On the first day I felt the difference in my learning. This is the future of learning. Get on the bandwagon before it's to late. There Is so much content. It is probably more indispensable as your level of understanding grows. I continue to find more ways to use this app. I use in conjunction with many other apps and learning programs: duolingo (day 380), Pimsleur, Michel Thomas, language learning, butterfly Spanish and more... If you are a serious learner and want the best resource this is definitely a must have. It is worth the investment...one of my favorite finds in this app is the listening practice, it allows you to hear the language and to practice listening and to progress. Brainscape Spanish is a valuable part of my Spanish learning library. I've had it on my IPad for a few years now, and every time I go back to it I am excited with how good it is. The science behind the learning works. It's a great app to reinforce what you already know or to advance your Spanish level. Probably the most important aspect is that reinforces your knowledge of Spanish so that you can have a conversation with a native Spanish speaker with more ease and confidence. This is the area in which other apps such as Rosetta Stone fall short. What is the point of having an Advanced knowledge of the Spanish language if you can only speak it like a child. Bravo! It really is a full Spanish course. I have done Rosetta Stone and Duolingo. I like them both and they can take you from beginner to intermediate student. But this set of Spanish flash cards is taking me from intermediate to advanced. The cards have a quality recording of the Spanish so I can practice pronunciation. My Spanish tutors compliment my accent and the breadth of my vocabulary. This app is worth what I paid for it. I recommend it to every English speaker who is serious about learning Spanish. ### 5/5 — Your way to fluency *2016-01-27, version 2.20151011* These flash cards contain all of the Spanish language.... If you go from the beginning, you are taught grammar, sentence structure, plus there is vocabulary (with sentence examples) and verbs. I rave about this app to everyone I meet. Face it, learning a language requires a lot of memorization, a lot of repeated exposure to words and sentences. Brainscape does it in a way that's ordered and not overwhelming, and you end up learning much more than you realize. Great for self-study for a beginner, intermediate or advanced student (I went through all 3 phases...). I've spent a lot of money on Spanish lessons and buying the app was by far the best. It really does contain 4 years of Spanish. At this point, I am conversational, I can read a book in Spanish, and I'm less than halfway through the app. Needless to say, I am way wag ahead of anyone using Duolingo! You need to give this a shot. ### 5/5 — Excelente! *2015-07-19, version 2.20141125* I studied and used Spanish more than 25 years ago. Most of it has been lost through lack of use. I now live in an area with lots of Spanish speaking people and I wanted to bring back and improve my language skills. This app has been very good. When new concepts are introduced it explains them very well. I personally like to listen to the Spanish spoken, look away from the iPad, and work on my listening skills. For concepts I don't understand I will look at the screen and study, think about them. It is put together very well. My only suggestion is that for someone who had no experience with the language whatsoever would benefit the most if the also had a book on hand to look things up,particularly verb forms. The translations are questionable and if you are trying to learn Spanish the flashcard format just does not work for lessons. But there's more: even though the app costs more than it should, they still put ads for their other app in the middle of the screen. However, the card rotation algorithm is quite bad. If your lowest ranked category has few items they will be thrown at you over and over again. This means you have to work around the software which is sad. It really needs a spaced repetition implementation to make it better. Additionally, certain cards are missing audio or contain mistakes. The support staff is inconsistent in responding to the suggested edits and the ones they acknowledge do not show up corrected, well ever! They have answered some of my questions to be fair. All criticism aside I still use the app and find it helpful but I really wish the maker would get these annoyances worked out. For the price though, I expect it to be a little more versatile. 1. Allow the user to toggle the flash cards to Spanish words, phrases, or verbs and require the user to answer in English. Currently it’s one-direction on (English to Spanish). As an ESL teacher, I have see reverse-order learning work extremely well in terms of improving language retention. 2. The flash cards should be edit-enabled to allow student to enter text to support a particular card (for eg other sentences using the word/verb, or learning notes). Currently to accomplish this I have to screenshot a card then use Apple photo editor to add texts. 3. Add audio to all sentence examples used on noun and verb flash cards. 4. Intégrate with SpanishDict! (for a higher subscription cost to cover licensing, dev, and margin) - 75% of the Brainscape users I know (n=~15) are constantly toggling back and forth between these two apps during study sessions. 5. Better metrics - allow user/teacher to track “study days/cards per month” in addition to daily streak. Again - this is a very good app that could become an exceptional app with these functionality additions. ### 4/5 — Nice pace *2016-11-24, version 2.20160809* I should have realized that this flashcard-based method wouldn't include any typing/writing, but I think it would be helpful in learning. I use the app with a notebook next to me to write things down as I learn them. I can also use my notes to "study" from before I start a new session. It's best for me to do all three things - see, hear, and do (i.e. write) - in order to learn them, even in English! Otherwise I'm just repeating from short term memory. ### 4/5 — Great flash card system *2012-01-18, version 2.20111010* This app is a flash card system that uses a rating system to improve the order of the cards. The idea being that if you see a word to little you are forced to relearn it each time, but if you see it too often after you learn the word you are wasting your time. Seems to work as stated, and it has integrated website for computer based study. Despite the gaps, I always manage to remember what I learned previously. It just goes to show how well BrainScapes’ cognitive science works. I’ve been using this App more often recently, and I currently have a 20 day streak, and I can tell that I am actually absorbing the new vocabulary and concepts. If there is one critique that I have, it’s that the voices can been a bit “robotic” or “corny” at times. If a native speaker hears the voice examples, the usually laugh. If the voice examples were a bit more natural, this app would literally be perfection. This program is put together in a way that makes learning fun and rewarding. ### 5/5 — Extremely Comprehensive *2017-11-22, version 3.20171001* I've been using this app for about a year and a half, and it really works. My Spanish vocabulary is much better now than it was after four years of high school Spanish. My method is to study one or two decks per day. I go through each deck until I'm able to rate each card with a 5. Then the next day I go through decks from the previous day to make sure I remember everything. After finishing all of the decks (the vocabulary at least) I go back to the beginning and start again to review. The advantages this app has over Duolingo which everybody mentions as a go-to Spanish study app are: 1. It has much more content. 2. You can learn a lot faster because you can flip through the cards very quickly (as opposed to stopping to do various typing exercises). 3. You go at your own pace because you decide for yourself how well you know each card. This is a little disconcerting at first, but eventually you'll find a method for most quickly deciding when to rate a card as a 5. For instance, I'll often rate a card that I don't know as a 1, and then increment the rating every time I get it right. 4. The direction of the cards is always from English to Spanish. That is, the card gives you the English version and you have to come up with the Spanish. This is the right way to go for improving your ability to speak. It seems to work fine for reading Spanish as well. If you want to do some Spanish reading comprehension, you can try reading the example sentences on the cards. 5. The audio pronunciations are helpful, but if you want to go really fast through the decks you can just mute the sound on your phone so you're not always hearing cut-off pronunciations. I suppose that's more of a tip than an advantage over Duolingo. Once again, the true advantage of these cards is that you can learn really quickly because you're skipping (i.e. quickly rating a card as a 5) when you already know something. ### 5/5 — Incredible learning tool *2017-09-29, version 2.20160809* This needs to be updated for iPhone 8.
