### 3/5 — Son

*2022-05-04*

### 3/5 — No sound

*2019-11-19*

Sound in this game doesn’t work on my iPhone 8 Plus so I’m not buying the full version because I’m worried it will be the same. I’m disappointed because I really wanted the game.

### 3/5 — Too much narrative

*2019-09-17*

Too much narrative, and took up quite a lot of space on phone. only did one puzzle before i lost the will to live trying to skip the talking. Not the same as nintendo ds as i had hoped.

### 2/5 — Déçue

*2019-03-06*

### 2/5 — Fine, but too expensive

*2019-02-05*

I’ve always loved the Professor Layton games, and this one is reasonably fun. Some of the puzzles are a bit silly, as they are like riddles and there could literally be any number of random answers and they’ve just chosen what they thought it should be - I like the ones with an actual, logical solution. I suppose it doesn’t matter too much though as you do have quite a lot of hints available so you can use them without being very conservative.

I’ve seen some people complaining about the dual screen (emulating the ds), but it seems to me that this has a functional reason and that it would have been pretty hard for the game designers to make the game as a single touch screen. You can’t use your finger as the pointer to search for things directly on the image because your finger would be covering up the area that you’re looking at. It’d be impossible for you to see when the magnifying glass changed colour (to denote that there was something of interest to click on there) if your finger was right on top of it.

The worst thing about this game and the main reason I give it only two stars is the price. Nearly $25 for one case?? I was actually shocked to find this out - and you are only shown that you have to pay for the next ones after you have played the first. If I’d known that from the outset I wouldn’t have played at all and tried to get a refund on the game instead. It took me 1 and a half hours to play through that content. As someone who earns less than that in that amount of time I can say that I was extremely unsatisfied and felt that it was a huge waste of money. I won’t be purchasing any more cases and doubt I’ll be buying more Layton games after this. Maybe it seems harsh to give two stars to a game that I thought was okay, but given that I was only able to play 1/12th of the content (there are 12 cases, 11 of which you have to pay extra for) I don’t feel like I am able to give a higher rating.

I just checked into the game to see if I could find out how much it would actually cost to buy all of the content, so I could write it in my review, and now the game is freezing whenever I try to go into purchasing area. So that’s 👌🏽

### 3/5 — Good concept

*2019-02-03*

I used to play on the Nintendo and this was brilliant. This feels clunky and slow by comparison. Far too much time on inane conversation between characters. I gave up through sheer boredom.

### 4/5 — mitigée...

*2019-01-28*

*2018-10-25*

Das Spiel ist zu lange am landen 😬

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — DONT OVERTHINK

*2022-02-12*

THE PROLOGUE WAS SO EASY I THINK ME AND MY FAMILY WERE JUST BEING THICK.

### 1/5 — Read

*2021-07-26*

Too much too read. Get on with the game & less reading

### 1/5 — Don’t buy!! Go to full game instead

*2020-07-23*

Don’t buy this! It’s just one case not the full game!! The full game is fantastic you won’t regret it - but I bought both of them I can’t believe it. Waste of money! But 1 game on Nintendo is like $90 anyway so I guess I’m still saving money

### 1/5 — Dégouté

*2020-04-21*

### 1/5 — So disappointed.

*2020-04-12*

I had been waiting to write a review of this one! I bought the whole game episode-by-episode. Let’s do it thematically so you can see the most important topics to you.

TLDR: story and characters were incredibly flat, with absolutely REAMS of dialogue. There is no substantial plot advancement and the character development is superficial and lazy. But the animation is beautiful.

Value (3/5) - with such a review you’d think I’d put the value lower, especially as I bought it piecemeal for about £17. But you see all of the gorgeous animation, music and voice acting deserves that price tag. It’s a shame that it was wasted on this game though.

Dialogue (1/5) - let’s not even go there. I like games with a lot of dialogue, but this one??? Unbelievable. You could take half of it out easily.

Story (1/5). - I became a fan of the franchise many moons ago due to its twists and turns in the story. However, there is no real overarching storyline until the final episode, meaning we don’t bond with characters and aren’t emotionally invested in them enough for the “twists” to mean anything. Moreover - as there are only limited characters and time in each story, the answer to the mystery is GLARINGLY obvious from the beginning in every single case bar the final one.

