Point your camera at anything, tap once, and seconds later you have a finished piece of art made from your own photo, ready for your wallpaper, a widget, or StandBy. There is no prompt to write. Your iPhone paints and grades the photo itself, then inscribes a line composed on-device about what it saw. It works in airplane mode, with no account and nothing uploaded. WHERE YOUR PORTALS GO A portal is meant to be used, not filed away in a gallery you never open again. - Wallpaper. HOW ONE PORTAL IS MADE Liminal is a camera and a darkroom in one app: the shot and the finished print happen in the same place. 1. Frame a moment. Your street, your window, the light on your kitchen table. 2. Tap once. Nothing to type, and no server to wait on. 3. The image comes back painted, graded and inscribed, and it is already yours to set. The whole thing happens between the tap and the next few seconds, on the phone in your hand. NOTHING TO WRITE You are not describing a picture to a text box. There is nothing to get right and no keyword to invent. The photo is the whole instruction, and the line that ends up under it is composed on your iPhone out of what the camera saw, so it belongs to that moment and to no other one. NOTHING EVER LEAVES YOUR IPHONE Liminal runs entirely on your device, which means it runs in airplane mode. Switch the radios off on a plane or stand in a basement with no signal and make a portal anyway. Your photos are transformed on your phone and stay on your phone. There is no account to create, no analytics and no server anywhere on the path. Sharing happens once, when you export a card yourself and hand it to something else. The old mark went muddy at the size you actually see it, in search and on the Home Screen, so the doorway was redrawn to hold its edge small. Captions in your archive were being cut off mid-word. Each plate now carries its full inscription as real text, so it follows your type size and can be read aloud. The reveal screen has a way out. Discard sits next to Keep, and it tells you what it costs before it does anything. iPad is a real layout now rather than a stretched phone. Sheets open at page size, About keeps its picture and its credits, the style room stops clipping its last row, and Delete moved into the plate's toolbar menu so it cannot be pushed off the screen. Settings reads more clearly. Rows that open a room, rows that leave for the web and rows that only report a fact no longer look alike. You can also see how much space your plates take up, and remove all of them in one step. About has a More from Hadger section, with a couple of the other apps we make and one line about each. It sits under the studio links, quiet, with nothing that moves. ### 1.2 — 2026-08-08 Liminal has a new room. The app is now a dark space with a lit threshold in it, and the light is generated on your iPhone rather than painted on — the reveal is drawn by a real light simulation, so the glow around your plate has a source and a falloff instead of being a gradient. Your archive changed shape. Plates no longer sit in a list: they hang on a single thread of light that the app draws from your own plates, so an archive of three and an archive of thirty look genuinely different. The first run was rebuilt too. Instead of an illustration of a threshold, you now approach the real one — it comes nearer on the second screen, and you step through it. Also fixed: long inscriptions were being cut off mid-word on the plate itself, including on the wallpaper you set and the card you share. They fit now. ### 1.1 — 2026-08-07 Tap a Home Screen widget and it now opens that plate, instead of just opening Liminal. "Create a Portal" is available from Spotlight and Shortcuts. Premium now exports every plate without the marque — including the ones you made before you subscribed. Buying and restoring finally say what happened. Waiting on Ask to Buy, a purchase that did not go through, or nothing to restore on this Apple ID each get their own answer instead of silence. Prices always come from your own App Store. If the camera is interrupted by a call or another app, Liminal now says so and offers a way back, rather than showing a frozen viewfinder. When there is no camera, the shutter opens your photo library instead of doing nothing. The quota line and settings stay readable against bright scenes. VoiceOver now announces which style is armed, and the Privacy and Terms links are properly sized.
