### 2/5 — Abandoned product?

*2019-09-28, version 1.3.0*

*The Good*
WiFi coverage is solid.

You can prioritize a device, such as your family Roku/TV.

*The Bad*
No PPPoE authentication, so if your fiber internet uses this you get to connect Luna to an old router.

The security network scan feature is not helpful. If a device has 1,000 entries, you can’t just dismiss them all. No, you’d have to manually swipe-delete each one.

UI-wise, they have No Dark Mode. Small grey text on a white background is hard to read.

*The Ugly*
I paid for premium support (5$ a month) and ticket requests are often ignored. Cancelled premium.

The VPN service doesn’t work. Rather than notify customers, I had to ask why it doesn’t work and was told they are negotiating with service providers to resolve the issue. I wonder how many people think the are in “stealth mode” when they aren’t?

Lack of customer communication as to what features work, don’t work now, or have been abandoned.

Promised core features that were advertised, like knowing where your kids have been online, were never delivered.

### 2/5 — Dead product

*2019-06-20, version 1.2.3*

The WiFi works and the app has some nice, albeit limited features. Unfortunately, the app and the Luma devices themselves haven’t seen any updates in over a year. I’m convinced this is dead product. If you’re considering a purchase, you may want to look elsewhere.

### 2/5 — No updates in over a YEAR

*2019-03-12, version 1.2.3*

If you’re going to sell a product and market it as safe, how can it be safe without consistent updates? While it seems to operate effectively, the lack of updates is sorely disappointing, especially considering the numerous alternatives out there that do.

### 1/5 — Getting Worse, Getting Worse, Getting Worse

*2019-01-11, version 1.2.3*

Unlike some of the other reviewers, I don’t mind the app. It’s not great, but when it actually connects, it works fine.

The devices are garbage. I’ve had two of five fail already and the ones that still “work” go down constantly, three to four times a day. It’s frustrating and I’m out.

Anyone wanna buy some crappy WiFi equipment?

### 1/5 — Spotty at best

*2018-12-31, version 1.2.3*

Unfortunately, we have the original Luma and also added two additional nodes. All five nodes are in a ranch style home and we STILL experience spotty coverage. I am terribly disappointed but we’ve spent too much to just toss them, right? Hopefully, the software will be updated in the future to make this purchase worthwhile.

### 1/5 — Is this company still in business?

*2018-12-24, version 1.2.3*

No app updates for over 1yr. Unacceptable!!

Bugs in the app like I cannot get rid of one of the devices that isn’t on my network - but keeps showing up.

Firmware of Luma pods hasn’t been updated either. Think this company is not doing well. Website is still up but nothing looks recent or up to date.

### 2/5 — Broken links

*2018-12-19, version 1.2.3*

The app is great until you need to troubleshoot. You get sent dead links and forced to wait several minutes between messages from customer service.

### 1/5 — Unstable.

*2018-11-16, version 1.2.3*

Connections constant going in and out. Have to call them everytime to complain, they do something on the back and and it works great for a weak and then back to normal. Not enough advanced configuration capabilities and no real future suppose anymore

### 1/5 — Great start, but failed on execution

*2018-11-13, version 1.2.3*

The premise was solid—mesh WiFi without all the knobs to turn. When it works, it’s great. But the Luma devices fail and have issues, and the company hasn’t/doesn’t fix or update. Their support does not respond to calls and can only read from their VERY small FAQ when it comes to answers.

Bought these as a pre-order but I have to switch in order to get reliable WiFi in my house.

### 1/5 — Retarded App

*2018-11-03, version 1.2.3*

No overview of the network infrastructure. No option to monitor package or viewing the WAN IP address.

Don’t buy these Mesh Routers!

### 1/5 — Needs more improvement

*2018-10-27, version 1.2.3*

It has been more that a year and they haven’t updated the app for IphoneX. It’s a shame.
Luma promised to rollout instant viewing when they launched the Luma product two years ago but they never did.
I should have stayed with Eero!!!!

### 1/5 — Product is dead

*2018-08-14, version 1.2.3*

Haven’t updated for a long time. Both software and hardware have quite some annoying bugs. Already switched to a different brand and works so much better.

### 1/5 — Good to bad

*2018-08-06, version 1.2.3*

Originally I was decently satisfied with the system. It looks like they have changed ownership and they are not quite sure what they are doing with the brand. Newell Rubbermaid purchased and nothing! 11 months and no updates. The system is failing and it is headed to the dump.

### 2/5 — WiFi great...app not so much

*2018-07-30, version 1.2.3*

Luma has virtually stopped supporting the app and their product since the new owners took over. Too bad. One of the first to market for a home mesh network but just couldn’t keep up. Newer, faster options are coming up with improved parental features and user management.

### 3/5 — In dire need of an update

*2018-07-24, version 1.2.3*

Have had about a year. Device is great, app is okay, but I could really use to be able to mass-wipe alerts when I want to, instead of deleting them one at a time. Checked about an update notification to the software and saw it hadn’t updated in a long time...almost since I got it, honestly! This is rare compared to similar products, and doesn’t show that there is care and feeding going into things. This is sad because it seems to be doing nicely otherwise!

