### 4/5 — Allow outside audio sources

*2023-10-16*

I’ve been playing for over a month now and I’ve been throughly loving the game. However I do not want to use the in game sound and instead listen to outside audio sources for music and podcasts. The fact that the game forces any other audio source to shut down when you open the app even with all of the sound settings turned off is very silly. It would be a very easy fix to disable that feature to allow players to listen to what they want when playing.

### 3/5 — Easy to learn, fun, annoying bugs

*2023-03-28*

I love the universe of Magic the Gathering, but I’ve never liked any of the direct ports of the paper game to digital form. They either cut too much out, or are overly clunky. But Spellslingers is the same world and flavor in a much more digital friendly format. It isn’t the same game, but it captures the spirit in a shorter, simpler way. Is it as deep as paper Magic? No. But it isn’t child’s play either.

The monetization is odd, I wouldn’t say it’s worth spending money on as you could drop well over $100 and not get the cards you want for a super specific deck. But, if you just play you’ll unlock all the cards you want in a few months.

My big gripe is the bugs on mobile. I constantly can’t even log into the game as it thinks I’m disconnected. Then, when I do get in, half of the matches never connect and count as losses for me. I don’t have any of those issues in the Steam version. Honestly, I’d be giving it 4 or 5 stars if it was even kind of useable mobile.

### 4/5 — Fun enough

*2023-03-01, version 1.04*

I like the Idea of a smaller, more vibrant, character filled version of a well established card game; it gets me better acquainted to the mechanics of the full game or at least it’s something to do when I’m bored. It reminds me of what Duel Links did for Yu-go-oh, and I’m still paying that… wish I could play sideways tho. Also, I’m a big advocate for more skip options for dialogue.

### 2/5 — Incredibly slow gameplay

*2023-02-13, version 1.04*

If you’re a fan of magic maybe pass on this one. It’s like an mtg/marvel snap crossover. But the thing I liked about snap was the quick games. This is not that. All creatures have vigilance basically but damage Carrie’s over from round to round. Tutorials went by quick enough but the first 4 or 5 games I played against actual opponents boiled down to play all your creatures swing all your creatures block all their creatures repeat. Maybe it gets better later, but the games last way too long to be that stale. At least in magic you have to think about swinging out so you can keep blockers up.

### 2/5 — Teferi Broken.

*2023-01-26, version 1.03*

I made a previous review about how broken teferi is and that will all the traps being played you can only use 8 cards in your whole deck because 22 cards get countered. You guys over buffed teferi and now I’m giving up and going to play teferi since I have all cards and planeswalkers. This game really became either rush decks or teferi stall decks for late game. Its excrutiating to play. Now I can’t play my favorite late game decks anymore. very upsetting. Its going to be 2 stars until this changes. I’m sorry but i’ll change it if the next patch changes anything.

### 4/5 — Hip, Fun and Highly Monetized

*2023-01-13, version 1.03*

Overall this game is an interesting take on the MtG series. With that being said, don’t expect the same game. This is entirely different, fast paced card game that feels more like Hearthstone with an MTG skin over it. Though it is very fun, progression through this game such as unlocking new cards and ranks moves at a snails pace as it desperately wants your money. I’ve sunk in a good amount of time and I’ve only unlocked 2 Spellslingers and because these playable characters are mana locked (Except for the 6 splash cards) I may never be able to play every deck unless I give in to the pay to win.

### 3/5 — Please more than 1 chance at events

*2023-01-10, version 1.03*

Please give events more than 1 chance to succeed. This is very disheartening and leads to rage quit attitudes. I’m not saying give me an easy win, I’m just saying give me more than 1 shot because if I pull a bad hand, I get no chance unless I spend cash. I have spent plenty of cash and I hope that you can realize that additional chances will lead to better moral, thus increasing chances to make a sale.

