## What is Luney?

Luney is an 18+ social app for LGBTQIA+ people, built so you never have to choose between being yourself and being safe. Make a friend, share your photos, join a live audio room, plan something or watch reels.

WHY LUNEY EXISTS
Most social apps are made for people who are already out and safe. Luney is made by queer people for the rest of us too: the person still in the closet, or the one whose phone was just taken.

FIND YOUR PEOPLE
Add friends and keep a Circle for those you trust most. Direct messages carry photos, GIFs, reactions and voice notes, with a transcript your phone writes without sending your voice anywhere. Sort chats into folders, pin a message or a whole chat, and set a status: an emoji and a short line under your name that clears itself.
Groups are public or private, with posts, chat, members and custom emojis. Moderators get slash commands, and every ban, kick or mute needs a logged reason. @mentions and #hashtags work everywhere.

GALLERY AND ALBUMS
Keep photos on your profile without posting them. Choose who sees each one, blur what you'd rather hide, and let friends like, react, comment and tag. Sort them into albums, share an album so friends add their photos too, or turn on a link so people without Luney can see it on the web. Everyone in a shared album is told when someone screenshots it.

LIVE LOBBIES AND EVENTS
Lobbies are drop-in audio rooms: raise a hand and the host brings you on stage. Events take RSVPs; a group event is visible only to members.

REELS
Add text, stickers and an MP3 over the original sound, each with its own trim and fade.

EXPRESS YOURSELF
Posts get reactions and threaded replies, and you can schedule one for later. Friends can leave notes in your guestbook, which you approve. Pick a theme, Pride Mode or Soft Mode.

PRIVACY
Closet Mode hides what you do from anyone outside your Circle. Stealth Mode also turns off read receipts and hides your online status. Hide comments that use words you list, and stop brand-new accounts from messaging you. Luney removes where a photo was taken before it uploads. A timeline shows what has happened on your account. Export your data in one tap; delete your account and you get thirty days to change your mind.

SAFETY TOOLS
Panic Mode: tap the Me tab a few times and Luney turns into a working calculator. Type your PIN and press = to come back.
Date Check-in: set a time to check back in; miss it and your Trusted Circle gets a discreet alert.
Trusted Circle: up to five friends who get those alerts.
Find help near you: LGBTQIA+ crisis lines, clinics, housing and legal help, country by country, checked by a person and kept on your phone so it works without signal.
Capture protection: you are told when someone screenshots, and sensitive screens blur in a recording.
You can block anyone and report anything, anywhere in the app.

LOOK AFTER YOURSELF
Take a break pauses notifications for an hour up to a week, with an away note for people who message you. Set quiet hours for each day, and a daily reminder when you have spent as long in the app as you want to.

NOTIFICATIONS
Push alerts and an in-app inbox. Turn each kind on or off, with different settings per group, and mute any chat.

Email, Apple, Google or Discord, or a magic link. Two-factor is available.

LUNEY VIP
A monthly or yearly subscription for animated avatars and banners, bigger uploads, unlimited gallery room, styled display names, and a different name and avatar per group.

Made by queer people, for queer people. Come find your people.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.5.0 — 2026-09-25

## 1.5.0+49, 2026-09-24

### New
Your profile has a Gallery, for photos you want to keep without posting them, and new tabs: All, Posts, Photos, Albums and Reels. Choose who sees each photo, blur what you'd rather hide, add a title and an image description, and let friends like, react, comment and tag. Pin favourites, search your photos, see your photos from this day in past years, and find every photo you're tagged in under Privacy.

Sort photos into albums, each with its own cover and audience. Share an album so friends add their photos too, or turn on a link so people without Luney can see it on the web. Everyone in a shared album can caption its photos and is told when someone screenshots it. The owner can let everyone save the photos, or pause new ones.

- Voice notes in DMs and group chats, up to 2 minutes. Your phone writes a transcript without sending your voice anywhere. Drag to any part, play at up to 2x, and search chats by what was said.
- Set a status: an emoji and a short line under your name, for friends or everyone, that clears itself when you choose.
- Take a break: pause notifications for an hour up to a week, show as offline and leave an away note. Safety alerts still come through.
- Daily time reminder: pick how much time a day is enough and get a heads-up when you pass it. It's counted on your phone only.
- Chat folders: sort your chats into your own folders.
- Schedule a post up to 60 days ahead. It goes out even if your phone is off.
- Hidden words: comments on your posts and photos that use words you list are hidden from everyone else.
- Limit new accounts: stop accounts less than a week old commenting or messaging you. Friends always can.
- Guestbook: friends leave a note on your profile, and you approve each one.
- Invite friends and get a thank-you code when they join and take part. Redeem codes from Luney events in Settings.
- Quiet hours can be different each day.

