### 5/5 — Great app

*2026-02-10*

Works great! I wish that it saved files as .txt, or other files types. Las, I wish the app icon was more minimalistic and customizable

### 5/5 — Just working

*2026-02-05*

Just do for what it was created

### 5/5 — This is the one

*2026-01-05*

Sometimes you just need plain text with no fuss. It has Find and Replace and a few other utilities but keeps things tasteful by not presenting toolbars and buttons.

### 5/5 — Simpel, funktional und dennoch sehr leistungsfähig.

*2025-12-30*

### 5/5 — Simple Text Editor

*2025-12-09*

Simple and just right

### 5/5 — Just what I wanted

*2025-12-08*

Just to prove sometimes the simplest is the best, this is a perfect little app.

I wanted a plain ASCII text editor which I could use for text based files such as .txt, .ini and .html files, and this is great. It doesn’t attempt to change or interpret different formats, it just lets me edit.

### 5/5 — Super Helpful

*2025-12-01*

I frequently have to work with formatted text where I just want an easier editor that will let me work on it in a large size without its original format and then paste it elsewhere as plain text. This app does just that, and I love it. Thank you for making it!

### 5/5 — Great!

*2025-11-23*

It takes notes. I don’t need a subscription or the cloud. It’s a good app.

### 5/5 — Perfect

*2025-11-20*

Exactly what it says it is, love it

### 5/5 — fontastic

*2025-11-04*

I can't stand apple's text editor and have searched the universe for a replacement. So far, this is the best. I want simple. This is simple. I want a reliable save function. Text Editor has it. A bonus I enjoy = the ability to choose fonts. This feature increases the readability of my notes. Thank you developers!

### 5/5 — A no-nonsense editor

*2025-10-25*

I like a stripped down text editor with very little memory overhead. This perfectly fits that bill. Highly recommended.

### 5/5 — Simple yet Effective

*2025-09-03*

Does exactly what it says and nothing less or more

### 5/5 — Best light weight text editor

*2025-08-29*

Was looking for a nice simple text editor for Mac. On testing a couple this one was easily the best.

### 5/5 — Works great

*2025-08-28*

Does just what it should

### 5/5 — Simple and efficient

*2025-06-23*

I was looking for a simple tool to take quick note.
Just a plane white board to write quink note and reminder.
I would say is the old Notepad for Mac.
As bonus it has some useful features:
- find and replace
- uppercase and lowecase
- spelling check.

It does a simple job and it does it right.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Export functionality broken

*2025-07-14*

The export function stops working after a few files have been exported, and it produces lorem ipsum Chinese text about an aspiring executive exploring 3D printing who has never seen a woman in a relationship before. I wish I was joking.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t allow you to move the files where you want them

*2025-04-10*

It does simple plain text edits, however it puts them in a folder called “Documents” but has no way to move them to any logical place where you can use them. You can’t move them to a folder in iCloud files or Files on the phone, and in you search for the file name you created with Lightweight Text Editor while in a folder in Files, it won’t find it. I just wanted to crate plain text files to store in Files folders, but this app doesn’t do the single thing required to be useful, it won’t let you put the saved file where you want it.

**Developer response:** You can import files (via + button in explorer) and you can export files (via ... button in file viewer) from/to the Files app (including iCloud).

### 2/5 — Update

*2026-06-26*

Update

### 2/5 — Problems with big files

*2026-02-20*

First it worked very well and as expected. After I had to read a bigger file (>4GB) it didn’t stop loading and had to be deinstalled. Didn’t even work after reinstalling. 🤷‍♂️

**Developer response:** Thank you for the feedback. Lightweight now includes a 100 MB file size limit to prevent the app from getting stuck when opening files that are too large to handle reliably.

### 3/5 — Only some file types

*2026-07-14*

Didn’t let me open or edit CSS files although they are essentially plain text.

**Developer response:** Fixed in the latest app update. Thank you for your feedback.

### 3/5 — The launch app window is too small

*2025-11-22*

The window size s not remembered when you close and relaunch the app. It opens in small size. Fix it please.

**Developer response:** Fixed!

### 5/5 — I use this to edit AI responses outside of the email, text or word processor. Very convenient.

*2026-08-14*

If I see something I want to quickly store for later use or reference I use this app. I use Google Keep on my phone but on the iMac I use this app. Its simplicity is the biggest reason I use it.

### 5/5 — Great app, but needs a small fix for file exporting!

*2026-08-14*

Thank you for creating such a wonderful and useful text editor app. I really enjoy using it!However, I found a small bug when exporting files to the iOS Files app. When saving a new file to local storage, the app does not automatically add the ".txt" extension. This causes the file to appear greyed out and unopenable in the Apple Files app and other applications. The problem is solved only when I manually type ".txt" at the end of the filename during export. It would be much more user-friendly if the app could automatically append the ".txt" extension to exported files.Thank you again for your hard work and great app! I look forward to future updates.

### 5/5 — Lightweight (it’s in the name)

*2026-07-22*

Brilliant notebook app to use, I have to use several as a writer, and this is one of the best I regularly use. Thank you.

### 5/5 — Thank You x a Zillion!

Thank You x a Zillion!

## Most praised reviews (6 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Perfect

*2026-06-06*

Exactly as advertised. No fuss. Even has option for folders. *chef’s kiss*

### 5/5 — Clean & Easy-to-use

*2026-06-05*

This app lives up to its name perfectly - it’s simple to use, a few minimalistic features and clean. For many things I don’t feel I need all the extra flashy features of a word processor but rather just a simple place to type and make sure my indentation is clean and consistent and this does just that. I think it’s a small step up from Apple’s built-in text editor in all the right ways.

### 5/5 — Just A Text Editor. Nothing More.

*2026-05-21*

The basic test editor I was searching for a while. Finally I found this one.

### 5/5 — Top wie erwartet

*2026-05-12*

Die App macht genau was sie verspricht, danke!

### 5/5 — Straightforward text editor

*2026-05-11*

So far this app is doing what I hoped (I’ve been using it only a few times in the one week since I downloaded it.) This app took a plaintext image transcription created by Google Gemini 3 and retained the layout and spacing. Google Gemini creates transcriptions in a Plaintext format that I could not easily figure out how to get MS Word or Google Docs to retain. This gem did the task by default, no special keys or menu gyrations. Simple copy & paste in to Text Editor.

This is a very good addition to my toolkit.

### 5/5 — Simple and efficient

*2026-04-22*

Very easy and quick platform that doesn’t necessarily need you to have strong wifi to write on the go and save with no extra fancy stuff.