### 3/5 — Glimpses of being good

*2022-12-23, version 1.03*

Okay, to start I’ve played about 5 hours worth of game play now. So, that being said, this game is so close to actually being a binge worth game. However, it falls short and doesnt actually accomplish fun gameplay at all. In my experience so far there are certain characters and match ups that are literally unwinable unless you pay money and get better cards. This game is not balanced and is totally a coin flip on whether or not you actually get to play and strategize against your opponent. There are way to many variables for this to actually be a strategy game. Pick wrong deck or character in a totally random match up and the game is over before it even starts. You’re better off playing slay the spire if your looking for a balanced strategy card game! Occasionally you get an actual fun close match up that gives you that spark of what the game is supposed to be but those are so far and few between that your better off playing a different game.

### 3/5 — 1000 gems for one card????

*2022-12-22, version 1.03*

Ok here I am again with ANOTHER review. My complaint THIS TIME? The store…. Look… we all know it’s a new game that’s been in development for Easter’s and y’all tryna get your money back. Cool! But prorate the dang packs. When I have 6/7 cards for the Maniac pack, and my brother has two, and it costs us BOTH 1000 gems, that’s shady af…. Just saying. I spend money on the game, I get it, if this was real life and I’m playing cards I need to buy every pack to get the cards I want, but the fact is y’all are preying on the weak like Michael Myers chasing Stephen Hawking. Just because you know that not everyone pays attention doesn’t mean it’s ok…. Have some integrity man, stop pretending you’re hearthstone and be a BETTER game….

**Developer response:** Hi there, thanks for sharing this.  Ranks are typically reset each month to keep the spirit of competition alive (and so players can earn rewards). If you're seeing anything else that seems out of the ordinary, please reach out to CS and we'll investigate further.  https://magicspellslingers-support.wizards.com/hc/en-us

### 2/5 — Ehh it’s another pay to win game.

*2022-12-14, version 1.03*

It’s okay until you realize the only way to play is ranked and then when you get to realize that unless you pour money into the game you can’t win. It has been out a couple weeks and ppl already have the foil legends. I have made it to gold in the ranked and the only ppl I come up against are Ashiok and Angrath. They are way to over powered with their abilities. It was fun for the first couple weeks but then you get to the point where unless you buy the gems or gold it becomes another app sitting there until i need space on my phone.

### 5/5 — Good mobile-first digital CCG

*2022-11-05, version 1.01.02*

This game brings a great blend of Magic IP without the complexity of MTG Arena. I have found this game to fill a sweet spot that other digital first CCGs can do, while using existing mechanics and play styles from MTG. I’ve been hopping around from different card games, but this one offers a comfortable mobile experience with quick, easy, and fun gameplay I can squeeze into a busy lifestyle. Hoping this game continues to get support abs expanding the player-base.

### 5/5 — Mtg2go

*2022-10-28, version 1.01.02*

I don’t get as much paper magic in as I’d like to, as a competitive modern player and Cedh enjoyer, I struggle to include new cards to keep things fresh as I am constantly optimizing my decklists in paper.
Magic SpellSlingers allows me to play something new and fresh, and the games are quick.

Couldn’t ask for a better design

### 3/5 — Overpowered character

*2022-10-11, version 1.01.01*

Overall enjoy the game unless I’m playing against Ashiok. Her nightmare passive ability literally kills you for just playing, you can’t avoid drawing a card so you just have to accept the damage and 9/10, a card you probably don’t need or want. It would be alright if her nightmares only did damage but they also heal your opponent. This generally makes me not want to play matches just on the off chance I might be put up against her and lose or concede because there’s no way of beating her before you are overwhelmed by her draining your health(there are ways but RNG just doesn’t make it possible most of the time). Her passive needs balancing.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Unfair decks

*2023-02-13, version 1.04*

They need to make it more fair for facing ashiok decks cause with his ability over giving you nightmares if you have the plane that allows you to draw 2 cards sometimes it can bug the timer to where you end up not getting a turn at all. Not only that but every time I go into ranked to try and go up the ladder I end up stuck in bronze either cause they other enemy has to many creatures ready to fight me or I end up getting health taken and time stollen from a ashiok. Please fix these things it would make it more fair and a lot better if we didn’t have to worry about these things a lot.