### Changed
- Download my data includes everything new in this update.
- Luney removes where a photo was taken from every photo before it uploads, and is cleaning older photos too.
- Group post drafts keep their photos.
- Reactions give the same light tap as a like.
- Any number of chats can come through during quiet hours.
- Tapping Joined on a group asks before you leave it.

### Fixed
- Messages with a button close on their own after a few seconds (they stay with a screen reader on).
- The switches for achievements, friendiversary cards and trusted circle requests now save.

### 1.4.4 — 2026-09-22

## 1.4.4+48, 2026-09-20

### New
- Messages you send with no connection now wait and send themselves when you are back online, even if you have left that chat or closed the app. They show a small clock until they go. Photos still need a connection at the moment you send them, and a message that has waited more than 12 hours asks before sending.
- Each group has a simple choice for its chat notifications: All messages, Only mentions, or Nothing. Long-press the group on the Groups tab or in Your groups and tap Notification settings, or tap your own photo inside the group.
- The GIF picker starts with a row of the GIFs you sent most recently.
- A profile photo or banner that the check on your phone reads as explicit is not accepted, because those show everywhere your name does. The picture never leaves your phone for that check. If it got it wrong, tap Ask for a review: a person on the Luney team looks at it and, if it is fine, puts it on your profile for you. You get a notification with the answer. A picture the team has already reviewed and turned down is recognised next time, so it is refused straight away. The same check covers a group's photo and the photo or banner you wear inside a group, and you can ask for a review of those in the same way. When you create a group, the photo is sent for review once the group exists.

### Changed
- GIFs in chats load much faster. The app now picks the lightest version of each GIF, shows a still frame straight away at the right size so the chat does not jump, and starts loading a GIF the moment its message arrives. Tap one to see it at full quality. That includes GIFs from your favourites. Only GIFs sent from now on are affected.
- If Luney moderation removes your profile photo or banner, the inbox notice says which and why, and adding a new one tells you when you can if there is a wait.

### Fixed
- Trending hashtags on the search screen count posts again, not only reels. A tag from posts shows up once at least three different people have used it, and only the number is shared, never who posted or what they wrote.
- Message pop-ups inside the app now stay quiet for chats and groups you have muted, and follow each group's notification choice.
- If Luney moderation changes your name, handle, photo or banner, or your VIP status changes, the app shows it straight away instead of after a restart.

### 1.4.3 — 2026-09-22

## 1.4.3+46, 2026-09-17

### New
- Find help entries can carry more details, like a weekly drop-in programme or session times, behind a More details link on the card.
- Settings > Notifications has a new switch, Mentions cut through muted chats. It is off, so a muted chat stays silent, mentions included. Turn it on and an @mention in a muted chat still notifies you.

### Fixed
- "Here now" stops counting you as soon as you open another screen over the group, not only when you leave it.
- In-app message toasts for a chat you just left work again; they stayed muted for that chat until you opened another one.
- Group cards on the Groups tab no longer cut the member count short on tablets.
- "Here now" updates the moment someone opens or leaves the group, on the group screen and in the lists.
- A bad connection at launch no longer signs you out. Only the server saying the session is gone does.
- Edit details on a group's Details tab: the back button on the settings screen works again.
- Tapping a mentioned name whose handle has an underscore could do nothing; it opens the profile now. Typing @ and a name with a dot in it keeps the suggestions open so you can pick the person.
- Screen readers: every switch on a group's settings screen says what it is for, the photo and poll buttons in the group post composer have names, and the small close and remove buttons across Home cards, the weekly prompt thread, poll options and the chat help card are easier to hit.
- More of the app follows your language: policy titles on the review screen, "earned 2 days ago" lines, the GIF favourites limit sheet, invite link statuses and a few headings that were still English.
- Saving quiet hours works again. Since it shipped, flipping the switch or changing a time saved on the server but showed an error, so the screen never caught up.
- With App Lock and the Panic Mode calculator both on, the calculator PIN opens the app. App Lock no longer asks for its PIN straight after.
- Notices about group join requests, both the "asked to join" one and the approved or denied one, now follow your notification settings, quiet hours and Panic Mode's hold like everything else.
- "Here now" on a group counts the people who actually have that group open, not everyone who is online somewhere in the app. One member online used to show as 1 here now on every group they share with you. The count shows on the Groups tab cards as well.
- A chat left open while your phone was locked now shows the messages that came in meanwhile. Before, a group chat stayed as it was until you restarted the app. The same goes for comments on an open post, the lobbies list, the notifications inbox and the bell badge.
- One notification when someone mentions you in a chat. It used to send the message and a second "mentioned you" notification.
- Your notification settings apply to every notification again: the switch for each type, quiet hours, and Panic Mode's hold. Friend requests and accepts no longer notify twice, and the stray "did something" notification is gone.
- Group chat: the banner keeps its size while you type a longer message. The text box grows instead.
- Message pop-ups for a chat come back while another screen is open over it, like a profile or a photo. They used to stay silent until you closed the chat itself.

