## What is lvlUpSysDesign?

lvlUp gives you a timed system design interview on paper and grades the
pages you draw.

It hands you one real system design question, starts a 35 minute clock, and
walks you through the four steps of the ritual. You work it out with a pen,
photograph your pages, and send them in. A minute later you have a debrief: a
score out of 100 across six dimensions, the evidence behind each one read off
your own page, what worked, the gaps, and one drill to run next.

THE RITUAL

Four steps, one clock, no restarts.

Framing, 5 minutes. Restate the problem. Agree on scope, users and success in
one sentence.

Estimates, 10 minutes. The five slots: volume, requests per second with a peak
multiplier, payload and egress, concurrency, and the judgment line.

Design, 15 minutes. Boxes and arrows, only after the numbers exist.

Parking lot, 5 minutes. Every open question lands here, and then you close them
out.

The clock shows the time left in the current step and the time left overall. In
the last minute of a step the digits turn warm. That is the only thing on the
screen that moves.

WHY PAPER

A real interview is a pen, a page and a clock. There is no editor, no
autocomplete and no undo, so practising in one teaches you reflexes that will
not be there on the day. lvlUp keeps the medium and takes the marking off your
hands: draw it, photograph it, send it.

THE DEBRIEF

It opens with the single biggest gap, because that is the one thing worth
fixing on the next attempt. Under it sits the DESIGN axis and its six rows:
requirements and constraints, high level architecture, data model and APIs,
scaling and bottlenecks, reliability and tradeoffs, and clarity of the drawing.
Each row carries its score and the line from your page that earned it. Then
what worked, then the drill.

PROGRESS

Every attempt is kept in order with its score, so the change is something you
can read rather than something you have to take on trust.

WHO IT IS FOR

Engineers preparing for a system design round, and anyone who has read the
theory and still goes blank in front of a blank page.

## Frequently asked questions about lvlUpSysDesign

### How does lvlUpSysDesign simulate a real system design interview?

lvlUpSysDesign simulates a real interview by providing a timed, paper-based mock exam. You work through the problem with a pen and paper, mirroring the actual interview environment without digital aids.

### What kind of feedback does lvlUpSysDesign provide?

After you submit your drawing, lvlUpSysDesign provides a debrief with a score out of 100 across six dimensions. It highlights your biggest gap, explains the score for each design axis with evidence from your page, and suggests a drill for your next attempt.

### Why is practicing on paper important for system design interviews?

Practicing on paper is crucial because real interviews use pen and page, without editors or autocomplete. This method helps you develop reflexes and problem-solving skills that translate directly to the pressure of a live interview.

### How does lvlUpSysDesign help track progress?

Every attempt you make is saved and ordered chronologically with its score. This allows you to visually track your improvement over time, making your progress tangible rather than abstract.

### What are the four steps of the system design ritual in lvlUpSysDesign?

The four steps are Framing (5 mins) to restate the problem and agree on scope, Estimates (10 mins) for key metrics, Design (15 mins) with boxes and arrows after numbers, and Parking lot (5 mins) for open questions.

### What is the age rating for lvlUpSysDesign?

lvlUpSysDesign has an age rating of 4+ and is suitable for a wide range of users.
