## What is Magic Reds ViewFinder?

Magic Reds ViewFinder presents a precise framing preview for the real camera/lens combination you'll be shooting with, right where you stand with your iPhone / iPad. It simulates the field of view of cinema digital cameras or lens and can help thousands of professionals in filmmaking at the preproduction.

PLEASE READ: this app does not turn your Apple device into an external monitor, but operates as a stand-alone tool.

The app contains ad banners, which can be  turned off with additional in-app purchase (in 'About the App' menu).

The app is a digital directors viewfinder - it helps you see the exact field of view for your future shot. Select the camera from the menu and rotate the wheel to select the focal length of the lens.

Magic ViewFinder simulates using tele adapters or anamorphic optics on your camera. From the menu you can also select the aspect ratio of the frame guide overlaying your image.

Magic ViewFinder also lets you apply some commonly used color presets (also known as LUTs) to the live picture, which brings you even closer to the final shot.

When you have found the right view, you may save it for future reference, with additional data like the focal length, date and time and camera / lens information.
While taking a photo, you may lock exposure and turn on and off the auto focus to better control the captured picture.

You can set camera to work in constant auto-focus mode, or lock the focus temporarily. You can also tap the live screen to focus on particular objects (which turns on the focus-locked mode).

White balance may work in Auto, Locked or Manual mode.

If the field of view of your real camera is wider than your in-device camera, the app adds 'padding' around the image, since the device cannot 'see' what is beyond. It is the best solution that we developed first amongst other viewfinder apps.

Please note that position of your iPhone or iPad should correspond to the 'nodal point' of your real lens, which is somewhere in the middle of the lens.

Please, please, please add a camera preset for Komodo. 

The Frame.io integration is so useful. In fact the Frame.io C2C(camera to cloud) integration is the killer feature. Whether for scouting with actual lens accuracy as to what lens(es) and focal lengths you’ll need or to on set inspirations for new ideas and the ability to share easily with crew and execute right away. 

Think you can get by with one lens? This app will prove it. Finicky about focal lengths? Try them all out with this app and have proof that you really do need that 12 lens package with still photos and video to show and most importantly share with others. 

This is a true preproduction and production tool that is very useful!

Great concept but the screen has no grid for composing shots as shown in the app display, this was disappointing.

As a red camera user’ I recommend this app to filmmakers even if they are not shooting with a red. It is essential framing guide that has replaced the measuring tape , I used. Any filmmaker needs this. But it is essential time saver for red camera film users.

Where are the options to change the sensor. What is a red camera? So many questions but I’m left to bumble through settings which mean nothing to me and I still can’t get it to do what I want it to.

Such a good concept. The ability to immediately save shots helps with location scouting and preliminary storyboards. I appreciate the sticky values for focal lengths. I’d love to be able to tap on a sticky value and snap to there, rather than lining up sliders and hoping I’m close enough. 

I would like to see the same with stops and distance on the DOF calculator; (an incredibly handy feature to have in the same app) the total depth readout is a welcome update. My only qualm with that tool is it visually represents critical focus as midway between near and far distances rather than 1/3, 2/3. 

The ability to apply and import LUTs is very useful. I’m the type of person who would love to have curves available in-app to create a look on the fly, but nonetheless, an impressive feature. 

If an update brought a sun/time of day tracker to the table, this app would have the market cornered.

All in all, a very strong app and I’m excited to use it more and see where it goes!

In the latest update you can find the feature of tapping the sticky values. The sliders in DOF calculator will get that soon too.

Please note that the axis of distances in DOF tool is not linear, so even though the blue lines are equidistant to the red line the actual distance to the far edge is always longer than that to the near edge of the DOF. This is done is resemblance to the marks on the older lenses with manual aperture adjustments.

Before I will be thinking about the tracker feature, I will introduce the geo location function which is in my pipeline.
