## What is Learn Japanese?

Learn core Japanese vocabulary by ear. Hear 2,000 words in frequency order, most common first, and recall what each one means. Spaced repetition brings each word back when it is due.

Start with 500 words free, with every study feature included. A single purchase adds the other 1,500 words. There is no subscription.

Pictures where they show the meaning
About a third of the words have a picture, such as 犬 (dog) and 駅 (station). Words such as 理由 (reason) and 全部 (all) have no picture a learner could read without already knowing the word, so you practice them with kana, meaning and audio.

Listen, then recall
Hear each word in Japanese and study its kana, kanji and English meaning. For words you have studied, a pause before the answer gives you time to recall it. Tap to reveal sooner, or turn the pause off in Settings. Play any list from the Library hands-free, in rank order or shuffled, at the speech speed you choose, and mark each word as remembered or missed as it plays.

A daily round that follows your progress
Today shows your next round: the reviews that are due, then new words, 7 a day unless you change the number in Settings. You meet each new word before it is asked, and a missed word returns a few questions later. Reviews spread further apart as you answer correctly, and a missed review brings the word back the next day. You can also add any word from the Library to today's round.

Questions change as a word becomes familiar. Choose the meaning of a word written in kana, pick the Japanese word for an English meaning, or match a word you hear to its picture. Free practice gives you another round and leaves your review schedule as it is.

Read at your own pace
Choose kana or kanji first, and show or hide romaji, which fades as a word gets stronger. Search the Library in Japanese or English, filter it to due, studying or learned words, and follow your progress with a ring beside each word. An optional daily reminder brings you back with one word, and its picture when it has one.

Offline study
Study offline once a Japanese voice is installed. Audio uses the Japanese text-to-speech voices built into iOS. First-run setup helps you choose a voice or download a clearer enhanced voice over Wi-Fi. Your study progress stays on your iPhone. An account is not required, and we collect no personal data.

Sources
The vocabulary draws on the third-party Tanos N5, N4 and N3 study lists, with English meanings adapted from JMdict/EDICT. Frequency information comes from wordfreq and Tatoeba. Credits and licence links are in Settings > Sources.
