## What is Kyoto Honne Quiz?

In Kyoto, an ordinary remark often carries a second meaning.
Would you like some tea over rice? How very nice. I will think about it.
This app gives you the line, and four readings of it. One of them is what was meant.

Ten questions a round. Get all ten and you earn the title of Bubuzuke Specialist.

WHAT IS IN IT — 200 questions across eight areas
- Bubuzuke (saying no): the long way round to asking you to leave
- Is that a compliment? Praise-shaped remarks that are not praise
- Living next door: noise, boundaries and bins
- Shops and business: first-time customers, haggling, and I will think about it
- Office and school: the polite machinery of meeting rooms and staff rooms
- Outsiders and the old city: where Kyoto begins, which generation you are, when you arrived
- Family and relatives: memorial services, the family home, and are you still single
- Money and appearances: the going rate, the wrapping, the bill, and where you work

THE EXPLANATIONS ARE THE POINT
Right or wrong, every question comes with a note on why the phrase works the
way it does: where it came from, how a refusal is counted, why the second cup
of tea means something the first one did not. The score fades; these stay.

FIVE LANGUAGES
Japanese, English, Korean, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese.
The Kyoto line itself is always shown in Japanese whichever you choose, with a
romanised reading beneath it — so it works whether you are visiting Kyoto or
learning the language.

A NOTE
This app turns well-known sayings and folklore about how people speak in Kyoto
into a quiz, for entertainment. It is not intended to mock any real person or
organisation, and several explanations record one account among others.
