### 3/5 — Way too much dialogue

*2022-07-10, version 1.0.0*

This game is overloaded with unnecessary dialogue between the characters. It kind of makes the game boring because the storyline is not interesting at all. More puzzles, less talking is the way it should be.

### 2/5 — Way too much dialogue

*2022-05-30, version 1.0.0*

I don’t mind brief instructions but I’ve only played one puzzle in thirty minutes of “play time,” which is really nothing but reading. Reading the same instructions over and over and over. Maybe a little story and dialogue but nothing but reading. So unnecessary to reiterate the same instructions repeatedly. I deleted the game. Too boring

### 3/5 — It’s good but

*2022-05-21, version 1.0.0*

To be honest, I kinda like this game a bit it’s fun like the original but I prefer the original more it was more fun and challenging and how things were done. This one is different I’m tryna like it more but the thing about it is that it’s a lot harder than the original takes a while to solve the puzzles unless I look them up, and it takes a lot time I wanted this for my 3ds, since I Heard- there’s professor Layton games for the 3ds. I might still want it but it’s kind of pointless still tryna get into it.

### 2/5 — Not well done

*2021-09-26, version 1.0.0*

The opening cut scene was just black with text (on iPhone). I don’t mind the dialogue and story. Even if it was cheesy. However, the clicking mechanism was annoying. Why show the ability to move on the map, then pull up the track screen just so you have to close the track screen? Also, the puzzles have horrible directions. The solution to the ladder one made no sense based upon the directions. Most the puzzles were bad up to that point, so I decided to stop playing. I was really looking forward to this game, as I loved the original.

### 2/5 — Way too much story. Disappointing

*2021-09-26, version 1.0.0*

I’ve bought and played the Layton games in Nintendo before and absolutely loved them. The puzzles were challenging and finding hidden coins and puzzles. I was so excited to see this new game and I can’t bring myself to play anymore.
I’ve got to a total of 7 puzzles in over an hour because if the constant story that is not only uninteresting but unnecessary. There’s no way to skip and could be at beat two or three speech bubbles. I just timed me having to constantly two the screen to skip through the chat after puzzle 7 for 6 minutes just to get to the next puzzle.
Very very disappointing

### 1/5 — Not compatible with the iPad Pro

*2021-09-23, version 1.0.0*

If you have an iPad Pro, the videos show simply a black screen. The audio plays, and the subtitles are visible, but you don’t get the video.

### 2/5 — Bad

*2021-09-22, version 1.0.0*

This game is laughably bad. The puzzles are okay, but everything else just makes me want to gouge out my own eyes. Really? The guy’s name is Ernest? He’s really motivated? Literally every name is just a bad pun. The story seems kind of stupid if you ask me. O no big Ben’s hour hand was stolen? Nobody knows what time it is? Ignore the other faces. Doesn’t Big Ben bong the time really loudly every hour? Apparently not I guess.

### 2/5 — Boring

*2021-09-21, version 1.0.0*

This game is 90% story and 10% puzzles. The story isn’t even interesting and I couldn’t even make it passed the tutorial it was so agonizing.

### 2/5 — Cutscenes don't work

*2021-09-19, version 1.0.0*

I've started playing the game and the opening cutscenes won't work. I get the audio and subtitles but all I see is a black screen. Please fix this

### 3/5 — Puzzles Only

*2021-09-17, version 1.0.0*

There should really be a puzzles only mode. The story isn’t interesting to me at all so I find myself just mindlessly tapping to try to get through the dialogue and find the next puzzle. It’s not like the puzzles have anything to do with the story anyway, so you should really have the option to skip the story if you want to.

### 2/5 — Too much dialogue

*2021-09-17, version 1.0.0*

Ive played a lot of Layton games and I became irritated with this one. There’s just way too much dialogue. I just gave up trying to play the game because it takes too long to get to puzzles.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Black screens and no video

*2023-02-28, version 1.0.0*

This game is completely broken. The videos are just black screens with subtitles on bot iPhone and iPad. I thought Apple Arcade games were supposed to be verified as quality games.

### 1/5 — Don’t download it’s a waste of time.. it’s 90% story line talk 10% game play

*2022-07-12, version 1.0.0*

You can skip through the movies then there is nothing but talk that you can’t skip just constantly tap to try to make it faster do 1 small task then another movie you can skip than more ridiculous talk you can’t skip.. another small task and another movie and more talk.. get the message 🤣 there is no game play it’s all wasted on story line not worth time of energy it’s just a huge annoyance..

### 1/5 — Make a fast forward version

*2022-03-28, version 1.0.0*

No reason to have this much dialogue. If you wanted to write a book, make something for audible. This is supposed to be a puzzle game. Ridiculous

### 1/5 — Too much talking

*2022-03-15, version 1.0.0*

I hate phone games that I have to listen and read so much on. I don’t want an hour long video, I don’t want an audio book. I just want to play

### 1/5 — Black screen

*2022-02-21, version 1.0.0*

I just got a 5th generation iPad Pro and after the initial Apple Arcade screen, it just shows a black screen. Can’t get past this screen to even try the game.

### 1/5 — Rage

*2021-10-19, version 1.0.0*

I have never wanted to rage-quit and throw my phone across the room quite as hard as playing the “tutorial” of this game. I had to look up how to do it which is not encouraging when the tutorial should be easy. Then I finally got it and set the game aside. When I came back, it made me do the tutorial again! And I CANNOT get that tutorial completed. It’s so frustrating. The animation is cute and the voice-acting seems good but my goodness, this tutorial is a nightmare.

