### 4/5 — Potentially great…

*2026-05-24*

I really like this app! Visually, it’s extremely appealing. The UI is unique and intuitive. But, there is room for improvement... Importing transactions requires a bit of a learning curve, though, once you get the hang of it, it’s extremely functional. Fortunately, the process is ever-improving, due to the developer’s responsiveness and hard work.
Clearly, this app is destined for greatness. Grab it!

**Developer response:** I appreciated the feedback, and I am glad there is interest in transaction import. I have been experimenting with some improvements to the feature based on my own usage patterns, and always appreciate the input.

### 4/5 — W

*2016-10-26, version 3.0.2*

Initially great. Year later crashes a lot. Have to key transactions in phases

### 3/5 — I Like, but Need Update

*2016-06-24, version 3.0.2*

I like the app, but it really needs an update.

### 4/5 — Cat

*2012-05-25*

So glad I found this! An excellent double entry mini-system and a very reasonable priced app. To use this app effectively the user would need to have a basic knowledge of debits/credits so if you're used to another expense/budget app, best to stick with what you know.

In short this one was exactly what I wanted. Excellent reporting capabilities, easy to set up your accounts and easy to enter and keep track of transactions.

The only reason I didn't give it the 5th star was the visual appearance(hey, I like colour :) ).

Happy Bookkeeping/Accounting.

### 4/5 — Nice app very helpful

*2011-08-09*

This is a good app to help you budget your expenses. A basic understand of credits and debits is needed to be able to use this app in my opinion. You don't need to be an accountant but it would help you to know that: Assets accounts have a debt normal balance, which means you debit it to add to it or in the case of this app(use the plus black icon). Also expenses have a normal debit balance. Liabilities and revenue have a credit normal balance, which means you add to that account by crediting it or in the case of this app( use the red minus icon). To take away from any account just apply it's opposite normal balance. For example to reduce an asset account which have a normal debit balance you must credit it. I hope this info helps you in using this app. It is well worth the $3.99 I paid for it;).

P.S speaking from an accounting stand point. (Revenues are suppose to have a credit balance), but in this app it seems to have it setup as a debit account in order to add to it.

Sincerely,

Accountant in the making.

### 4/5 — Real accounting at last

*2010-04-22*

I went through all of the expense/accounting apps on the store and found only this to provide double-entry bookkeeping, and that feature really is a killer advantage for anyone serious about tracking, understanding and managing their income and expenditure but wanting to do it easily.

Not everyone is familiar with the concept of course, but this app makes it remarkably easy to handle so its audience and accessibility should be far wider than just those with a little experience or knowledge of the field. The support web site helps out there too.

There are some features I would like to see but I am sure improvement will happen and there is a Feature Request section on the support site which is already active. Password protection, mentioned by a previous reviewer, is already done for example. The core, which is a working personal accounting system costing peanuts and right there on your iPhone, is wonderful.

Five stars for the concept and implementation to date. It will be improved but that is not a reason to withhold the last star.

### 5/5 — Perfect for Bean Counters

*2009-12-13*

I count beans, and I'm not ashamed of it. I've tried apps like Cha-Ching, and they are beautiful, but single-entry accounting is for chumps. Then, I came upon the Ledger: the first and only beautiful, usable and functional double-entry accounting app for iPhone. Ledger is more than worth the $3.99 I paid for it!

Also, the icon is worthy of its place in my iPod touch next to the likes of TouchPad, ConvertBot and Tweetie 2. Thank you for making an application that is beautiful enough to sit on my first page of apps.

### 4/5 — Great system, only the necessary features

*2009-09-15*

Double entry means that you can keep track of more complicated situations with a less complicated interface than other apps.

This app seems on track to become the perfect iPhone accounting solution but is only almost there; it is missing some features I would like (particularly reconciling accounts) and the number of taps to do something isn't streamlined everywhere (in order to get from the history of an account to add an entry you need to back out of one thing and go into another.)

### 5/5 — Excellent app to track personal finances (Review of version 1.0.1)

*2009-09-04*

I have checked every single personal finance app (free and paid) in the AppStore as of today and finally bought this one.

There is a 5-10 minute learning curve to understand how multiple entry works. (unless you are an accounting major). I found a video on the developer's website which helped me understand this.

Having said that, this is a very functional application without all the 'bling' that you see with other personal finance apps (read: pennies, accountr and other $10+ apps and free apps). The shiny stuff wears out quickly and once you start using it everyday, its simplicity that matters. And it is in simplicity that this app excels.

Entering expenses is a snap. You quickly open the app, enter your transactions and close it. And forget it. I can't explain how good this app is without showing it.

Having said that, I would also like to add that you can't do analysis using this app (as of version 1.0.1). This app allows you to e-mail all transactions in CSV format though and later import them into Excel on a PC/Mac.

I would also like to see some sort of filtering transactions by 'current month' etc.

On the whole, a very useful app and I highly recommend it.

### 4/5 — Not Bad

*2009-07-30, version 0*

Its a good app but when i updated i lost alot of information about the transactions, other than that i would recommend it. It works as it should

### 5/5 — Great, but can be more streamlined!

*2009-07-13*

Ledger is a great app that stays true to the accounting (A = L+E) equation, and in that sense it does its job. The application, though, needs to become more user friendly and streamlined (its main menu is awfully blocky, it would be helpful if they were collapsable), and two or three screens to enter one transaction is abit much. Though Ledger hopefully will continue to improve, and i'll be here using it still =)

### 5/5 — Excellent App

*2009-07-06, version 0*

This application is well-suited for those who like to (or better- need to) tightly manage their money. It is very convenient since mostly everone has access to their phone/iTouch at the time of a transaction. However, in order to make the best of this app, one should definitely have a rudimentary understanding of accounting.