### 1/5 — Great fun, but…

*2023-01-30, version 1.03*

I’ve been really enjoying this game and a more fast paced take on magic.

However one specific bug has made it nearly unplayable. Every few games the opponent will end their turn and suddenly it acts as if it’s their turn again. I can’t play any cards and I watch as the timer for “THEIR TURN” ticks down until suddenly…opponents turn again.

This bug entirely wastes your turn. If it’s fixed I’d easily change to a 5 star but it’s laughable how atrocious this makes competitive play right now

### 1/5 — Advanced players vs beginners, unfair leveling up system!

*2022-12-28, version 1.03*

The game leveling up system needs major improvements. I’m a big Dungeons & Dragons fan but I never played magic the gathering, so I’m a beginner. My early levels I was maybe winning 4-5 times out of 10 games on average. I was leveling up just as fast if I won or lost. My levels increased very quickly. I’m currently at 12th level and now when I play I’ll maybe win 1 game out of 10. The leveling up should be based off of wins so that everyone is at the same playing levels. I feel it’s unfair playing against advanced players when you are just a beginner. Or you could even have a rating system for players deck or cards, to separate the advanced players from the beginner players.

Also, the players that can’t afford to pay cash to get more cards or craft cards, there should be more options for those players.

Magic Spellslingers could easily be a 5 stars game with those improvements.

### 1/5 — WOTC has gone too far with this

*2022-12-10, version 1.03*

The premise of this game is great, simplified MTG on mobile, love it. However this game is PLAGUED by the biggest pay to win model to ever exist in a video game and a complete lack of balancing. To go along with a complete lack of balancing, they’ve shown they’re completely def to what is actually OP or completely worthless. They don’t listen to any feedback and I swear the only reason this game has any more than a 1-star rating is because players have deep pockets or just don’t mind being stuck in whatever the meta is. It’s really disappointing because this game has so much potential, but WOTC has turned magic into a massive cash grab because they know it’s going to completely tank soon. Utter GARBAGE.

### 1/5 — Do yourself a favor and don't download this game

*2022-12-04, version 1.02*

This isn't a game you play for fun, this is the kind of game you hate play. It's a miserable experience and progression is EXTREMELY slow. Complete 25 challenges for a single pack is terrible. And after every like 10 packs you finally get enough for a new commander. It's very p2w more so than other games I play because this game only has one mode and that's ranked real time battles. It'll put you against opponents that are way farther ahead than you and once you think you might have a decent battle they always draw the one card in their deck that could save them. All this is intentional to get you to buy more packs.

### 1/5 — Broken game

*2022-12-03, version 1.02*

This game is pathetic. It crashes every second or third match, it slows down frequently and becomes unplayable, cards even disappear from your hand. I love magic. I’ve played off and on since beta. Owned almost all the games, thrown thousands of dollars there way. But this game is not finished, it’s broken. Work out the bugs before you open the store. Very disappointed in wizards of the coast it’s clear they no longer care about the quality of there products. This games a cash grab. Try arena or one of the older ones.

### 1/5 — No space on the board

*2022-10-28, version 1.01.02*

There is only room on the battlefield to place 5 creatures. Clearly, there is ‘room’ on the Battlefield for 6 creature because 2 of the hero’s you can pick to represent you have their own creatures that attack. When these special creatures attack you can have 6 creatures on the board. If Spellslingers does not increase the number of creatures you can play out before you to 6 I will stop playing. One might ask, why not 7 creatures, why not 8 (hearthstone allows you 7 creatures in play, magic arena allows unlimited creatures just as in real life)?

