A recent change appeared which drives me and my pets crazy. You used to be able to turn off the sound effects and they would stay off even when you turned off your phone and turned it back on and came back to the game. Now you can't turn off the sound effect until you have opened up the game so a loud chime sounds whoever you open the game or resume playing before you can turn off the sound effects.
