It doesn’t specify where form it just says Apple but they all came through at the same time 12:55-12:57 a.m. I’m not sure how to reach the merchant about this issue, but other than that, helpful app so far! ### 4/5 — Great app for teaching *2020-07-27* Love this app for the visuals. Very clean layout. Easy to adjust settings. Great visualization of effect on DoF of various focal lengths and apertures. Many settings to adjust to how much information you want to see. I bought this app a few weeks ago and it's the best dof/hyperfocal tool I've ever seen. I use it on a daily basis and my students absolutely love it. If you are a pro, amateur or just starting out, do yourself a favour and buy this amazingly helpful app. It rocks!!! Works like a dream even on the new iOS 7. I don't use it in the field much, but I do use it to plan out shots ahead of time. What impresses me more than the app itself is its developers. I was asked for feedback, suggested the sliders could use more precision controls, and boom, here it is on the next update (about a week later). Two thumbs up for these guys. Good visuals but very frustrating to use. ### 3/5 — Lens-Lab *2012-11-19, version 1.0* Not a bad concept. For now, three stars is generous, but with the enhancements below this can easily become a 4-5 star app. In order to make it a real tool for photographers, there are a few key features that must be added: 1. Limiting selection of sensor sizes to only three seriously reduces the usefulness of the app. The capability of entering ANY sensor size it vital. 2. There needs to be a "zoom" feature available to expand the graphic when DOF is very shallow. The app is useless for shallow DOFs, as the near and far lines are so close they overlap. 3. A Macro feature should be added showing the magnification ratio 4. This one is nice-to-have (but it would be REALLY NICE to have): depending on sensor size and resolution, sharpness and one could argue DOF are impacted by small apertures due to diffraction. It would be nice to show the impact of diffraction in addition to DOF and angle info. ### 4/5 — Excellent dof display *2012-08-09* The one thing missing to make this a complete lens exploration app is a measure of what horizontal and vertical ranges are covered at the focus length. Currently just shows vertical angle of view. Yes, I can do the trigonometry myself, but it would be killer to have that no displayed on the screen. ### 5/5 — Fantastic learning tool *2012-08-02, version 1.0* With the aid of this app, I finally understand how to calculate hyperfocal distance. Kudos to the developer! ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Does function at all. *2017-01-17* Every time I open the app it crashes the moment I touch my screen. It worked for a few settings then started to crash. Force quit the app yet it continued to crash. I restarted my phone (and to be honest, at that point I was done with this app) and it continued to crash a first tap. This app is less worthless as it cost me three bucks. Don't buy it. **Developer response:** Sorry about that, I discovered a problem with certain devices and have pushed out an update. I hope it fixes the problem for you. ### 1/5 — Not so good *2013-09-10* The math in this app is so off it's not funny The layout of the app is really good tho but when it comes to doing its job it's no good at all ### 1/5 — ? *2013-09-05, version 1.1* I am soo confused... It feels like I'm reading a different language. You can't use your own picture and it is soo complicated! Waste of money!! DO NOT BUY I WARN YOU!!!! ### 2/5 — Good but for inaccuracies *2018-04-09, version 1.3.2* Depth of field of a lens is determined by focal length, aperture and distance to subject. It is not however dependant upon sensor size. This app changes the depth of field when you select a different size sensor, which is incorrect. The only difference the sensor size has is to the field of view. Fix this please and this could be a great app. ### 2/5 — iPhone Sensor Sizes? *2013-09-07, version 1.1* Great if you have end-end camera. But useless otherwise. Need to add compact camera and Smartphone sensor sizes to offer complete range of education. ### 2/5 — Nice app, info page biased *2011-05-09* First off, nice app by the author. It provides solid information regarding depth of field. However, while reading through the information page I found myself annoyed by the misinformation the author provides regarding quality of Dale cameras based on their sensor size. While sensor size does have certain impacts on a DSLR, it does not specifically define the grade or quality of a DSLR. This is just my pet peeve, and if you ignore the authors bias in the info page, this is a good app. I'm keeping it on my iPad. ### 3/5 — Something wrong with the Vertical AoV *2014-02-10, version 1.1* Nice app! However there might be something wrong with the Vertical Angle of View. When I select the FF sensor frame and 50mm focal len, the output vertical angle of view is 27, which I think should be around 45. ### 3/5 — OK for cheap lens ??? *2013-09-04, version 1.1* Nice app but seams to fails to dup what a good lens can do (i.e. a 400mm lens that cat focus at 15' and have a 5" dof at f4) Good for basic learning. ### 3/5 — _ *2013-09-04, version 1.1* Okay so far ### 3/5 — Nice app, few minor issues *2013-09-01, version 1.1* Very nice app! Nice result display. The precision slider (see app description) is a great feature. Lots of options to configure it just the way you prefer to work. Couple issues: Not enough display precision in metres (e.g. 200mm, f2.8. 2.0m shows near/far 2.0/2.0, at 10m shows 9.9/10(no decimals)). Basically the info isn't very usable at small apertures. A bug… Moving sliders to same input values can give slightly different results each time - e.g. FX, 200mm, f2.8, 2m - use precision slider to change focus dist from 1 to 2.0m (moving slider from left to right) results in near/far of 1.9/2.0m, but move slider from 3 to same 2.0 (moving from right to left) results in near/far 2.0/2.1m. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Great app for learning *2023-02-09* Love the app, it’s been very instructional. Any hope for medium format sensor support in a future update? ### 5/5 — No More Guessing on Depth of Field! *2019-03-12* Wonderful app. I’ve used it now for several years and I love it. If you want to know FOR SURE what portion of your photo is going to be in focus, this is the best app to see how changes will affect your depth of field. One great discovery was that by going wider, you get more depth of field. Since many current cameras have high megapixel counts, cropping some of an image off of “the sides” is not an issue. Awesome! ### 5/5 — New improvements = a great app *2018-04-16* The new functionality that changes the granularity of your slider movement as you move vertically is very helpful, and mitigates a long-standing issue I had with this app. I just hope that this enhancement is easily discoverable for new users! **Developer response:** I've added accuracy to the sliders. If you move your finger vertically while sliding, you can be much more precise in your values. ### 5/5 — I've used this for years *2016-09-30* As a photographer and trainer, I'm often asked about lenses and how they work. Sometimes people get it, with just a few sentences. Sometimes it helps to show them instead. This is what I use to show them. Whenever I show the other trainers, they end up getting this too. I don't use it all the time, but when I do, I'm glad that I have it. ### 5/5 — Use this to plan shoots *2015-04-14* This app really helped me realize why I was missing focus so much on a Nikkor 135mm f/2, I hadn't realized that unlike the lenses I'm used to, the DoF at 135mm, and about 10 feet is razor thin unless I dial the lens up to f5.6 or f8. The app now looks great on apple's latest phones too. ### 5/5 — Fast and simple! *2014-04-29* I love this app. I use it for bokeh and macro photography constantly.
