.0.1 — 2026-08-25 Your progress can leave this phone now. Sign in with Apple or Google and your words, your reviews and your levels come back on a new one, or after a reinstall. Tracing picks out the stroke it is asking for in gold, with its starting dot and the direction it runs.
