## What is Life Codex?

LifeCodex is an iPad app that functions as a UI wrapper for an SQLite database which contains tables of Life Objects and Glider Constructions.

The basic version has all known stable object up to 24 Bits, and all oscillators and spaceships up to 100 Bits in size. There are also about 25,000 Glider constructions based upon these objects.

Each object record contains the SOF, WCode, and RLE bit encoding representations, as well as a symmetry code. Oscillators also contain the Hickerson Rotor Descriptor. The UI provides a way to search the database based on any of these characteristics. Some objects contain a name, or discoverer. (Although at some point I stopped trying to figure out who the discoverer might be because it was more work that I wanted to put into it.)

The construction database has several parts. In addition to the constructions, there are tables containing more generic “components”. These in turn contain individual Glider constructions that use the component to construct new objects.

The app supports copying and pasting into Golly.

(Note: The app will run on smaller screens, but no guarantee as to the appearance or usability.)

This app does not collect, record or transmit any user information or data (including analytics) to any webserver. The objects and patterns are public domain. No claim of ownership or copywrite for any Life bit pattern or data is made.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.0.5 — 2026-08-05

Updated database.

### 1.0.4 — 2022-06-23

Database contains all stable objects up to 24 bits. Known oscillators up to 21 bits. Pseudo-objects up to 18 bits.
Includes over 25,000 Glider constructions. These include constructions for every objects of 17 or fewer bits. (Except for about 20 17 Bit Period 2 oscillators) And over 2000 for 18 bit or larger objects.
Includes almost 1100 construction components.

### 1.0.3 — 2020-09-19

Database now contains almost 13,000 constructions. These include constructions for every objects of 16 or fewer bits. Also includes over 1000 17 bit object constructions, and over 1000 for 18 bit or larger objects.
Includes all stable objects up to 24 bits. Pseudo-objects up to 18 bits.
Include over 650 construction components.

### 1.0.2 — 2019-10-06

Added 21-bit and 22-bit stable objects and pseudo objects to 16 bits. Now contains over 7000 Glider constructions.

### 1.0.1 — 2019-03-09

Database now includes all stable objects up to 20 bits in size, as well as all known oscillators and spaceships up to 100 bits. (Up from 18 and 30, respectively.) Added another 100 or so Glider Constructions, and also some cleanup of the datafiles.

Also, by request, include a link to an object's Catagolue page.
