I had the “Familia Romana” book for several years and started learning with it several times - but only now with Legentibus I was able to get through it (plus a number of other books). I’ve wanted to learn classical Latin for years. I maxxed out the Latin on Duolingo, which was fun, but it was too short to be of great use. I purchased a textbook and tried to learn that way, but it’s boring and difficult. After a long time of wanting to learn, but not, I found this website. If you want to learn Latin, use this. It’s not like those surface-level or non-user-friendly platforms. It’s professional, well-designed for learning, and most importantly: fun. I think it’s easy to prioritize the “best” way to learn something, but we are human, and an important factor in continuing to learn is enjoyment of the process. From the first page of reading you will feel like you can read the language. It’s a reading-immersion course including the Lingua Latina books anyone who took Latin in high school will probably remember, plus a host of other more exciting and gradually more difficult reads to build vocabulary as you go—classics, of course, but entirely new children and YA books as well. It’s beautifully done, prepared entirely by Latin teachers and scholars, great narration, no AI. I wish there were nature method apps like this for every target language. Continue your stellar work. ### 2/5 — Strong idea, but held back by poor dictionaries and no LLM translation/grammar support *2025-12-29, version 2.8* Legentibus is a thoughtfully designed app and I use it regularly for reading and listening to Latin texts, especially LLPSI. The audio-focused approach works well, and for supported material the experience is generally very good. Where the app falls down is in two areas that matter a lot if you’re trying to learn Latin properly rather than just skim texts. The built-in dictionaries are a major weakness. They’re not particularly strong to begin with, and more importantly they don’t reliably show vowel quantities. For an app that emphasises pronunciation and listening, this really undermines its core purpose. The dictionary choices feel driven by licensing rather than quality. Integrating something like Wiktionary would be a big step forward, as it’s free and far more useful for Latin, including vowel length, parts of speech and inflections. The other issue is how hard it is to work with the text outside the app. For passages without translations or grammatical notes, many learners now use tools like ChatGPT for deeper analysis. At the moment this is awkward and involves screenshots and extra steps. Basic text selection and copying, or sharing passages via the system share sheet, would make the app much more practical for serious study. Overall, Legentibus has real strengths, but these gaps limit its value for committed learners. Fixing them would significantly improve the app and justify a 5-star rating. ### 5/5 — THANK YOU SM *2025-12-12* As someone who has to take Latin for a minimum of 3 years in school (currently in my second year), I literally cannot express how much this app just changed my life. Okay that’s a little dramatic, but it definitely helped relieve some of the stress over my Latin exam next week. The best part about this app is the fact that it provides really good options for FREE!!! I’m sure it would probably be better if you paid for it, but this beats Duolingo any day. Have never had any formal classes. I started by doing the latin course on duolingo , which did help internalize the cases in a natural way for a complete beginner. Then I started Legentibus and have loved progressing with it ever since. My goal is to be able to read latin, so reading is the best way to learn for me. If I ever have any questions or doubts about a passage, I just screenshot it and share it with my tutor, ChatGPT, and it breaks it down further. You’d be better off just following the courses in those textbooks directly rather than this mix and matched mess. It’s not actually an app for learning Latin. It is a bunch of Latin books that you can have read to you. There are no lesson plans or instruction available in this app. ### 1/5 — Just a way to charge $99 for free material *2024-09-05, version 2.0* Everything this app offers is free elsewhere. They want $99 PER YEAR to access Lingva Latina. Everything this offers: dictionary, background play, books, etc. is all free online, and tbh it’s pretty sketchy they’re charging so much to access Lingva Latina. You don’t even realize what material is locked until getting through the 4 page (what appears to be AI generated introduction). I have to assume some of the stories were created with the same method. I’m so tired of apps like this being labeled “free (with in app purchases)”. ### 1/5 — Misleading *2024-05-30* I decided to look at this program for the free 3 day trial. I immediately realized it had almost nothing for students of ecclesiastical Latin. Within 20 minutes. I tried to cancel. I evoidently erroneously signed for the shortest subscription as it appeared that was the only way to look at the program. I was charged $9.99 and I don’t know how since I don’t use Apple Pay. Somehow they accessed my credit card info. Time to get a new card I guess. I complained and have still been charged for a month for something I only looked at for 20 minutes. Be careful of the limited offers on the App Store. Started by buying LLPSI - forward progress, but needed additional material. Then I found Legentibus. Wow. First, the app is really nicely designed and easy to navigate (some room for improvement). Second, and probably more important, actually learning Latin has been really fun and my learning has improved much since starting to use this. In contrast to what other reviews say, the additional readings are invaluable in slowly building up a solid foundation.
