## What is Making Sense Community?

The Making Sense Community is a dedicated place for curious minds to trade ideas, sharpen their thinking, follow good arguments wherever they lead, and have fun doing it.

This is not another social network. Members use their full, real names, and we do not optimize for engagement, outrage, or any of the other mechanisms that have made the existing platforms so poisonous. This is a community in a more traditional sense—one that is organized around shared interests and the working assumption that the people you are talking with are arguing in good faith.

Topics consist of current events, politics, books, spirituality, health, film, travel, as well as episodes of the Making Sense podcast and whatever else is on your mind.

The most important house rules are intellectual honesty and basic decency. Keep it civil, don’t spam or self-promote, steelman before you criticize, and don’t use AI as a replacement for your own voice. Within that, this is meant to be a genuinely good time.

Inside, you'll find:

• Sam showing up how he would in a chat with people he trusts: dropping links he’s come across, reacting to events in the news, floating ideas that aren't yet ready for an episode of the podcast.
• Member-created threads on wide-ranging topics.
• Member profiles and direct messaging, so the connections you make here don't have to stay inside a single thread.
• Notifications you control, so the community is available when you want it and quiet when you don't.
• Healthy moderation that protects the space for the community by removing anyone engaging in toxic behavior.

Come join our community of curious, sharp, good-humored people who take ideas seriously without taking themselves too seriously.

### 5/5 — Real Conversation

*2026-08-08*

This platform works. Those who write are thoughtful and honest. I find that I actually unwind when I take part in the discussion. That wasn’t the case on other platforms.

### 5/5 — Met expectations

*2026-08-08*

Pretty elevated conversations where people are a lot more willing to keep it civil.

### 5/5 — Better than Reddit

*2026-08-05*

Thank god I don’t have to visit the r/samharris subreddit ever again.

### 5/5 — Great community platform

*2026-08-01*

Fantastic place and discussion platform for likeminded people, who do not afraid to discuss difficult issues, even if they happen to be on the opposite side of the problem.

### 5/5 — The Waking Up app & this one 🫶

*2026-07-20*

Great topics, thoughtfully discussed in a safe setting. Yes please 😊.

### 3/5 — Still social media

*2026-07-18*

You just can’t take the social media out of social media. All the same issues with taking up your time, wanting to defend against erroneous replies are still there. It’s a feature of these virtual meeting spaces not a bug.

### 5/5 — Breath of fresh air

*2026-07-12*

Desperately needed in our time. People really committed to intelligent, nuanced, respectful debate and conversation on a variety of viewpoints.
This app makes complete sense. It should become the new face of social media for the sake of mankind.

### 5/5 — Really enjoying it

Functional, interesting, adult social media

### 5/5 — So far, so good

*2026-07-06*

Just getting into the swing of things on this app. Discussions are thought- provoking and civil. I’ve just now posted a couple of items - I’ll now see how they float or sink …

### 5/5 — A great community and app

*2026-07-05*

I think there are around 30,000 people in the community now. All following simple rules of communication with no abuse. It’s like the early internet. Informative, thoughtful discussion of great and diverse topics. Love it.