Characters (2/5). - firstly, the designs and the punny names are superb. However, it is the protagonist and crew who bring it down. I was so excited to have a young female protagonist, and Sherl and Ernest seemed promising too. Her whole schtick is that she is oblivious to Ernest’s feelings for her, which was funny and endearing at first. But then Katrielle seems sort of... mean? She treats Ernest like a servant to the point where it’s... uncomfortable. It’s not just that she’s treating him as a friend and it’s unrequited which is sweet, she shows him little respect at all. She seems to do things out of convenience and self satisfaction rather than care as the professor did. Her cocky attitude makes her hard to empathise with. As previously mentioned, the episodic structure makes it hard for there to be any character development.

Puzzles (4/5). - it may just be my age, but these feel somewhat.. easier than the DS titles. Still, there are no better iOS puzzles that do it better, and the daily puzzles are great!

Animation, music and voice acting (6/5). - the only reason I couldn’t bring myself to rate it 1* is because of the animation. It is absolutely beautiful, with generously long and frequent fully-animated and voiced scenes in every episode. Beautiful.

Misc (2/5): the trunk games make their return, but all of them feel very flat and uninteresting compared to previous games. Feng shui feature is cute.

### 1/5 — Level 5: please stop with this nonsense

*2019-10-21*

1) the soul of the game is lost. What made this franchise successful was sticking to its guns and building its own identity with absolutely no regard for what happened to be in vogue at the time. Where are the characters we loved? What has happened to the quirky anachronism? Save us from this painful third rate, unplayable tribute act.
2) In-app purchases even AFTER PAYING £16? You have got to be joking. Freemium is NOT the way to win this audience over. There's a reason why "pay-once-and-play" is becoming more popular.

Time to have a serious talk with yourselves Level 5

### 1/5 — Dämlich

*2019-08-30*

### 1/5 — Dialogue

*2018-07-20*

Will be deleting this game as far too much dialogue. I’m about ten minutes into the game and have only played one game. I used to play Professor Layton on my DS, what happened?? This is so boring. So pleased I didn’t purchase it!

### 1/5 — Langweilig und zu leicht

*2018-04-01*

Je conseil fortement !

### 5/5 — Best. Game. Ever!

*2020-08-01*

I only downloaded this game to write a review; to give positive feedback to Level 5 etc. I have this game on my game console and the only downside is that I finished the game in two months. The game leaves on a cliffhanger and I was wondering when the next instalment will come out as I love this game! Definitely worth the money!

### 5/5 — Just as incredible as I remember!

*2019-08-10*

These games used to be my favourite, and I really love that they kept the old Nintendo design! The voice acting is so fun to listen to, and the puzzles!! I was worried that the games would’ve changed for the new audiences, but I played the first game, couldn’t for the life of me figure out how those shapes make that shape, then I got the twist!! I was indescribably happy to know that this game was just as wonderfully baffling as the originals! Keep up the good work!

### 5/5 — Great addition to the Layton titles

*2018-10-06*

I love this game, & I adore Katrielle. I really hope Level 5 will branch this story out into further games.

### 5/5 — Amazing

*2018-10-01*

Have played most of the Layton games and spent my money on this one. I absolutely love this game and think it’s really improving my puzzle solving skills

### 5/5 — Fantastisch

*2018-08-04*

*2018-06-24*

Mais reste, il faut payer

### 5/5 — Zuerst lesen, dann das Spiel laden!

*2018-06-24*

An alle Hater hier ;)

Dieses Spiel ist ab 4+. Der Schwierigkeitsgrad also dementsprechend angepasst.

### 5/5 — Superb game but please be cheaper

*2018-02-27*

Before I say anything, let me first say that I hope the developers are generous enough to give a discount to their full kit because $25 is a little expensive(even though the game look like it is worth that price). I just finished the first case and it was magnificent. Everything from the character, art, animation to the puzzles was perfect. I like the fact that we get to explore old cases to complete the optional cases and find all the hint coins. The case scores will bring out the competitiveness inside every player as you only have one chance to get full marks(otherwise it's replaying a brand new game). Unlike some who complained about the dialogue, I actually enjoyed them because it reduces burnout and boredom. You can tell the developers really put a lot of effort into the game and it felt like I was playing Professor Layton on Nintendo. Please be mindful that this game drain battery fast so a power bank is necessary. Overall, job well done. It is games like this that separates 'Level 5' from the other developers.

### 4/5 — Great game

*2023-05-19*

I’m glad to finally have a chance to play this game without having to buy a 3DS fans of the series will enjoy this. Great story and fun puzzles give a go there is a free demo
