## What is L & N?

Do light and night sound too similar? L & N gives you a small place to practise the difference, one pair at a time.

START BY LISTENING

Choose a pair and a round of 3, 5 or 7 words. Tap what you heard in order, then check each answer. Hear the two words again before trying another round.

TRY SAYING IT

Listen to the model, record one word and see what the recognizer heard. The feedback shows the sound cues behind the result, with a waveform to help you spot silence or recording problems.

HEAR YOUR OWN PROGRESS

Replay a saved take on its own or after the model. Your practice history stays on your device, so you can return to earlier attempts. Available storage still matters; clearing app data removes saved takes.

THREE PRACTICE LANGUAGES

Practise English, Mandarin or Cantonese. Choose your interface separately: English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese or Cantonese. Explore a 3D mouth cutaway for tongue placement and airflow, or use the compact Apple Watch listening drill.

Audio examples use synthetic voices. No account, ads or advertising trackers. Speech recognition uses Apple's speech services; whether it runs locally depends on the device and its settings.

L & N is a practice tool, not a clinical assessment. The feedback and mouth model help you explore a sound; they do not measure or diagnose your speech.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.0.9 — 2026-09-29

Practice controls stay in place while recording, scoring and trying again, with changing feedback below them.

Saved recordings are more resilient, with clearer storage warnings and smaller replay files when beneficial. Existing recordings are preserved.

In Listen, hold a word pair to repeat it continuously, then tap Stop. Playing indicators no longer move the results.

Update without uninstalling to keep your practice history.

### 1.0.8 — 2026-09-26

Tap a listening word pair to hear its two words back to back. Practice arrows now move directly to the next word while keeping your selected L or N sound; the L/N buttons still switch between partners.

The studio model ignores repeat taps until both pronunciations finish. Changing words or tabs stops the old example, and playback errors recover cleanly.

Corrects playback of bundled listening clips on Apple devices.

Improves recovery when pair audio is interrupted: repeat taps and returning to a previous pair no longer have to wait indefinitely for a stalled player. Failed playback can be retried without restarting the app.

Also includes progressive recording history and optional update reminders. Update in place to keep device-local recordings; previously deleted recordings cannot be recovered. Includes the watchOS companion.

### 1.0.6 — 2026-09-23

Chinese practice hears you properly. Mandarin and Cantonese attempts are judged by the syllable you said, so a homophone written with another character still counts, romanized transcripts are understood, and an attempt is always scored. Cantonese on iPhone now uses Apple's Cantonese dictation.

### 1.0.5 — 2026-09-22

Listen tab: two buttons under the answers play each word of the pair on its own. Also includes the 28 new Mandarin and Cantonese pairs (59 in total).

### 1.0.4 — 2026-09-21

28 new listening pairs: every Mandarin and Cantonese final that takes both l- and n- now has a same-tone minimal pair with verified studio audio (59 pairs in total).