Furthermore, there is no way to dismiss a creature you have other than ‘replacing’ it with a new one. If you have 4 creatures on the board (or 5) and you want to play a single creature that places 2 or more on the board (and there are several that do this) the new creature won’t play down. For example, if you have 4 (or 5) creatures on the board and you play Crush of Wurms which puts 3 Crush of Wurms on the battlefield you will only get 1 copy of Crush of Wurms.

Give me 6 creatures, at least, or I will chose to play another game.

### 1/5 — Bugs and Errors still everywhere

*2022-09-08, version 1.01.00*

I love this game overall. I’ve been playing MTG for years.
Since the first time I’ve downloaded it via IOS I’ve had no sound whatsoever. The only time there is sound is if I have my AirPods in. I’ve restarted my phone, I’ve uninstalled and re-installed multiple times. I’ve checked my output for audio etc. Nothing works.
There are also many errors occurring mid game like not being able to play any cards even with mana, not being able to attack on your turn, etc. This is extraordinarily frustrating as it is already ridiculously hard to move up ranked and those errors cost you the game.
Fix the problems and then it will be 5/5.

### 1/5 — Broken balance and terrible game breaking bugs

*2022-09-04, version 1.00.01*

There is a planeswalker (main champion that slings spells that for some reason isn’t called a “spellslinger”) named Ral. He’s so broken that he can. Do 3 mana 10 damage nuke (starting health is 22-28) he also has insane card draw and card creation and can play an attifact, discover a spell and play 2 3/3 on the very first turn with 1 mana…. They do nothing to address it even after weeks. They also didn’t do a reset from beta so you’re up against people with literally every card. I’m wasting my time with a review because it keeps getting deleted, however there are also bugs: While playing you get a random error (frequently) that causes you to not be able to see your hand. Sometimes cards you play just disappear (usually if it’s been previously countered) lol hear bugs are repeatable, explainable and frequently reported on their discord. They still exist in roughly 40% of games. Between the 70% win rate Ral decks and the 40% of games lost to a game breaking but I rate the game as a 1* only because 0* isn’t an option. Do not waste your time unless there is major patching.

### 1/5 — Could use some gameplay tweaks

*2022-08-24, version 1.00.01*

To view a card on the field you have to tap it but to view a card in your hand you have to long press. The method ought to be the same regardless of where the card is. (Preferably it should be long press and simply let go to stop reading the card.)Tapping the card brings up a full screen windowpane showing the card’s details and you have to press an X icon on the corner of the screen to dismiss. You have to do this each time you decide to read a card. It’s slow and excruciating. Furthermore.. to attack with creatures you have to drag each creature up then press on the button that says attack. But since this is Magic you can’t specify what you are attacking. So having to drag up is completely pointless. You ought to be able to just tap each creature you want to attack with. All in all simply trying to play Spellslingers is horrendously cumbersome and awkward and SLOW. It actually manages to be worse than the iOS version of Arena. They should have studied Eternal when designing this game, since Eternal is literally a ripoff of Magic but it plays much smoother than this. It truly blows my mind that they kept this in development for about three years and in all that time they didn’t even make up their mind on something as simple as whether we should tap or long press a card to full view it.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Played for about two months so and love it

*2023-11-20*

GREAT free to play game. Tons of cards and plenty of free/easy to get materials to craft cards you want. Join a clan asap and you can get materials easily.

The gameplay is fantastic and you can make the same Spellslingers/planeswalkers play a variety of decks. Matchmaking is quick and fun. The actual strategies are way more fun than other games I got into like hearthstone and you don’t end up with a hand of all lane cards or no land cards like in regular Magic, which was always insane to me that they never solved that problem but people still play it.

### 5/5 — Really Fun

*2023-07-25*

This game is awesome. The games are very quick paced and simple. I have one suggestion however, the character models in the lobby look kinda funky and weird. It’s not so much that I can’t play the game without laughing, but Nissa looks like she’s seen some things. The one that bothers me the most is Ral. He looks like he just committed a crime and is trying to act natural. These are fine though, I’m not trying to govern how you guys design your characters, but it’s just my personal opinion. Also, I don’t know how you guys add new Spellslingers, if you have a list or what, but I would like to see Tibalt as a Spellslinger. Other then these, you guys are doing great, keep up the good work.