Three stars because I would give more if I at least saw an update, and five if I could clean those alerts faster.

### 1/5 — Luma: down the tubes

*2018-07-20, version 1.2.3*

When I first got Luma it was great. Then, one of my 3 units stopped working. I reached out to tech support for help. Got advice, but after that didn’t work, my support ticket went into a big black hole. I tried Twitter, I tried reaching the new parent company. It took weeks. Finally I got hold of someone who, after practically bickering with me, sent me a new replacement unit. It has never worked and now their app doesn’t either (it says it can’t connect to the Internet, but clearly if I can access the App Store to leave this review, I am connected. There’s no app update. This whole thing is a total disappointment, waste of money. No wonder they’re failing.

### 1/5 — Horse sh.. app and product

*2018-06-27, version 1.2.3*

App has not been updated in over 10 months. Great concept,...product execution, not so much. Forked out $300 for a set of three just to sell it 11 months later for $50. Stay away!!!

### 1/5 — Where's the speed...

*2018-06-21, version 1.2.3*

I have had luma for over a year. First bought this to cover our 3000 sqft ranch style home and coverage has been good. Recently upgrade my internet service to gigabit and can not get more 30-50Mbps standing next to the node directly connect to the gigabit modem. It is suppose to support gigabit and no matter what I have tried it will not support it.

### 2/5 — WiFi is great. App is terrible.

*2018-04-06, version 1.2.3*

Why oh why can’t this developer get an update out?? The app has some nice-ish features, but they definitely need some polish. Aside from the app starting to show some wear at the seams, there are a bunch of other problems that I really wish they’d address... but apparently won’t.

For example, the developer hasn’t made any effort to update the app to be compatible with different screen sizes (*cough cough iPhone X*). The app also constantly logs out—like every SINGLE time I’m away from the app for more than just a couple minutes. This gets pretty aggravating when I’ve got guests over and they’re all joining my network.

Bottom line, 7 months is way too long for a phone app to go without an update, especially when the app you do have out is glaringly missing features.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Clean layout. Terrible functionality

*2020-11-19, version 1.4.0*

App layout is nice. There are multiple missing functionalities that I have had to turn to the internet for. The product Israeli would get less than 1 star. Very disappointed. Would not purchase again.

### 1/5 — no longer functioning

*2020-07-20, version 1.3.0*

this app no longer works. no support, no help...

### 1/5 — Run away. Company abandoned this.

*2020-06-30, version 1.3.0*

Luma was sold to another company and they let this die.

### 1/5 — Horrible

*2020-03-28, version 1.3.0*

Not even an email or alert for the customers.

### 1/5 — Luma is now abandonware

*2019-11-06, version 1.3.0*

As others have mentioned, Luma as a company no longer exists. First Alert bought them in January of 2018 and promptly stopped releasing new firmware updates. Just a week before they announced the aquisition of Luma, First Alert released their own mesh WiFi system. I suspect Luma was bought for their intellectual property and/or engineering staff, and that First Alert had no intention of supporting the Luma system.

In the last few weeks my Lumas APs have been constantly dropping WiFi connectivity. One minute my phone is online and getting 300 Mbps on a speed test, the next minute it has no WiFi and I can’t even see my SSID, the next minute I’m back online. I called First Alert customer support and they said, “after 3-5 years your Luma devices are nearing the end of their life.” What? These things are all solid state components, why would they suddenly stop working? It’s more likely that First Alert is no longer interested in spending money supporting Luma and fixing problems. But hey, he did pitch me on buying First Alert’s own mesh WiFi system. Fool me once...

### 1/5 — Don’t bother

*2019-10-07, version 1.3.0*

Ever since luma was bought out, there has been a lack of updates for the hardware and app. You’re better off with a well known router brand like Netgear, linksys, google, etc.

### 1/5 — WiFi was great until it wasn’t

*2019-07-23, version 1.2.3*

Tech support is horrible - every time I get someone on the phone, the call dies out. I have tried reaching out thru the app and no luck. I do not think they are maintaining this application any longer. The app is even worse and hasn’t been updated in over a year. My Luma keeps saying offline so I did a hard reset but when I try to access app to set it up again I get kicked out of app within 2 seconds. I do not recommend this product.

### 1/5 — Luna

*2019-06-12, version 1.2.3*

This app is terrible, I don’t recommend, the wifi doesn’t get thru my whole 2 story house and we have 5 of them.

### 1/5 — PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE UPDATE THIS APP!!!

*2019-05-31, version 1.2.3*

I’m using the Luma app on my iPhone XR and it doesn’t fit the screen! Also, things all over the place are buggy and out-of-place. You have to dig to find settings that should be right there!! I love my Luma, but the lackluster app that controls it totally ruins the experience.

So please, listen to the people who spent good money on their Luma’s and update the app. We would all be forever grateful! 🙌

### 1/5 — First alert

*2019-02-19, version 1.2.3*

First alert, if you're serious about acquiring this company how about develop some updates. People are going to flee away from this product unless it stays current.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Switching due to Apple

*2018-05-09, version 1.2.3*

Since Apple no longer supports my AirPort Extreme, I needed another option. Have to say, I’m impressed. I’m a home user, not highly conversant in internet protocols. I know I want something simple, seemeless, fast, and secure.

