## What is Language Story?

Language Story turns language learning into a story you play together.

Pick a short dialogue scenario in the language you're learning, get matched with a partner, and take turns recording your lines. Make choices at
branching moments to shape how the story unfolds. Build vocabulary and confidence by actually speaking — not just tapping flashcards.

  WHY LANGUAGE STORY WORKS

  • Real practice with a real person — not AI roleplay or solo drills
  • Asynchronous — record when it's your turn, no scheduled calls required
  • Bite-sized stories — 5 to 10 minute sessions that fit a coffee break
  • Branching paths — your choices change what happens next
  • Built around how adults actually learn: in context, with another voice on the line

  HOW IT WORKS

  1. Sign in and pick a language you're learning
  2. Browse short stories matched to your level (A1 to C1)
  3. Find a partner — either by accepting an open invite or sending one
  4. Record your character's lines one at a time, in your target language
  5. Get notified when your partner takes their turn

  • Adult learners stuck on the speaking gap
  • Self-studiers who want practice with another human, not just an app
  • Language exchange partners looking for more structure than free chat
  • Anyone who learns better through stories than worksheets

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.12.0 — 2026-08-29

What's new in 1.12.0:
• Start where the story starts. New learners now begin at chapter one of a real course in their language, instead of being dropped into a random scene.
• Hear any word. The Vocab tab has a play button on every entry, so you can check a pronunciation while you're reading the story that taught it.
• Shake your phone to report a problem. If something breaks mid-story, tell us right there instead of hunting through settings.
• Made for tablets and iPad. Screens no longer stretch a phone layout across a big display.
• Learning English in English? The second line under each sentence is now a usage note that explains the idiom, rather than a copy of the line above it.
• Story links open in the app instead of the browser.
• Changing your level takes you to a story at that level, rather than leaving you in the old one.
• Clearer notifications, and an invite that tells you your recorded voice travels with the link.
• Behind-the-scenes improvements and fixes.

### 1.11.0 — 2026-08-08

What's new in 1.11.0:
• Press and hold the record button to record your line — or tap to start and stop, just like before.
• A new "Meet your cast" screen at the start of each chapter shows who you’re playing and who you’ll meet.
• Behind-the-scenes improvements and fixes.

### 1.10.0 — 2026-07-16

Your story just got a full cast.

- Stories now feature four characters across both sides of the conversation, with color-coded nameplates so you always know who's speaking, whose line is yours, and who makes each choice.
- Narration now appears and plays in Spanish as well as English - listen to either, tap to replay.
- Finished your story? Celebrate, then move straight up to the next level or start another story at your level.
- Voice recording is faster and far more reliable, especially right after a line plays.
- Bug fixes and polish throughout the story player.

### 1.9.0 — 2026-06-25

- Give your invites a head start: when you invite a friend to a story, record your opening line so they have a voice message waiting the moment they join.
  - Conversations feel more alive: partner messages now play automatically.
  - A smoother start when playing solo, plus reliability and performance improvements.

### 1.8.0 — 2026-06-22

- A guided learning path: stories are now organized into units you move through, with a progress bar and badges as you complete each one.
  - Play history: see who you've played a story with before, and the stories you've played together on a friend's profile.
  - Smarter invites: you now see "Invite sent" for anyone you've already invited to a story, and an existing open invite shows up so you don't send duplicates.
  - Find a partner matches you with people learning your language at your level - invite them straight into a story.
  - Fixes: solo stories now always play through to their real ending (they were sometimes cut short early), plus performance improvements.
