### 4/5 — After 3 years of usage, it disappoints.

*2026-08-12, version 2.6*

The main issues with this app that I have noticed after using it for 3 years are the following two things: 1. Spelling errors. English and Japanese spelling errors occur in JLPT vocabulary flashcards as well as the Essentials lesson flashcards. I would say that about 1 in 75 flashcards have an error. These have all existed for years and are still here which is very disappointing. For people who don’t know better, these dozens of errors may become ingrained into their knowledge and could take them a long time to weed out. 2. Discrepancies in definitions between flashcards/lack of consolidation. This issue is everywhere in the vocab flashcards. For example(and i could give 100+ examples), if you type the present tense conjugation of the japanese verb 出す(dasu), 出します(dashimasu), into the search bar, 4 individual flashcards will pop up for that verb, but all 4 have different definitions which are: 1. Send. 2. Take out/withdraw. 3. Hand in. 4. Run. If you get a japanese to english question for one of these flashcards, you wont know which of the 4 english definitions to type, so you get the question wrong unless you are lucky or you already know all 4 definitions. This needs to be simplified or streamlined or consolidated in some way, or else it makes learning a lot harder.

Other than these two significant issues that hold it back a lot, the app is great.

### 3/5 — Please add a select option

*2026-08-07, version 2.6*

The app is very good overall but it’s very tiring and long to select one by one each word or kanji that I want to study to put them in a list. Please add a select option to make everyone’s study easier. It’s probably easy for you to do and it’s going to improve the app a lot.

Thank you

### 3/5 — Great, but select multiple kanji?

*2026-07-17, version 2.6*

The app is great. You can study vocab and kanji but getting started is kinda confusing, and I wish there’s a feature of selecting multiple kanji to add them to my list. If there is it’s not easy to find.

### 4/5 — Decent app

*2026-07-16, version 2.6*

So far it’s easy to use, tracking, quizzes are a nice touch. Only one issue not all words are labeled as polite or non. Example: anta (non polite) vs anata (polite) don’t want to come off as rude.

### 4/5 — AMAZING APP. However…

*2026-07-07, version 2.5.7*

This app is GREAT for learning Japanese, and it has helped me improve a lot faster since I have experience learning Japanese before. I am VERY passionate about learning languages and PLEASEEEEEE when I say this Put a setting to where if we enter a vocab word into a list it would let us learn to write the word as a whole. Custom flashcards would also be amazing too.

### 4/5 — Idioma…

*2026-07-04*

Deveria ter o idioma português, assim poderia considerar comprá-lo

### 4/5 — Pro Mode

*2026-07-02, version 2.5.7*

I love this app so much and I use it almost every day to get better at Kanji and it is good with that, however the only reason why I’m giving it a 4/5 is because of the Limit for things like questions. If the limit was gone this app would be so much better at least for me.

### 2/5 — ai slop

*2026-06-24, version 2.5.7*

i haven’t found anything better yet but i’m def looking. There’s so much unnecessary bloat of ai ‘features’ that drive the price stupid high. And now there’s a timer for how many of the non-ai quizzes you can do?

### 4/5 — NEED SYNC DATA OPTION

*2026-06-10, version 2.5.7*

i’d give 5 stars but for the longest the app has said a sync feature is coming but has not. i’m constantly switching between my ipad at home and my personal phone during my breaks at work and want to make sure all my progress is saved under one account. please add a sync option

### 4/5 — Dictionary form

*2026-06-01, version 2.5.7*

Good but really needs to put the words in dictionary form.

### 4/5 — Intéressant

*2026-05-31*

Manque possibilité de cacher les romaji

### 5/5 — Fun and intuitive

*2026-05-30, version 2.5.7*

Very fun and intuitive app, you can move as fast or slow as you want and select different concepts that you need for your lesson! Nice app :D

### 4/5 — Super app avec un seul vrai défaut

*2026-05-27*

### 5/5 — Works great!

*2026-05-19, version 2.5.6*

Works great!

### 5/5 — Goated

*2026-05-19, version 2.5.6*

This is very good for learning the japanese alphabet

### 5/5 — Great

*2026-05-16, version 2.5.6*

I have a trip and I’m really tryna expand off my vocab and kanji thanks!

### 2/5 — Thanks

*2026-05-12*

Nothing

### 4/5 — Bien mais pas francisé complètement

*2026-05-11*

Le mélange anglais/français est très perturbant !