### 5/5 — A much needed IP for Wizards

*2023-05-22*

Let’s face it magic the gathering is the best card game out there. I have delved and invested into all of them heavily. Hearthstone, pokemon, Yugioh, Magic, etc etc. The art and lore of magic the gathering along with the competitiveness and mechanics make it far superior to any other. HOWEVER (and this is a big however) as a 32 year old father and husband I don’t always have the time or money to enjoy mtg arena or fnm. So I often find myself mindlessly playing hearthstone. I’m glad it’s there it is great for what it is. But a simplified version of magic for phones fills a niche I think many will enjoy. The tutorial is a bit long prior to providing freedom which makes sense as people of all ages will be downloading this. But good job and keep up the good work Wizards. We love you.

### 5/5 — Tips For Newcomers

*2023-02-01, version 1.04*

I have played this game for 4 months now and what makes me love it very much is that It isn’t a pay to win game. No matter the level you are there isn’t restriction to getting just any card you want. The thing people need to understand is they will NEED patience, because there is items required to craft cards. You can get up to 2-3 card packs a day just playing and doing quests. If there is cards you aren’t pulling from packs but really want, you craft them. Crafting requires being in a “clan/alliance”. You request crafting items then wait 8 hours to request again. You also get crafting items from duplicate cards, once you have two of a card type it becomes “duplicate” afterwards.

The Game is difficult at times but in the end it is based on the skill and knowledge of the opponent. They might have more experience than you or they might have a better hand than you. Just breathe, it is a game and it can make me rage but I will always come back to this game. Practice, understand your cards, get use to planeswalkers play styles. You got this.

### 5/5 — It’s FUN

*2023-01-13, version 1.03*

I always thought Magic The Gathering was extremely complicated, with dozens of different mechanics and combinations to figure out, took the fun out of playing for me, but this game makes it SIMPLE. It’s fast paced and visually pleasing! The spells and monster appearances make the game worthwhile as well as simple combat. Definitely give it a go :)

### 5/5 — I’ve played mtg all my life

*2022-12-13, version 1.03*

This game is exactly what I was looking for in a phone game. I’ve played a lot of different ccg and tcg games on my phone, Hearthstone, Plants vs Zombie Heros, Marvel Snap, and normal Magic The bathing arena card games but this one has that arcade quick battle feel. It plays like normal mtg but just a little bit different and I love it

### 5/5 — Too slow to fix broken cards

*2022-11-24, version 1.02*

Easy to collect card, playing daily can allow you to get almost all cards for free without paying a dime. Main issue is that the game becomes unplayable after every expansion and they take about a month before fixing it (see Lab Assistant and Devils of last version; both cards are completely broken and make the game boring, they will be fixed only in December but were out in mid-November)

### 5/5 — Great casual version of MtG

*2022-11-14, version 1.02*

I’ve been playing MtG since 2011 and I have to say that this game is just plain fun. Sure it’s a much more casual version of the game but the art and animations are great, it’s more fair and generous than Arena, and the concept works. Hope WotC plans to support this game for a long time. Also hoping for Venser and Narset for Spellslingers :)

### 5/5 — Best thing to happen to Magic

*2022-11-11, version 1.02*

The biggest issue I’ve had about MTG (been playing since Beta) has been mana screw or clump. You can have the best deck out there and doesn’t matter if the mana gods don’t smile on you.

This is how MTG should have been made. It’s fun, easy to play if you just want a casual solo game (the AI needs a lot of work), and not a money pit (as MTG has become). In fact I have all the cards and Spellslingers only after a month of playing. Also they actively try to balance the cards with every update.

Keep up the good work. Hope this game gets regular set releases and stays around!
