## What is Lernkartei?

Lernkartei (German for a flashcard box) is a German dictionary with flashcard training, built for learners of German. Everything works offline: the dictionary lives on your phone, nothing is sent anywhere, and there is no account. The interface is in German, which is the point: you learn the language in the language. If you would rather start in English, switch it to English in the settings.

DICTIONARY

Over 160,000 entries with short English meanings, German definitions, examples, articles, plural and conjugation forms, and pronunciation. About 9,000 words have two example sentences written at their level. Search understands inflected forms ("ist" leads to "sein", "Häuser" to "Haus") and English ("house" finds "Haus").

CARDS THAT GET TO THE POINT

The back of a card shows what you actually want to know: "Haus" means "house", "gehen" means "go, walk". No long explanations, no rare senses in the way.

SIX WAYS TO PRACTISE

Flip the card and swipe right if you knew it, left if you did not. Pick the English meaning out of four, or type it. Type the German word for an English meaning, where a small slip does not count as wrong. Only hear the word and choose its meaning. Or find the word missing from an example sentence. Switch modes any time in the settings.

READY-MADE DECKS

Eight levels from A1.1 to B2.2: up to B1 with the words of the Goethe-Zertifikat word lists, in the order a course brings them, and for B2 the most common words of that level. Plus the 4000 most frequent words, topic decks (travel, food, work, family, home, health, weather, shopping, body, clothes, feelings, nature and more) and decks by part of speech: the most common verbs, adjectives, and nouns by gender. Every deck shows its first words before you add it. A word list from your course becomes a deck with one tap, and any deck can be shared as a list.

GRAMMAR

17 topics in 52 steps, from articles and plurals through verb forms, cases and adjective endings to relative clauses, the subjunctive and the passive. You practise with words at your level or with your own decks. After a wrong answer the rule is shown underneath, and a rules page explains everything again at your own pace.

READING, DICTATION AND SENTENCE BUILDING

80 short texts on everyday topics, ten per level, with a translation and questions on the text. Tap any word to look it up. In the dictation you hear a sentence and write it down; in sentence building you put an example sentence back together.

SPACED REPETITION

A proven scheduling method plans every card individually: what you know comes back less often, what you struggle with comes back sooner. You decide how many new words a day come in. A daily goal, a streak and statistics with a forecast, a calendar of your practice and your hardest words show where you stand.

BACKUP AND ANKI

A backup takes your decks and progress to a new phone. Existing Anki packages import with front and back, and your decks export as .apkg files.

LIGHT AND DARK

Follows the system setting, or stays fixed to light or dark.

Dictionary data comes from the German Wiktionary under CC BY-SA 4.0.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.11.0 — 2026-09-25

Grammar by level

The grammar section is new: 17 topics in 52 steps, from articles through the cases and adjective endings to the subjunctive and the passive. You practise with words at your level or, if you like, with your own decks. After a wrong answer the rule is shown underneath, and the start screen shows what to go over again. Choose your level in the settings under "Mein Niveau".

Reading and dictation

80 short texts on everyday topics, ten per level, each with a translation and three questions. Tap any word to look it up. In the dictation you hear a sentence and write it down.

Decks by real level

The level decks from A1.1 to B2.2 now follow the word lists courses teach from. If you already have one of them, you are offered the new words and decide yourself. The ready-made decks are arranged more clearly and show their first words before you add them.

Example sentences for your level

About 9,000 words have two example sentences written in the language of their level. They lead a word's page, fill the gap sentences and, if you like, appear on the back of the card.

Also new

- The word of the day is hand-picked: 245 words and idioms that show how German works, with their literal translation.
- The statistics show your vocabulary by level.
- Share a deck as a list, with someone from your course, say.
- A word's page shows the genitive and the comparison.
- Many dictionary entries are corrected, such as the meanings of "wie", "Bürger" and "bewerben" and the forms of "überlegen".

Your decks, your progress and your streak survive the update.

### 1.10.1 — 2026-09-24

The back button

The button at the top left answers reliably again. On iOS 26 and 27 it sometimes stopped responding, especially after saving; the app now draws it itself. Also, the idioms on a word's page sometimes showed without their English meaning. They always have it now.

