### 5/5 — Better than I expected

*2017-01-23*

I wasn't sure if I would like this game, but I wanted to check out the genre. I was not disappointed, and I was surprised at how much I liked it.
I played through once and didn't complete all my goals; I don't want to spoil anything, but the achievements at the end give he idea that it's possible to have many different endings. I am definitely going to play through again and try to be evil, to see what happens.

### 4/5 — Necro thanks

*2016-12-18*

Necromancy as a playable game mechanic doesn't ever get a hint of spotlight, though thanks for at least including the option in part in this choice based game.

### 5/5 — Must get!

*2016-08-02*

This is a fantastic one, I've probably played it about 25 times and I'm still not bored of it! Would absolutely love a second, it's been long enough now 'cough' hint hint!

### 5/5 — Incredible, a hidden gem

*2016-07-13*

Life of a Wizard was a chance buy for me. Little did I know it was a very immersive CYOA with countless decisions. I was fortunate enough to almost always have at least one option for every check on my first run (thanks summoning) but I do wish there were a rewind option. I know why there isn't but I feel like it would be beneficial in case of a mis-click or if the results weren't what you wanted. Regardless of this I wholeheartedly recommend this game.

### 5/5 — Couldn't put it down!

*2016-06-21*

I really enjoyed this interactive fiction game! Being able to create my characters history so thoroughly was quite fun, and seeing that translated into stats and abilities was great.

I was amazed at how many variable choices there were during many scenarios and it felt like there were always several interesting ways to handle each if the stats were good enough.

There were one or two instances of weirdness where I failed to complete a quest properly, but was still able to receive the reward as if I had, and a few instances where I didn't realize I was doing an "evil" thing that hurt my reputation and were kind of frustrating.

Overall this game is great and worth your time!

### 5/5 — The best choice of games

*2016-04-27*

Lucid's choice games are some of the best out there and this one is no exception. There are many routes to travel down without the game seeming repetitive. Well worth the price.

### 5/5 — 10/10 will play again

*2016-03-12*

The variety of storylines and character customization is unreal!!! I love this game and is unique yet following the classic Hero's Journey storyline.
Would recommend to anyone willing to give it a try.

### 5/5 — Really good

*2016-02-20*

Really good story that is definitely worth your money. One of the better choice of games I've played and I've played a lot of them.

### 5/5 — PLZ READ LUCID MUST FIX

*2015-12-25*

First of all this game is awesome get it.I loved this game the first time I played it but now after coming back to it it doesn't register all my gold, stats and makes my horses name none instead of what I chose plz fix!!!!

### 5/5 — One of my favorite games

*2015-11-04*

This was one of my first text based games and it is the sole reason I crave text adventures and spend hours upon hours playing. I absolutely adored this game and everything it has to offer; I've played through the game at least 30 times and I still enjoy it every time I start a new character.

### 5/5 — Awesome!

*2015-09-29, version 1.2.0*

Definitely fun and challenging!

### 4/5 — Magical!

*2015-09-08*

Well-written and really helps you choose your OWN story.

### 5/5 — best lucid’s game

*2015-08-20*

Totally rad game
it’s very exciting and a lot of things you got to do
it’s more on the gamey side but that’s why i loved it

my first play trough i become a drop out wizard from the academy and making myself a lonely necromancer that eventually conquer the world

the other play through i successfully graduate made the best party possible become a legendary wizard who give rise to the kingdom golden age

this game is pure gold
people at least try it before judging this as a book
this is a game

### 5/5 — Review

*2015-07-27*

This game is really fun, but you know what I think would be really fun? One of these games where you play as the newly crowned Monarch!

### 5/5 — Great.

*2015-05-22*

I love this game. I would like it if you could customise how you look not over do it though just like in imprisoned. I luv it along with the fact that you come out with about 3-7 new games per day.

### 5/5 — I loved everything about this game!!!

*2015-05-07*

It was amazing!!!! The choices were so creative and I thought the status set-up was genius!!! I hope that they make a Berserker or Warrior version to this cause I would buy the **** out of it!! Like not the same story but a Berserker on a quest to find out what his/her purpose is in his/her existence and has a awesome power to boot!!! Personally I feel that would make some serious cash!!! I give this a 10 out of 10!!!

### 5/5 — Not what I imagined!!

*2015-05-07*

This game is amazing! I loved the use of the many different skills and abilities, it really helped to make your diverse.

I think that it could have had more character to character but even without it the game is still phenomenal! I would recommend this to someone who isn't just trying to help boredom but to someone who really likes this kind of stuff.
Personally I think that you should make a second one!!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Game

*2019-04-24, version 1.2.1*

No money

### 2/5 — Not Worth the Money

*2018-09-30*

It’s a cool game with interesting choices, though it’s not easy to maneuver. I wish there was a rewind button, because there were several times I had misclicked. The game doesn’t last very long, and visually it’s not very pleasing. I wish I had read more into the game before buying it. It also would help if there was music. It was soundless gameplay, and the end of it was the furthest from fun.

Buy this if you don’t care about wasting your money for maybe half an hour of gameplay.

Don’t buy this if you realize the same (or a better) effect could be achieved from finding a dungeons and dragons campaign to join.

