## What is Liminal?

The philosophy degree you didn't take... in your pocket, in your own time.

A four-year course of study in Western philosophy: 104 lessons from the Pre-Socratics to contemporary thought, laid out as four years of numbered courses.

The first 10 lessons are free. One optional in-app purchase unlocks the remaining 94.

The Curriculum

Year 1 - Foundations & Ancient Philosophy (5 courses, 28 lessons)
1.1 Introduction to Philosophy; 1.2 Pre-Socratic Philosophy; 1.3 Socrates and Plato; 1.4 Aristotle; 1.5 Hellenistic & Late Antique Philosophy.

Year 2 - Medieval & Early Modern Philosophy (6 courses, 26 lessons)
2.1 Augustine and Patristic Philosophy; 2.2 Islamic and Jewish Philosophy; 2.3 Scholasticism; 2.4 Renaissance and Early Modern; 2.5 Continental Rationalism; 2.6 British Empiricism.

Year 3 - Modern Philosophy (5 courses, 21 lessons)
3.1 Kant's Critical Philosophy; 3.2 German Idealism; 3.3 Utilitarianism and Marx; 3.4 Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche; 3.5 American Pragmatism.

Year 4 - Contemporary Philosophy (7 courses, 29 lessons)
4.1 Early Analytic Philosophy; 4.2 Phenomenology and Existentialism; 4.3 Critical Theory and Postmodernism; 4.4 Philosophy of Mind; 4.5 Philosophy of Language; 4.6 Contemporary Ethics and Political Philosophy; 4.7 Philosophy of Science.

- An 82-term glossary, cross-linked from the lessons
- 23 quizzes, 319 questions, each with an explanation of the answer

- 10 branches of philosophy, each linking through to the related courses, thinkers and terms
- Spaced review: flashcards over the 82 glossary terms, on a schedule that stretches as you get a term right
- Full-text search across lessons, courses, philosophers and glossary entries
- Bookmarks and private notes
- Progress tracked per year and per course
- Read-aloud on any lesson, using the on-device system voice
- Three home-screen widgets: Quote of the Day, Term of the Day, Philosopher of the Day

What It Costs

Liminal is free to download. The first 10 lessons are free - all of PHIL 1.1 and the first five lessons of PHIL 1.2 - and so is everything else in the app: all 48 philosopher profiles, the whole glossary, all 23 quizzes, the thought experiments, spaced review, search, notes and the widgets.

One optional in-app purchase unlocks the remaining 94 lessons. It is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. It restores on your other devices signed in to the same Apple Account, and it supports Family Sharing. There are no ads and nothing else to buy.

Scope

This is Western philosophy, from the Pre-Socratics to contemporary thought. Year 2 runs from the Church Fathers to the early moderns and gives Islamic and Jewish philosophy a course of its own: Avicenna, Averroes, Al-Ghazali and Maimonides alongside Augustine and Aquinas. The curriculum does not cover Eastern or Asian traditions.

There is no video, no discussion feed and no cloud sync. Your progress lives on the device you read on.

Privacy

Liminal has no servers of its own. There is no sign-in, no analytics, no advertising identifier and no tracking, and nothing you do is uploaded. Your progress, bookmarks, notes and review schedule are stored in a database on your device. Every lesson, quiz and profile is already installed, so the app reads the same in Airplane Mode; the only network use is Apple's own, when you buy or restore the unlock.

### 5/5 — Promising

*2026-08-05*

Hi, I'm really excited to use this app, but unfortunately there's a bug that closes the app every time i try to take the first test. Just wanted to let you know so you can look into it. But I love philosophy and your app looks super promising!

**Developer response:** Thank you for reporting this, and sorry you hit it. It's fixed in version 1.2, which is on its way to App Review now. Five stars while it was crashing on you was generous, and I appreciate you taking the time to say something. Have fun on your learning journey.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.4 — 2026-08-27

Practice questions have been rewritten so the correct answer can no longer be identified from its shape. Options within a question now share the same form, length and structure, so the right answer has to be recognised rather than guessed. Question wording and explanations were reviewed alongside it.

### 1.3 — 2026-08-19

Squashed bugs. Enjoy!

### 1.2 — 2026-08-11

Quizzes open again
Opening a quiz could crash the app. That is fixed, and all 23 quizzes work normally.

New name
The app is now called Liminal: Learn Philosophy. Your saved progress, notes, bookmarks and review schedule carry over.

Corrected attributions
Seven quotations in the philosopher profiles and the Quote of the Day widget were credited to the wrong person and are now correct. The best known of them: "We are what we repeatedly do..." is Will Durant's own line from The Story of Philosophy (1926), summarising Aristotle rather than quoting him, so the widget now uses Aristotle's own sentence from the Nicomachean Ethics. Several loose paraphrases that had been printed inside quotation marks are no longer presented as direct quotes.

Two factual corrections as well: one about J. S. Mill's The Subjection of Women, one about Al-Ghazali.

Also fixed
- Spaced Review now reaches its Session complete screen, which was previously unreachable, and two buttons in that flow that did nothing now work.
- Search ranks exact name and title matches first, so searching a philosopher surfaces the pages named after them instead of burying them under lesson body text.
- Progress bars no longer show a filled sliver at 0%.
- The app now recovers instead of crashing if the on-device database cannot be opened.

### 1.1 — 2026-07-29

Version 1.1 is a small release.

Once you are a few lessons in, Liminal may ask whether you would like to rate it on the App Store. The question only comes up after you finish something: a lesson marked complete, or a quiz worked through to the end. It appears at most once per version of the app, and dismissing it costs nothing.

There is also a new Rate Liminal row in the Progress tab, for anyone who would rather choose the moment themselves.

Nothing else has changed. The curriculum is the same 104 lessons across four years, with the same philosopher profiles, glossary, quizzes, and thought experiments, and Liminal remains entirely offline.

### 1.0 — 2026-05-19

No release notes.