### 1/5 — Videos don’t work on iOS 15

*2021-10-15, version 1.0.0*

Just got an iPhone 13 pro max, downloaded the game, and none of the videos work. All I get is audio and a black screen.

### 1/5 — I cannot

*2021-10-12, version 1.0.0*

There is so much dialogue. I like puzzles and the art is cute but good lord it is not possible for me to care any less about the story. Plot? I don’t need no stinkin’ plot. Give me puzzles or give this app death (delete from iPhone).

### 1/5 — What in the world is this?

*2021-10-10, version 1.0.0*

So I play, watch some videos, cute.. then I go to 10 plus minutes of dialogue.. after that was done I was like “great! Now the game starts!” Nope.. more dialogue. I lost interest in this game very quickly. I have to agree with others the story isn’t interesting enough to have you waiting 10 minutes to play the next puzzle. The one puzzle I played was pretty fun but then it became a chore.

### 1/5 — As a big fan of the original - poorly done

*2021-09-30, version 1.0.0*

This game does not keep the faith of the original game. Half the puzzles don’t make any sense, and to even get to one of them you have to click through half a novel. Even the story feels hollow. The “mysteries” are very boring, like “who stole a piece of film during a movie?”. I have replayed the last Layton games multiple times and I couldn’t even get through half of this one. It really bums me out to have to leave a review like this but I wanted to make sure other people don’t waste their time.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Really Fun:)

*2022-11-11, version 1.0.0*

I really like this game, I find it good for whenever I have nothing to do. Good and fun brain games, though some can be quite confusing. The only thing is that more outfits for earnist and yourself.

### 5/5 — NEEDS Level-5 Sign In and Lvl-5 Cloud Save

*2022-06-06, version 1.0.0*

This app is also purchasable ; and I did so upon release.

Within the non Apple Arcade version, there is a way to link your save file to a Level 5 account.

After beating the game and completing all side quests, collecting all items, finishing mini-games, etc, I’d like to load my old save file in this version.

That way I can access any new content and have my save files be iCloud saved as well.

Please add this feature! Thank you!

### 5/5 — Great addition to the franchise

*2022-05-30, version 1.0.0*

Layton fans will feel right at home with this one. There’s definitely a lot of dialogue, the puzzles can definitely be challenging and seem deceptive. If you’re looking for a charming, cozy visual novel, with clever puzzles, and quirky character design I can’t recommend this enough!

### 5/5 — Great!

*2022-05-07, version 1.0.0*

I like everything about this puzzle game, except for the puzzle part. I couldn’t get past the first level, even with every single hint!! 😔 which is awful because I would love this game, the graphics are beautiful, the stories fun, just the puzzles are way too difficult! Unplayable game, just keep working at it, and maybe it’ll reach my expectations. 🫶🏻

### 5/5 — I like it

*2022-01-27, version 1.0.0*

It’s good. But I have a question for puzzle 76. It says 10 students and everyone voted and none were invalid. If so, why does candidate A have 5 votes and candidate B have 4 votes? That means the answer should be 1. Or this question should be invalid.

### 5/5 — Please Korean!!!

*2021-12-10, version 1.0.0*

I know this game has korean but, ingame I can’t see it. Please update pleeeeeeeez

### 5/5 — Great Port

*2021-12-05, version 1.0.0*

This port of a 3SD classic is fantastic. The puzzles are a great challenge and it has a cozy and warm aesthetic and atmosphere. I noticed a lot of the reviews are complaining about the story in the game, and while it is a bit silly, its cute overall. This isn’t a typical puzzle only iOS or iPad game. It’s a port of a $40 3DS and Switch game, so go in expecting a classic game with story connecting the puzzles together.

### 5/5 — I thought it was charming and perfect for a mobile format

*2021-10-27, version 1.0.0*

Maybe it’s because I’m new to the Layton world, but I absolutely adored this game. Katrielle is a treat, the tone is silly but likable, and the story is quirky in an endearing way.

And then when you consider the mobile phone format I think it’s really well suited. It’s very pick up for a bit, get through a portion, put down again friendly, in the way you want mobile games to be. I don’t necessarily want a full commitment type of game on my phone (or iPad) and this was a good mix where I could play for 8 hours straight, or just for 30 minutes.

There are some quirks in the UI that could’ve been handled better, and I found the lack of ability to play in a landscape mode odd. But not enough to detract from my enjoyment.

Actually makes me want to go try out the other Layton games, though based on other reviews I’m worried they have less story to them…

### 5/5 — LOVE ITTT~

*2021-10-08, version 1.0.0*

I LOVE this game. I’m not much of a puzzle person, so being able to skip most of the puzzles is great for me. Plus, I really like the storylines. I think that they did an amazing job recreating Layton. (๑╹ω╹๑ )

### 5/5 — Keeps the Original Spirit!

*2021-09-14, version 1.0.0*

As someone who played these games on the DS, the app versions have stayed true to the original Layton games and I love them! I’ve replayed all of the first three Prof. Layton games and all the fun and magic is still there. With this new addition to the story, the feel of the game is the same! The puzzles that ask you to think outside the box, the movie scenes that keep you involved in a story, and the characters that are constantly confounded by Layton’s wit! I enjoyed every bit of this, and I hope we get another chapter to tie up some very important loose ends. I also hope we get the other three original Layton games!