### 1.4.1 — 2026-09-18

## 1.4.1+45, 2026-09-16

### New
- Panic Mode can open the app as the calculator every time. Settings > Safety > Panic Mode > Start in the calculator. Luney comes back when you type your PIN and press =. Your Trusted Circle is not told when you open the app; typing 911 or 999 still alerts them.
- Panic Mode can hold notifications while you are covered. Settings > Safety > Panic Mode > Hold notifications while covered. No push notifications while Panic Mode is active, or while Start in the calculator is on and the app is closed; your inbox still fills, and a friend's safety alert still comes through.
- When your PIN opens Luney after being covered, one line says how many notifications came in meanwhile, with a way to the inbox.
- With Start in the calculator on, the app switcher shows the calculator as well, not the last screen you were on. Come back within half a minute and no PIN is needed.
- When you delete your account, you can tell us what didn't work and whether we may email you about it. Both are optional, and Skip takes you straight on. Anything you write is deleted along with the account, or right away if you decide to stay.

### Changed
- Five wrong PINs in a row on the calculator pause the check for a minute. Nothing shows; it keeps doing sums.

### Fixed
- The Panic Mode calculator fills a tablet screen instead of sitting in the middle third of it. Phones look the same as before.
- The back button over a group's photo has a name for screen readers and a bigger tap area.
- After Sign out other devices, the list of devices updates on its own and the question card goes away. You no longer have to pull to refresh to see it worked.
- The unread count on the Groups and DMs tabs no longer breaks past one digit. It grows to fit and stops at 99+.
- Typing anywhere in the app now starts with a capital letter, the way the keyboard does everywhere else: posts, comments, replies, group posts, icebreaker and prompt answers, events, lobbies, feedback, reports and notes. Chats already did. Handles, emails, passwords, codes, links and search boxes are left alone on purpose.
- Group photo: a new crop screen. Drag the frame to move it and pull a corner to resize it to any shape. Rotate is still there.

### 1.4.0 — 2026-09-14

## 1.4.0+44, 2026-09-13

Find help near you

A directory of LGBTQIA+ crisis lines, clinics, housing, legal help and community spaces, country by country. Every place was checked by a person. Settings > Safety, or the new card on Home.

It works without signal: the list is kept on your phone. Each place says whether it is open right now, with Call, Text, Chat, Website and Directions buttons where the place offers them, what to expect on a first visit, and the ages it serves. A text line or web chat with different hours says so, and a phone line that costs money to call says that too. Search finds topics like HRT or name change, and a place can carry a description in your language.

Switch to Map to see the world, tap a country, then a region, then a pin for each city. The map is drawn by the app, with no map service involved. Save places to a list that stays on your phone, share one into a chat, or use "Something wrong?" if a place has closed or moved.

Also new

Links in chats show a preview card. Luney fetches the page for you, so your phone never touches the link until you tap it. Turn previews off for yourself, or for a whole group.

Your profile has a new look: one card for your photo, name, pronouns and bio, quick tiles underneath, your photos and reels in one gallery, and your posts grouped by month.

Settings > Privacy > "What people can see of me" turns your settings into plain sentences and tells you what changed since you last looked. From there you can see your profile exactly as a stranger sees it. A card on Home asks you to look every few months.

Groups show how many members are around right now. A number, never who. Whoever runs the group can turn it off.

Reporting a message in a DM can include the messages around it. You pick the days, preview exactly what would go, and only that is sent.

Remind me to reply: flag a conversation and it nudges you in an hour, eight hours or tomorrow. It never marks anything read.

Group admins can write a welcome message that every new member sees.

If your group has nobody but you holding a role, the group page offers to name someone or hand the group over.

Blocking now hides you properly: a blocked person cannot open your profile or autocomplete your handle. The Blocked list explains what they can and cannot see.

Chats can show the other person's local time, so you know whether it is a reasonable hour. Off until you turn it on.

Quiet hours can let up to two conversations through.

Give up a handle and it stays yours for 30 days, with a one-tap way to take it back.

If moderation changes your handle, name or bio, your inbox says what changed and why.

Tag a friend on a photo after posting, save your own photos to your phone, or share a post or reel as a card in five looks.

Changed

Dates follow your language's format everywhere. If your language and your habit disagree, Settings > Preferences > Dates lets you pick day first, month first or year first.

Muting a group now silences it fully, including your inbox.

Every post and photo on a profile has a three-dots button, so Save, Share, Edit and Delete are one tap instead of a long press.

Fixed

Screens that cannot load now explain themselves and offer Retry instead of showing an error. Group changes, votes and profile edits appear everywhere at once instead of after a restart. Several screens open quicker and keep their place when you come back.

Screenshots are blocked again.