### 2/5 — Boring

*2016-12-20, version 1.2.0*

The writing style is really bland and disappointing.

### 2/5 — It's good but...

*2013-06-06, version 1.1.2*

So the game is really good and worth the money. The writing is fun and well done, but I've had the same error pop up each time I try to advance past the first quest in the dwarf city. From there it won't load the next scene. I've re-downloaded the game 4 times but it doesn't work.

### 2/5 — Suddenly Nothing...

*2013-06-05, version 1.1.2*

I honestly thought the game was amazing at first. It have great replay value and the story makes you want to never stop reading. I would have loved to read it all, but apparently once you make it to your final choice before leaving the dwarves, the game completely cuts off after showing an error message. You can still continue playing, in a way, but you can't exactly continue reading. It would be like if an author wrote an outstanding novel and towards the middle of the book just cut off before finishing a sentence and left the other pages blank, turning it into something dreadful...
I would greatly appreciate it if the past comments where to be proven true and the game updated without the major error it has today.

### 3/5 — Life of a wizard

*2015-01-17*

Read,read,read,read,read,...where's the fun? I like reading but I thought there was going to be a bit of gaming. I bought this for nothing!

### 3/5 — Good Adventure, Bad Story

*2013-06-29, version 1.1.4*

I want to like this game much more than I do. The story is full of quests and adventure. Managing your party and getting stronger is great too. My problem is that, when reading a game (as opposed to playing one), character interaction is key, and it feels as if there is none in this game.

Best example: you can get married, but unless they are in your party, you will essentially never see them again. Same with friends, and acquaintances. Even then, your best friend might be in your party, and the game refers to her as 'the thief.'

These issues cause the game to feel sterile, and as such, I can't rate it as highly as other similar games.

### 3/5 — Fun, but something has changed

*2013-06-07, version 1.1.2*

I love this app! An amazing story, plenty of choices, I'm played through several times just to get different endings and I love them all. But now every time I get to the dwarf city it won't let me continue. Please fix it, I love this game otherwise.

### 3/5 — Crash

*2013-06-07, version 1.1.2*

Right after the raider storyline the game crashes at the begining of the fire elemental lord story arc. Please fix this

### 3/5 — Amazing story

*2013-06-07, version 1.1.2*

This app has amazing potential with all the different choices to make, but when you collect the reward from the dwarf chief the game just crashes and you cannot continue. I really wanted to see where this story was going because even in its incomplete form its still better than some other choice games out there.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Great story

*2025-05-09*

I rate this game five stars!because it is so much like dungeons and dragons

### 5/5 — Great game

*2022-09-18, version 1.2.3*

Love the story, there are so many possibilities and variations I’ve probably spent hours and hours with this game, redoing various things for different endings or paths to follow. Very in depth too. Love it!

### 5/5 — Great game

*2021-12-12*

I love this game. There are so many options that you can choose early in the game that affect your choices later on that it gives the game great replay value. There are a few suggestions I’d make (BEWARE OF SPOILERS BELOW).

1. I’d add more achievements, especially for more niche accomplishments (end game with maximum possible fame, end game with maximum possible peace/army power, win while only having friends/followers who are gnomes, etc…)

2. If the player fails at something because a given stat is too low (ie the collective rating of the party when they face the dragon), telling them what the required value is diminishes the replay value (it especially de-incentivizes options that give them a crystal ball).

3. When healing the headmaster of the academy, the option to use the player’s troll blood is visible regardless of the race of the player.

4. I don’t k ow if this was intentional, but the Diplomacy is super easy to max out as it gets increased even for choices that are only tangentially related to diplomacy.

### 5/5 — Awesome!

*2020-05-25*

Great game, good replay-ability. I don’t think it needs music at all, I would probably just mute it or ignore it. I mean you can literally just play your own, but no text based game Ive ever played has had music anyway. Just good story, good fantasy genre, and good fun

### 5/5 — Worth the money

*2018-12-06*

The simple writing style makes it easy to understand and the stats are relatively easy to grasp. Also incorporates some nice curve balls where you sometimes just have to use logic instead of pure stat based decisions. Overall, the high replay ability and simple style of the story boded really well with me. If you’re someone looking for extravagant writing and “big words” I would not recommend this. However, if you’re looking for simplicity and a nice story with high replay ability, then this is one of the best.

### 5/5 — Great game

*2018-07-13*

Fun to play through a bunch of times to get the different achievements

### 5/5 — Wonderful!

*2017-10-02*

Lots of fun. Couldn’t stop reading!

### 5/5 — Pretty much the best Choice of Games book ever

*2017-03-09*

It isn't particularly long but it has so much depth. I've played through this at least 30 times and still enjoy it.

### 5/5 — AWESOME

*2017-03-04*

This is one game I will never regret buying. I loved playing and discovering all the different out comes for hours and hours. The only thing it needs is sequels. MORE Fantasy games this epic and I will not hesitate to download.

### 5/5 — Best choice game

*2017-02-26*

This really is an excellent game where your decisions really do have consequences later in the game. By far the best choice game I have played. Also, look out for The Lost Heir series by the same author.
