## What is Liminal Cosmos?

Can you see the northern lights tonight, from right where you are? Liminal Cosmos turns live NOAA & NASA space-weather data into one clear answer, then shows you why, in 3D.

Most aurora apps give you a number. Liminal Cosmos gives you a verdict for your exact location, the storm behind it, and an on-device assistant you can actually ask, with nothing sent to a server.

CAN I SEE IT TONIGHT?
Your personal aurora forecast folds the live Kp index, your geomagnetic latitude, cloud cover, moonlight and darkness into a single visibility verdict, updated as conditions change.

IT TELLS YOU BEFORE DARK
Switch on the nightly verdict and one message arrives each evening, before the sky goes dark: whether tonight is worth going outside for, and what is spoiling it if it isn't. Most nights it says no, which is the point. It saves you the drive.

ASK WHY, PRIVATELY
A built-in assistant, powered entirely by on-device Apple Intelligence, reads the same live data you're looking at and explains it in plain language. Ask "why is Kp high tonight?" and get a real answer. The assistant runs entirely on your device, and your questions are never sent anywhere.

THE AURORA, IN 3D
Watch the live auroral oval wrap a real-time 3D globe, or flip to a flat heatmap. Your location is marked, so you can see exactly how close the lights are.

THE SUN, IN 3D
A 3D sun globe with active regions and sunspots, live SDO and SOHO imagery, and an animated SOHO/LASCO coronagraph loop: the real machinery driving every aurora.

EVERYTHING THE EXPERTS WATCH
Live Kp, solar wind, Bz, the NOAA R/S/G storm scales, X-ray and proton flux, and NASA DONKI events (CMEs, flares, coronal holes): the deepest space-weather data in any aurora app, made readable.

ALERTS THAT EXPLAIN THEMSELVES
Get notified the moment a storm makes the aurora worth chasing, with a rich notification and an alert detail that names the cause, the solar region, and what to expect.

BUILT FOR PEOPLE WHO LOOK UP
Whether you're chasing the lights in Iceland or tracking the sun from your backyard, Liminal Cosmos is the one app that answers both "can I see it tonight?" and "what is the sun doing?"

Solar activity is high, and the years after a solar maximum have historically produced some of the largest storms. Don't miss the night it reaches you.

Data from NOAA SWPC, NASA (DONKI, SDO, SOHO) and Open-Meteo. Liminal Cosmos is not affiliated with NOAA or NASA.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 0.0.07 — 2026-09-02

#### What's New (v0.0.07)

The answer opens the app now, and on the nights it's no you hear it before you reach for your coat.

TONIGHT'S ANSWER, FIRST THING
• The verdict for your exact spot now opens the app, instead of sitting behind the globe on the next tab
• It no longer goes missing when the aurora map's own data is down

A MESSAGE EVERY EVENING
• New: one message before dark, saying whether tonight is worth going outside for and what's spoiling it if it isn't
• Most nights it will say no. That is the point: it saves you the drive
• Switch it on from the card on a quiet night, or in Settings, under Notifications

A MORE HONEST VERDICT
• A bright moon no longer writes off the whole night. It washes out a faint aurora and leaves a strong one standing, which is what actually happens outside
• After dark, the verdict uses NOAA's live reading of where the aurora actually is, instead of a forecast for the whole planet
• The app tells you when it is measuring and when it is predicting

FIXES, ALL OVER THE APP
• The Tonight card is readable in light mode, opens in a moment instead of eight seconds, and no longer reloads every time you come back to the tab
• It no longer grows by half its height when the forecast lands
• The range picker on the Bz chart no longer drags the solar wind chart with it
• One storm now gets one colour, on the badge, in the list and on the card
• A place you set by hand stays set, instead of snapping back to where you are
• The assistant switches on as soon as Apple Intelligence finishes downloading, with no restart
• When marking an alert read fails, the app says so instead of leaving the badge up

#### Previous (v0.0.06)

• Aurora Tonight on your Home Screen or Lock Screen, with the one thing holding tonight back
• Ask the on-device assistant what a storm alert means where you are
• The Kp chart reaches back 30 days and a full year, from an archive we keep ourselves
• Cloud cover no longer goes missing on nights with less than an hour of darkness
• Deleting your account now clears everything tied to it

### 0.0.06 — 2026-08-11

#### What's New (v0.0.06)

Tonight's answer on your Home Screen, and an assistant you can ask about any storm.

TONIGHT, WITHOUT OPENING THE APP
• Put Aurora Tonight on your Home Screen or Lock Screen
• Tonight's verdict, and the one thing holding it back

ASK ABOUT ANY ALERT
• Open a storm alert and ask the on-device assistant what it means where you are
• Your questions stay on your device and are never sent anywhere

KP HISTORY THAT REACHES FURTHER BACK
• The Kp chart now goes back 30 days and a full year
• The history comes from an archive we keep ourselves, past the window NOAA publishes

FIXES YOU ASKED FOR
• Cloud cover no longer goes missing on nights with less than an hour of darkness
• Solar wind and plasma readings stay up when NOAA sends a bad sample
• Deleting your account now clears everything tied to it
• Performance improvements and bug fixes throughout

#### Previous (v0.0.05)

• Fixed your space weather data at the source. NOAA retired several of its feeds, so we moved solar wind and current conditions onto the new ones to keep every reading accurate.
• Push notifications are more reliable, and your alerts keep working even when NOAA drops out.
• Alert notifications now arrive with an image, so you can see what's happening at a glance.
• The aurora globe animates more smoothly, and tonight's verdict animates the moment it changes.
• Added haptic feedback throughout the app.
• Clearer, friendlier messages when something goes wrong.
• A big accessibility pass, with better labels on the globes, charts, and alerts for VoiceOver, plus bigger, easier-to-read numbers.
• Colour and polish tweaks across every screen, with lots of speed improvements and bug fixes.
