Nothing else, but it does vocab really well. You can virtually forget about the speaking, listening and grammar sections. And it has really helped me French improve. But, there are a couple of things I’m very concerned about: One is that, to my memory, the app has never been updated since I first downloaded it a couple of years ago. Like never. It’s pretty stable, but there are some bugs, and it doesn’t seem like these will ever get addressed. I’ve put in a couple of support enquiries before and received no response whatsoever, so I have the impression that someone has made the app, put it on the App Store and has abandoned it. Thirdly, and this is more of a gripe a functionality thing, the sentences the words are presented within are very dry and conservative. You get the impression that the entire world exists in heterosexual nuclear families where mum stays at home and dad works a corporate job (or perhaps is a civil servant). It feels very hard to relate to and, crucially for language learning, is not memorable. ### 2/5 — Conversation *2026-05-26, version 2.65.3* Very poor. I’ll say the exact word, but it only hears the first part, so you have to type it in. Only certain words though, mostly it works. Zero added features that hundreds of users thoughtfully suggested and although the Dev responds to just about if not every review & rating and is most courteous and grateful sounding but actions show that it’s all lip service. So many hundreds of small improvements simply ignored. I have been stuck at 6 percent vocabulary for some time. Despite getting 41 percent correct the last time, the program won’t give me any new words. So much so, that I might as well be working for them. Don’t waste your time or money with this app. There are so many errors in this app. I’d be outright embarrassed to release this to the public. The ability to do vocab by speaking (which is why I downloaded this app) just straight up does not work. I contacted support multiple times to explain the situation and request a refund, but my emails were completely ignored. Since the subscription was made via Apple ID, I cannot resolve the billing issue directly in the app, which makes responsive support even more important. I hope the developers will finally respond and issue a refund after this public review. Very disappointing experience and poor customer service. I would not recommend this app due to the lack of transparency and support. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Go For It! *2026-05-28, version 2.65.3* Lingvist has been the best app so far in regards to me learning Russian. I can’t thank this community enough. I believe that there is a science into learning or acquiring another language and I believe Lingvist has got it down to a T, please don’t ever stop working on this app. This subscription is worth it if you’re serious about language acquisition. Russian is no easy language and I like how they have it set up to introduce even novice learners to become familiar with words while also displaying how they’re supposed to be used in context. There’s a certain amount of hours that’s needed to be put in to acquiring the language and Lingvist helps track it down making it easier to accomplish my goals!! I’ve had to figure out my own routine and how I could best utilize the Lingvist app to make the most out of it based on the way I learn languages the best. But I can’t express how much Lingvist has contributed to so much of my Russian language journey ! Maybe in the future, adding a section to where learners can test & gauge their language proficiency would be really cool! One request - in some cards in the General deck you ask questions like “your brother is small” where we need to fill in “your” in French. However you don’t specify which Your you want - formal or informal; therefore students have a 50-50 to answer it correctly. If your cards can specify formal vs informal for sentences like this it would be helpful. This app is perfect for pushing me to the next level. It’s great for practicing different conjugations and usage. It’s not just a vocabulary app. And yet you can use it as a vocabulary builder as well. I also love how you can create your own card sets very easily. So you can truly customize and prioritize your learning. Hoping the next generation of the app includes more information in the tables and notes menu at the bottom of the screen. Would love to see all the conjugations for verb cards. Also, would love descriptions in the notes for similar words. Like in Spanish, the difference between volver and regresar, or despedir, echar, and soltar. I think the note section could give more context for nuances of similar words. ### 5/5 — Lingvist is like a MAGIC WAND for language acquisition *2026-01-04, version 2.64.2* Lingvist is hands down the best language learning app out there, and, believe me, I have tried them all (including all of the fully paid versions). I took French in school, but never learned to actually speak the language (despite always getting As). Over the years, I have wanted to fix that and finally learn the language for real, once and for all. I am not exaggerating when I say I have tried ALL the language learning apps out there (and not just the free versions, but the fully paid subscriptions). Many were useless, some were very good, but nothing compares to Lingvist. When I started using Lingvist, MAGIC happened. Suddenly, I was able to read novels (actual novels written for adults) in French, including books that I had purchased years ago but given up on as impossibly difficult, and even watch many movies/TV shows in French (something I had all but forsaken). Lingvist made my vocabulary EXPLODE—and somehow, I just remember the words I learn in Lingvist so much better than through other similar apps. As if that weren’t enough, Lingvist has an amazing feature that lets you create custom decks of words to learn. All you have to do is type in a list of words you want to learn, and Lingvist defines them and creates sentences with them. You can even tell Lingvist to expand on your custom list and find other similar words to add. I have no idea why Lingvist is so much more effective than other similar apps, but it just is. It’s like a magic wand for language acquisition.
