Every time I put my phone down the game starts over and no I haven’t closed the app that’s stupid

Gee, I like the game, but I'm
Having a difficult time getting the items I need to 
Solve it. I have 5 ladder rungs to get up to top floor
But it won't let me up. 
Can't find any other color 
Dots to finish the color and numbers on the sign. So what do I do? If go out of the game to get a clue, I have start all over again. :(