My only suggestion for improvement is to have an option for which the app automatically calculate totals for each account type, i.e. Total Assets = $x. This would be very convenient, and I hope it is in an upcoming update. In addition, integrating a budget type function with this app would make it the best buy in the app market.

### 2/5 — Help!!!!

*2009-06-30*

I have been eagerly waiting for the update on this app so I can get my accounts back up to date, but this new version (2.0) won't even open. I get a blank sheet and then it just returns to the homepage. Please fix, as I do all my account keeping with this app, and have found it to be great up until now.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Ugh. Apparently an update wiped out all my accounts

*2026-03-31, version 4.0.1*

I used this app to track expenses, but haven’t used it for 3 months. When I opened it today everything was gone. Apparently it’s been updated wiping everything clean. Thanks so much for that. The new functions are way too fancy for what I need. Now looking for a new app.

### 1/5 — Unimpressive to say the least...

*2011-11-16, version 2.1*

Even for $0.99, but for $3.99??? Stay away until reviews reveal that this product gets some attention from the developers. It needs significant improvements in both features and functionality.

### 1/5 — Good start but...

*2010-01-02, version 0*

I've been looking for a double entry ledger for a while and found this one. It has the basic functionality of bookkeeping, but lacks any kind of reporting which is absolutely necessary. The app is half baked and feature incomplete. I want my money back.

### 1/5 — Totally Useless Update

*2009-06-30, version 0*

Thanks for the no instruction on the new update! The app does not work! Cant not open it! Deleted the app then reinstall, it works But I have no more data. I did the restore feature. It started to crash again. And because I didn't know I need to create a latest backup. The restore is useless. I have LOST everything!!!!!!!!!

### 1/5 — Crashes

*2009-06-19, version 0*

I have tried using this and it crashes everytime.

### 1/5 — App does not run

*2009-01-06, version 0*

Bought it twice and it doesnt run. It crashes as soon as I open it...

### 1/5 — Missed the mark

*2008-09-01*

Not user friendly and tracking method is repetitive. Someone looking for quick intuitive app needs to look elsewhere.

### 2/5 — Crash of the Titans

*2016-10-27, version 3.0.2*

Please update the app, it has been crashing since iOS 10.

### 2/5 — Ledger

*2009-10-12*

Zero reporting capability, e.g. monthly reports, makes this a pretty useless package. Add some reporting capability in an update, and this could be a good package for accounting geeks.

### 2/5 — I loved this app

*2009-09-30, version 0*

This is the only double entry accounting app in the app store, I really love it. However, no update for few months and the promised features are still missing. There are bugs without fix as well. I hope it will get updated soon.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Great App!!!

*2015-10-08, version 3.0.2*

I love this app and use it daily, probably more than any other app.
Still getting used to the new format and entry method but love the improvements. Customer service and help is excellent!

### 5/5 — Great tool

*2014-11-14, version 3.0.2*

Fantastic app for those verses in basic bookkeeping. Use it daily and find it an invaluable tool, though I'm hoping for a "search" feature.

### 5/5 — I use it every day.

*2014-04-28*

This app is simple, a perfect and easy way to keep track of your finances. Best ledger app without a doubt.

The current version however will not let me send reports when I tap the button the app crashes. I have the latest iOS and I'm using a 4S.

Keep doing what you're doing guys.

### 5/5 — Simple and powerful

*2013-12-07, version 3.0.2*

I loved using ledger on the command line but found all the typing tedious. This app gives you all of that power in an easy to use app. With double entry you'll never miss a cent. Thanks!!

### 5/5 — Fantastic App!

*2012-05-03, version 3.0.1*

They have stellar customer service!!
Love the new changes! Plus the developer told me about some old things are being put back on and new stuff! I use this app daily!!! Love it!

### 5/5 — Murdamat

*2012-02-04*

### 5/5 — GREAT UPDATE!

*2010-10-16, version 0*

Works awesome!

### 5/5 — Great app/The Best

*2010-10-16*

Depois de quase dois anos usando diariamente, posso dizer que é o melhor aplicativo da App Store. Se você gosta/conhece contabilidade e quer ter controle total de todas as suas contas, esse é o applicativo certo.
After almost two years of diary use I can say that this is the best app of App Store. If you like/know accounting and want to control all your accounts with precision, this is the right app!

***

Ótimo aplicativo, dá um pouco de trabalho no começo mas depois se mostra muito útil. Requer algum conhecimento de contabilidade. Simples e bem eficiente, altamente recomendado.
It seems a bit difficult to getting used to CR-DR system at first, but if you like or want to learn accounting, this app is a nice deal, very simple, natural to use and powerful! A great buy...

### 5/5 — Pretty decent.

*2010-04-07*

Good for tracking my debts and savings. A bit lacking in the UI, but not every app can be like weightbot can it?

### 5/5 — Love it!

*2010-02-20*

I really like this basic ledger. Splits transactions well - let's you create accounts and offers very rudimentary reporting. I don't understand the little photos you can add. Can u expand them? It would be useful to snap pix of receipts but only if you could expand them to look at them. A great app - well worth the money