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — It costs $200

*2026-07-11, version 2.6*

It costs…$200…

### 1/5 — Not for me

*2026-05-14, version 2.5.6*

Confusing, clunky interface that was inadequately explained. The wording in the app was confusing. I grew frustrated enough after just a few minutes that I uninstalled it. Finally, I’m not a fan of the idea that I would be charged $9.99 if I did not cancel after seven days—making money if the customer forgets to cancel really rubs me the wrong way.

### 1/5 — Where is cross device sync?

*2026-04-18*

The sync feature has been “coming soon” for multiple years at this point…

### 1/5 — Pure confusion

*2026-03-18, version 2.5.6*

I been thrown into a quiz without a lesson. There is no way to understand anything. I am very interested in learning some basic words or even phrases. This App is pure confusion. I cancel my free trial right now.

### 1/5 — Full of errors

*2025-11-22, version 2.5*

I start using the app in the same time I started studying Nhk world Japan official Japanese course. I discovered that the app it’s full of errors in phonetics indications causing trouble understanding the meaning. Not happy.

### 1/5 — Crashes very often

*2025-11-16*

I really like this app. So much in fact, that I bought the pro version (for the first time ever, for any app). What really annoys me though, that it really crashes very often when learning kanji through the quiz module. I practice kanji that I got wrong in the „draw practice“ part of the quiz, and every second kanji or so the app crashes and I have to start over… More feedback: I’d love to be able to sync my progress between devices. At home I practice on my iPad, but when I’m not at home I use my phone. It’d be great if I could sync my progress between devices. Otherwise I’m really happy, the constant crashing really dampens the mood though.

Update June 24:
It still crashes very often. There have been no improvements to the app and the publisher is doing nothing to fix this frustratingly annoying issue. I regret paying for the yearly plan.

Update December 24:
Still no fix for this issue sadly.

**Developer response:** Hi, please contact me so I investigate the issue: app.development.rp@gmail.com thanks for the feedback

### 1/5 — sooo…. are we ever going to be able to sync across devices?

*2025-11-16, version 2.5*

paying a lot of money, and yet still nowhere to be seen

### 1/5 — Terrible performance

*2025-11-03, version 2.5*

App is great, but sometimes its performance is terrible. And liquid glass design has only made things worse. From now phone also gets very hot. And that's on iPhone 16 Pro, hard to imagine what's happening on previous models. I hope this will be fixed soon.

### 1/5 — Don’t buy

*2025-09-28, version 2.5*

Wow - I paid for the this app. Then the access I previously had was taken away and it became made pretty much unusable without a subscription. I already paid!!

### 1/5 — Why change the model

*2025-09-24, version 2.5*

Recently they added paywalls very disappointed in their mistakes

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Peak

*2026-08-09*

I like it

### 5/5 — Great App

*2026-08-03, version 2.6*

Great for learning kanji, only problem with the app is that you can’t mass add kanji to a list, you have to go and individually select

### 5/5 — Great app

*2026-07-17, version 2.6*

I use this for my intensive Japanese class and it works great for the Kanji. I use the KANA app originally but when we moved to kanji I used this. Paying for the subscription or lifetime access is worth idc you plan on practicing a lot or using it for a class but just for every once in an awhile use the basic stuff is fine. Thank you for making this app. I’d say the only downside which may be my devices is the app tends to crash every once in awhile but not a big deal.

### 5/5 — Very useful

*2026-07-08, version 2.6*

Use every day, highly useful guide

### 5/5 — vocabulary writing 🙏🏻

*2026-07-06, version 2.5.7*

I really love this app, it’s useful and interesting for me. But I’d like to writing vocabulary as well. I hope that this option will be in next update

### 5/5 — Amazing app!!✨

*2026-07-01, version 2.5.7*

I think Benkyō is an amazing app because of how easy it is to learn the alphabets and kanji. Within the first day, I had already known 20 different hiragana characters. The app is fun to use and the quizzes help everything stick. This is one of the best apps for learning Japanese and I recommend it to beginners like me!

### 5/5 — Yes

*2026-07-01*

U need this

### 5/5 — One of the best

*2026-06-26, version 2.5.7*

I’ve tried many apps and this stands only equal to Anki. There is a paid version with extra features if you want, but I’ve used the free version for over a year and it doesn’t drive you crazy unlike other “free” apps.

You can learn reading and writing of kanji and vocab, and even includes the Chinese and Korean readings of most kanji! Would highly recommend to those who are looking to study Japanese long term.

### 5/5 — Dictionary

*2026-06-10, version 2.5.7*

Good to use when needing to write kanji and good for definitions

### 5/5 — It was perfect

*2026-06-10, version 2.5.7*

I m Persian and this program help me so much