The Lumas are delivering. I got a two pack for my small apartment and they are doing a great job this far. Yea.

### 5/5 — A++

*2017-12-02, version 1.2.3*

Great product with easy support. Definitely recommend.

### 5/5 — I like it

*2017-09-05, version 1.2.3*

I moved into a 2 story home. My do it yourself web wasn't working. Family complaining.
Initial set-up was easy, and finally had coverage thru the house.
But the next day I lost coverage to my office. Just about the time I got an email from Luma asking to help with any problem.
They worked on the system over the internet, now I have full coverage.
They have great support, you just have to ask.

### 5/5 — Home WiFi problems solved!

*2016-07-18, version 1.0.2*

We finished our basement about 2 months ago and have been frustrated trying to get WiFi coverage there since the project completion. Kid's entertainment area - no streaming NetFlix or PS4 connectivity; Kid's study area - no laptop WiFi connection; husband's gym area - no Sonos connectivity. We had purchased 2 routers and returned them both as did not solve the problem. As of this weekend, WELCOME LUMA! A 3-pack with one unit placed in the basement not only gives us full bar WiFi coverage in our entire home, but is giving us speeds that we've never experienced. My husband jokes that it's nice working from home compared to the office due to the better and faster connection.

We hit one snag during setup that Luma support handled successfully within a few minutes on the phone, and other than that setup and use has been easy. After a significant investment to get our basement done, Luma has now completed the project!

### 5/5 — Luma = Future of Home Internet (80+ Connected Devices!)

*2016-06-27, version 1.0.1*

My overall experience with Luma surround Wi-Fi has been exemplary. From opening the box and unpackaging the hardware (put together so beautifully, just like when you get a new Apple product) to installing it, using the full of features app and being able to control your home Internet from anywhere has been amazing.
It is lacking some features… It goes out ~10% of the time and when I have 50+ devices connected -- I think it gets a little confused. So I very much look forward to firmware updates and spreading the word of this magnificent machine.

### 5/5 — Easy to Setup and Security is great!

*2016-06-27, version 1.0.1*

Our main concern was the wifi security and the extension of wifi. We have a lot of devices like phones, tablets and computers that use it but also gaming systems and speakers. The Luma system and app helped smooth it all out! I think the app set up was easy to use as well. I understand some of these reviews say some features aren't out yet, but it is a new product and there are already more features than the competition. The joy of the system is that it Updates! I think too that some of the really technical features are actually not needed by most. The built in security functions and wifi extension have been great! Extra features will only make it better!

### 4/5 — Update

*2017-11-15, version 1.2.3*

Tech support has improved dramatically and all three units stay connected. I would still need a 4th to cover my small house but I would recommend if the price comes down.

### 4/5 — Good product

*2016-08-05, version 1.0.3*

The LUMA is intended for the basic homeowner looking to add quality Wi-Fi service with web content filtering with beer little effort.

I approached the setup from the mindset of a novice user. Setup was simple and painless.

There is a guest network and a separate password.

As in all, the standard user we'll be well pleased. You can create users and content profiles such as PG-13, etc...once devices connect, assign a user to a device. When they attempt to connect to content that is blocked, they can request to gain access and an alert is sent to the administrator.

Note: the notification feature is not available yet. Additionally, there is no explanation of what categories are being filtered.

For the techie's, you are all early adopters, and with that comes features you want but are not available yet... Changing your DNS, Port-Forwarding, web console to administer /tweak settings.

These options are coming, and should not be faulted for it. If you bought it as as an early adopter, this is part of the deal.

### 4/5 — Great product, great app, setup needs some updates

*2016-08-01, version 1.0.3*

Luma has been a great tech addition to our apartment in Chicago! With our current inital setup, placement for the router was limited, restricting signal to some areas of the unit, especially the master bedroom. With Luma installed signal is as strong as ever, in every corner of our home!

Challenges: Initial setup required some restarting of the app, reconnection of Lumas, but after completion, no issues with any of my devices. App is great for sharing connection info and monitoring performance. Better device support to understand all connected tech would be great, but I understand its still early days, and I am hoping that improvements with come with future updates.

If those challenges can be address, then this is easily 5 Stars. Great job guys!

### 4/5 — Great WiFi Coverage

*2016-07-31, version 1.0.3*

I received my Luma 2 weeks ago and had a great out of box experience. The system was easy to install and came right up as I followed the instructions in the app. Signal strength is vastly improved at the ends of my home compared with my previous centrally located router. I found no degradation of my network speed. My only complaint is that I can't administer WiFi access to individual users/devices as it's currently an all or none proposition. I'd be very surprised if this isn't something on Luma's "to do" list and I expect to see it in future releases. The other really cool feature is that the app control is hosted in the cloud so I can police internet access for kids who may not always shut down the computer while their parents are out of the house. Thanks Luma!!!
