It’s a shame because the content is always good. Basically it’s just a badly formatted pdf with no interactive content. Updated 2024 - yep, those big ol’ bars are still there. Frankly, this is an appalling application which does the mag no favours, mind you for UK readers, the mag is very much US centric anyway. The UK based MacFormat mag is much much better. ### 4/5 — Only place dir top tier Apple News *2016-11-07* There are many places to get info on big red. But Macworld has been at it the longest. The writers true red Apple fans but they don't hokd anything back if they have a problem with the latest gadget or moves by Apple. If your thinking of chabging your OS or gadget or your a longtime fanboy or girl & want unadulterated reveies & articles Macworld is the gold standard. ### 4/5 — Mac Essential.... *2016-10-11, version 4.9.97* This is an essential magazine for the apple user. Gives you all the latest up to date developments from apple. Only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because I preferred the original layout. Down to personal preference. ### 2/5 — Not as good as the paper version *2016-03-11, version 4.9.86* There seems to be much less content compared to the paper version and not keen on the layout. Having said that, the content there is, is of a good standard. Hating the new layout *2015-11-30, version 4.9.86* Loved the old layout because I felt like o was reading a magazine. This new one is just pages with large font and the occasional picture. It's almost like reading a webpage on safari with reading list. I have both but MacFormat has a much more pleasant reading format and plenty of links to take you to products. ### 1/5 — App crashes now on ios9!! *2015-09-17, version 4.9.71* Since updating my iPad Air to ios9 the app crashes as it's trying to open. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app but still have the same problem. Have had no trouble with it previously. Have removed app and re-installed, restored purchases, tried downloading more than 10 times and won't work. Explained/complained could not complete the restore procedure and was told to try it again - so basically I've been defrauded of my subscription - better go back to buying a paper copy! I don't usually rant like this but it's completely outrageous to allow this sort of behaviour. Apple, aren't you supposed to provide QC? PS and now I've been asked to renew my subscription - really rushing to do that... ### 1/5 — Best avoided if you ask me *2015-01-09, version 4.9.71* Absolutely agree that the subscription mechanism does not work. For 3 months I've been unable to get anything. Restore purchases says they been restored and yet still it wants me to pay for each issue. Trying to pay fails as well. There's some ridiculous bolted on pocketmags account that doesn't work that seems to mess up Apples adequate system. ### 1/5 — No issues with the mag but the app.... *2014-12-28, version 4.9.71* Like the magazine and the content. Really dislike the app though. Restoring purchases just doesn't work. Had to restore my iPad3 and trying to view issues has been really hard work. Eventually got to read the magazine. Upgraded to an Air 2 and having the same problem. Lost count at the number of times I have tried settings and restore purchases. Subscription is due soon, I don't think I will bother. Update: since originally writing this review it has been updated to fix the subscription issue. Er, no it hasn't! Still won't recognise my subscription and allow me to download any issues. Will allow me to buy new issues though! ### 1/5 — No restored purchases and support abysmal *2014-11-15, version 4.9.54* The content of the magazine is good. However, I recently bought a new iPad and the app failed to restore purchases bought under my current annual subscription, even though it stated that it had. I cannot even download the current issue unless I pay for it again. I emailed the help desk and was told to register an account with PocketMags and advised to read the FAQs. I've done the former (a painful process filled with 'incorrect email/password' and 'account already exists' messages but eventually survived) and still I'm in the same boat. The FAQs don't address the problem in the slightest. My follow-up emails have been ignored. Customers having difficulties with their app are of no interest, it seems. They'll just go away. (Correct!) So, no issues unless I pay again, even though my subscription runs until February 2015. If I want to continue with the magazine, it looks like I'll have to go for the printed version. Very hi-tech! Avoid PocketMags like the plague, I'm sad to say. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Stop asking for feedback *2019-11-15, version 6.0.4* Asks for App Store rating and review in spite of this being disabled in settings! ### 1/5 — Locks up and buggy *2018-10-10* For some reason the last update has made it where it does not recognize when tap on it to open the mag. It just hangs up for a few minutes and then finally opens. I once had to delete it and reinstall but it still does the same thing intermittently. I use like the digital version especially the previous revision but now not so much. ### 1/5 — App fails to load *2016-11-20* I tried subscribing, only to find that the app will not open on my iPad Pro. Cancelled my subscription. ### 1/5 — Basically a newsletter *2016-01-13, version 4.9.86* I am a subscriber for this magazine for about 4 years and I used to love it, until it stopped publishing the print version and changed the layout of the online version. It is now basically a plain newsletter, not a prestigious great magazine anymore. I’m a long-time subscriber and the dumbing down of the latest version is daylight robbery. More like a succession of powerpoint slides than a properly designed and laid-out magazine.
