## What is Lumen Darkroom?

Lumen Darkroom is a focused photo editor for iPad that keeps your work clear, local, and reversible.

Bring in a photograph and shape it with precise tools for light, colour, detail, crop, rotation, and masking. Your original stays preserved while every change remains part of a recoverable edit history.

Built for the tablet, not shrunk onto it:

• A single touch drives whichever tool is in your hand, with hand, move, marquee, lasso, zoom, select subject, paint, sample, and type.
• Apple Pencil pressure feeds the brush engine directly, modulating tip size and flow as you draw.
• Two fingers pan and zoom, a two-finger tap undoes, and a long press opens the full context menu.
• Attach a keyboard and every desktop shortcut is there.

Made for thoughtful, hands-on editing:

• Adjust exposure, contrast, RGB and per-channel tone curves, temperature, tint, saturation, and vibrance.
• Inspect the red, green, or blue channel as a grayscale plate on the canvas.
• Develop supported camera RAW files with controls for exposure, white balance, detail, noise, and local tone.
• Refine detail with sharpening, blur, vignette, film grain, and monochrome controls.
• Crop, rotate, and flip with predictable output.
• Paint, erase, clone, and heal on editable pixel layers with procedural brush tips, symmetry, and dodge and burn.
• Select a foreground subject and export it as a transparent PNG.
• Read a live histogram and sample RGB or LAB colour values.
• Organize your work with layers, masks, blend modes, visibility, opacity, snapshots, undo, redo, and history travel.
• Save a complete .lumen document with the source image, edit history, preview, and selection mask.
• Keep documents in iCloud Drive and open the same document on your iPad and your Mac.
• Export colour-managed PNG, JPEG, TIFF, and HEIC files, or add the result straight to your photo library.

Lumen uses native Apple technologies and does not upload your photographs. Your files stay on your iPad unless you choose to export or share them. There is no account and no login.

Lumen on iPad is landscape and requires an iPad running iPadOS 17 or later.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.0.8 — 2026-10-15

Accessibility

- Text follows your text size on iPhone and iPad, up to the largest accessibility sizes. At those sizes the iPad switches to the single-column editor, so nothing is cut off.
- VoiceOver and Voice Control: every slider, curve point, look and layer has a name, and sliders and curve points step up and down.
- Clearer contrast: all text reads at 4.5:1 or better.
- Reduce Motion now turns off every slide, fade and pulse.

Fixes
- The Looks sheet has a Done button, and the slider bar has Close.
- Export on iPad no longer cuts off Save to Files and Save to Photos.

### 1.0.7D2 — 2026-10-10

Atelier is made for iPhone Duo.

- Closed: colour on the cover, as on any iPhone.
- Tabletop: the page above the fold, your pigments, media and history on the half under your hands.
- Book: the page alone on one side, every control on the other. Paper, Pages and the pigment tin open in that half instead of a sheet.
- Fully open: the full Atelier bench across the screen.

Your page, pigment, zoom and pan carry across every pose, and a stroke in progress is kept when you fold. Also fixes the Atelier bench on smaller screens.

### 1.0.7D — 2026-10-07

Lumen is made for iPhone Duo.

- Closed: grade on the cover, with every mode in the side column.
- Tabletop: a clean monitor above the fold and a darkroom console below, with pads, a scroll wheel and an A/B button under your thumb.
- Book: the original or a reference photo with live scopes on one side and your edit on the other. Curves get a whole half, and the photo becomes the tone picker.
- Compare: the original and the edit side by side, zooming together.
- Fully open: one canvas across the screen with brush, eraser, clone, heal and the layer stack.
- Present: stand the Duo up and show a client before and after, hands free.

Your edit carries across every pose. Also fixes a vignette render fault on iPhone and iPad.

### 1.0.7 — 2026-09-28

Introducing Atelier, a painting room inside Lumen.

- Colour a page facet by facet with pigments that behave like real media: fill, pencil, watercolour wash, beads and foil.
- Turn one of your photographs into a page, with pigments matched to it.
- Pick from six collections of pages and continue any page where you left off.
- Brush Studio gains the same physical media for paint layers.
- Larger, higher-contrast labels and readouts across the app.

On iPad, Apple Pencil paints and your finger pans. On iPhone, Atelier fits in one hand.

### 1.0.6i — 2026-09-22

Lumen now runs on iPhone. The full darkroom is here, not a viewer and not a companion to the iPad app, and the same document opens on either device and on the Mac with every step intact.

The interface is rebuilt for one hand. The photograph fills the screen, the tone strip sits under your thumb, and Tone, Curves, Colour, Detail, and Film pull up from the bottom as a ribbon you can dismiss with a swipe. Curves works under your finger with a single channel isolated, crop and straighten snap to the common frames, and Select Subject isolates the foreground. The library holds your recent work and hands back the last photograph you were editing.

Landscape is supported throughout, the layer stack opens as a sheet, and export goes to Photos, to Files, or straight into a share sheet.

Siri and Shortcuts drive the iPhone build exactly as they drive the iPad and the Mac, so a sequence of adjustments you run often becomes one shortcut on your Home Screen, in Control Centre, or under a spoken phrase.