Card details

The back of a card can now show the word's German definition, small under the English meaning, and an example sentence with its translation below it. Switch either on or off in the settings under "Kartendetails".

The app in English

If you would rather start with an English interface, switch it in the settings under "Sprache der App". Buttons, menus and hints are then in English; the words, definitions and examples stay German.

Idioms

A word's page now lists the idioms it is part of: for "Hand", "auf der Hand liegen" and "etwas in die Hand nehmen", each with its meaning.

More example sentences with a translation

38,223 more example sentences carry an English line underneath, among them the examples of every word in the ready-made decks.

Also new since the last version on the App Store

- Paste a word list from your course, and the app turns it into a deck.
- The vocabulary check shows you in a minute which deck to start with.
- "Wörter durchgehen" sorts out the words you have known for a long time.
- Sentence building: put example sentences from your decks back together.
- Verbs show their preposition ("warten auf + Akkusativ"), a rules page explains articles, cases and adjective endings, and every word shows its word family.
- The daily reminder says how many cards are waiting.
- Tidier settings, and a field for feedback and wishes.

Your decks, your progress and your streak survive the update.

### 1.5.0 — 2026-09-17

Six ways to learn

New: "Deutsch tippen", where you type the German word for an English meaning and a small slip does not count as wrong. "Hören", where you only hear the word and choose its meaning. And "Lückentext", where you find the word missing from an example sentence. The app can read every word aloud, and example sentences can be played.

Goethe-Zertifikat word lists

New ready-made decks with the words of the Goethe-Zertifikat A1, A2 and B1 word lists, plus the 4000 most frequent words. Find them under "Stapel entdecken" in the "Beliebte Wortlisten" section. New cards come in random order instead of alphabetically.

Grammar

Next to the article drill there is now a plural drill and a verb drill, both with the words from your own decks.

Statistics

A forecast of the coming days, a practice calendar, your vocabulary by stage and your hardest words, which you can practise in a round that leaves your schedule alone.

Calmer learning

You decide how many new words a day come in. Due and new cards are counted apart, the last answer can be taken back, and a session ends with the words you missed. When everything is done for today, the home screen says when the next card is due, and your streak holds even if that was fewer cards than your daily goal. Search finds words typed without umlauts.

Large text

At the largest system text sizes, cards, answers and the home screen fit on the screen, with no words broken in the middle.

Backup

A backup takes your decks and progress to a new phone, also between iPhone and Android.

More accurate cards

Every card of the ready-made decks was checked by hand. The meaning you need first leads ("das Mal" is "time", "günstig" is "cheap", "Wein" is "wine"), with the right article ("die Steuer", "das Gehalt", "das Schild") and no plural nobody uses. Nearly all 164,000 words in the dictionary now have an English meaning. Entries are tidier too: meanings without footnotes glued on, and synonyms show their article and English meaning.

Your decks stay

The first start after the update unpacks the dictionary once more. Your decks, progress and streak stay as they are.

### 1.3.0 — 2026-09-14

Short English meanings

The back of a card now shows the English word instead of a long explanation: "Haus" means "house", "gehen" means "go, walk". The dictionary shows the English first for every sense, too.

Choose or type the meaning

Two new training modes: pick the English meaning out of four, or type it. Wrong options come from your own deck. Switch in the settings.

Swiping, simplified

Right means known, left means not known. The strength scale from the last version is gone. If you would rather tap, two buttons under the card do the same, each showing when the card comes back.

Didn't know it? Once more

A card you did not know comes back at the end of the same session, while it is still fresh. The summary then shows when each card returns.

A new look

New typeface, new colours, new icon. The article sits right before the word and the plural ending after it, the way a dictionary writes it: "das Brot, -e", "die Suche, -n".

Article trainer with your words

The trainer now asks about the nouns in your decks. Pick a deck at the top and go.

More decks

Fourteen new topic decks, from numbers and time to feelings, nature and everyday bureaucracy, plus decks by part of speech: the most common verbs, adjectives and nouns of each gender.

A settings tab

Training mode, daily goal, cards per session, appearance and import/export have their own tab.

Smaller and faster

The dictionary takes about 45 percent less space on the device, so the first start is much quicker. Words such as "Zeit", "Frau" and "Ei", which search used to confuse with identically spelled function words, are entries of their own now.
