Hershel Layton has a detective, mastermind son with a Jekyll/Hyde personality disorder & unresolved past, and you play as his assistant, allowing you to work with him through Lucy Baker, flipping the convention of the Layton series in which you play as Layton and not Luke on its’ head. On paper, this is a great game and perfect for the visual novel genre as it adds gameplay mechanics similar to various Ace Attorney cases. However, dated references in place of genuine jokes or enriching dialogue, limited access to players being that this is a mobile-only game, and poor choices towards POC representation all hold this game back from possibly joining the rest of its franchise amongst the greats. Interesting to see that it got an update last week for the first time in years. Hope to see this game given a second chance with rewritten dialogue, new animations, and a longer playtime. ### 2/5 — Music/Sound Glitch *2024-10-03, version 1.0.2* I just installed the game when I remembered I bought it years ago. It only remembered I bought one pack and not both which was unfortunate. I ended buying it again to play the game fully but the music and soundtrack is completely gone. It kills the mood that was set for the game. I wouldn’t have spent the money if I had known I’d be bombarded with errant punctuation marks and grammar mistakes, just because one of the characters is from somewhere in South America. ### 5/5 — Best mystery game ever *2022-10-23, version 1.0.2* I got this game when it was new, and it was so much fun I have been looking for something like it ever since. I’m still looking in 2022 and I haven’t found another that’s this good! ### 4/5 — Its like if Ace Attorney was actually fun *2022-10-01, version 1.0.2* As if the sheer amount of times the Professor proved how much better he was than Phoenix in “Professor Layton Vs Phoenix Wright” wasn’t enough, here comes his son to star in a game that does everything Ace Attorney ever did a million times better. My only complaint is that Level-5 is no longer publishing games over here. And to be honest I am really disappointed. It is an amazing game with a good story and idea overall but I have to rate this 3 stars because of the payment to enjoy this game. ### 3/5 — Cute, but way too easy/linear *2022-04-29, version 1.0.2* Wouldn’t particularly recommend for experienced or hardcore mystery genre enthusiasts. Holds your hand through all of the cases, and none of them are that tricky to begin with outside of the game simply withholding information. In all of the cases except for the very end of the last one, they circle all of the clues for you to find, you don’t have to work at all. No consequences for being wrong at any point. Alfendi usually hands you the answer a couple of minutes in, regardless of the choices you make. But, super cute artwork and character design in the typical Layton series fashion. Characters are a bit one-dimensional. And a sweet concluding scene. ### 4/5 — Kept me hooked!! *2022-03-08, version 1.0.2* This game was exactly what I was looking for! It kept on edge and wanting to know more with each level. I don’t care for the morbidity and swearing. But all in all, a really good game! Love timajae white. ### 1/5 — Quality lacking *2024-12-27, version 1.0.2* The original Professor Layton Games (that this is based off) I really enjoyed. This I did not. This crime scene game was poorly executed. It jumps around, the writing is poor. I had no will to continue after the first case. At the beginning you’re asked right after looking at the crime scene who you think did it, but you can’t say your reasoning and your answer makes no difference. You just have to go through the process anyways, and the process makes no sense - you don’t even get to interview all the suspects. (The black suspect, and only POC, somewhat resembles Mr T, and says “I pity the fool” multiple times, for some reason…😒) ### 1/5 — Very slow and boring *2024-07-16, version 1.0.2* I prefer New York Mysteries, Meridian 157, and the Glitch games. I thought I would enjoy solving crimes if I could just get through the dialogue, but the crime solving is bad and makes no sense. It’s not clever and there are no tricks or twists, it just doesn’t make any sense. Really highlights the different regional accents in the UK. I absolutely love the way the Scouse accent is written, and that makes the little Scouse delivery boy one of my favourite characters. The spelling of the words and the tone accurately reflects the way people speak in different parts of the UK. Amazing writing.
