## What is Malinois Device Anti?

Malinois is an anti-tampering app that protects your unattended device. Leave it on your desk, in a gym locker, in a hotel room, or on a café table — armed and ready. Malinois triggers the moment it detects movement, a screen touch, or a plug-in/unplug event, and immediately writes a time-stamped record to the Event Log. Photo and video evidence is captured and logged on the spot.

Your iPhone will either be in the same state you left it, or you'll have a record showing it wasn't.

HOW IT WORKS
Set a Malinois PIN, ARM, and set the device down. After a short grace period the device calibrates its sensors and the screen goes dark. On battery it goes fully black and the phone looks off; plugged in, the camera stays ready, so the screen is dimmed and iOS shows its recording indicator for the whole session — a requirement no app can switch off. Disarm anytime by pressing and holding the screen and entering your Malinois PIN.

PRIVATE BY DESIGN
Malinois has no account, no server, no analytics, and no third-party tracking. It asks for the Camera when you first arm, and for the Microphone only if you turn on Sound or clip audio; the evidence stays on your device and in your own private iCloud — the developer can't see any of it. ### 1.3.1 — 2026-09-07

A maintenance release: small fixes, most of them to how faithfully the record reflects what happened.

Cancelling the countdown now leaves a trace. Backing out of arming before the watch went live needed no PIN and left nothing in the log. It is now recorded, and on Pro your other devices get the same alert a disarm sends. If the app is force-quit during the countdown, the next launch records that too. And an interruption in the first seconds after arming, while the app is still settling, is now recorded and recovered like any other.

Guided Access and the side button. With the Side Button option on in Guided Access (its default; Apple's guides still call it Sleep/Wake), one press locks the screen and pauses monitoring until you unlock. The arming instructions and the setup card now tell you to turn that option off. If it happens anyway, the log says the device was locked while armed rather than "sent to the background", and a charger plugged in or pulled while the screen was locked trips the Power tripwire the moment the app comes back.

The Sound tripwire keeps listening. It no longer pauses for a clip that records no audio, and it hears from the instant calibration ends instead of a second and a half later.

Malinois tells you when something is wrong on its side. If the event log could not be read at launch, it is set aside as a backup and Home says so, instead of showing an empty log. If the crash-safe journal cannot be written, Home says so. If you asked for audio in clips and the microphone could not be attached, you are told at arm time, before you walk away.

Also in this release: a disarm during a capture leaves the camera off; the wrong-PIN lockout holds even if the device's keychain refuses to save it; an automatic re-arm after an interruption is no longer refused when the clock has been set back; every timer keeps running while a finger is on the screen; the status bar stays hidden while recording (iOS shows its own camera and microphone indicator regardless); the cross-device alerts switch saves the moment you flip it; Home's notifications reminder appears only once another of your devices has actually sent something; a spree of arm-and-cancel taps leaves one record, not one per tap; and the "Guided Access was on when you last disarmed" notice is gone.

Early-Access: Malinois Pro is free for everyone who installs now - permanently. If Pro ever becomes a paid unlock, that will apply to new installs only; Early-Access installs keep everything. Buying Pro now adds nothing; it's simply a way to support the project.

When Malinois is disarmed on one of your devices, your other Apple devices now get a notification - so a disarm you didn't do reaches you the moment it happens. (Pro)

Guided Access (the setup Malinois is built for) is now required to arm by default, for existing installs as well as new ones. When you just want to test, the arming screen lets you skip it for a single arm, and that choice is logged like everything else; turn the requirement off for good in Settings.

Clearer records when monitoring is interrupted. If the device restarts or the app is closed while it's armed, the Event Log now says which. If a photo or clip couldn't be captured, the record says why and takes one more try when the camera comes back.

Sturdier evidence. Every event is written through to storage the instant it's detected, so a sudden loss of power can't erase a record that was just made.

Fewer prompts, and later. Malinois no longer asks for anything when it first opens. The camera is asked for the first time you arm; the microphone only if you turn on the Sound tripwire or "Record audio in clips" (clips are video only until you do); notifications only on a device that would receive cross-device alerts. In Settings the sections are now "Tripwires" and "Tripwire Response". The camera now captures from the front unless the Vision tripwire is on; the rear camera is for a phone lying face down with Vision watching the room, and even then a touch on the screen captures from the front, because a screen being touched is facing whoever touches it. A capture cut short by your own disarm no longer reads as a camera failure.

Fixes a hang when opening the Event Log with Face ID under Guided Access.  iOS defers the Face ID prompt there, so the PIN pad now appears immediately instead, and Face ID offers again when Guided Access ends.

### 1.2 — 2026-08-31

Vision tripwire (Pro): while the phone is charging, the camera watches its own view and trips on movement — catching an approach before anyone touches it. Evidence is only recorded once something trips; nothing is stored while it's just watching.

Your evidence comes back: Malinois can restore your event log from your private iCloud after a reinstall, and the arm/disarm history is backed up alongside the tamper evidence. The details around the evidence — when, which tripwire, which device — are encrypted in iCloud with your own keys rather than stored in the clear.

Also new:
• Face ID unlock (optional): open the Event Log and Test Sensors with a glance. Settings, disarming, and changing the PIN always require the PIN — a face can be presented; a PIN has to be given.
• Sustained tampering folds into a single log entry with a running count, so the log stays readable during an incident.
• The Event Log shows a sync banner while events are still waiting to reach iCloud, and arm/disarm entries show whether they made it.
• If you require Guided Access to arm, the arming screen can lift that requirement for one arm only — it's logged, and your setting stays on.
• The Home screen warns when something would keep protection from working: a denied permission, a blocked siren output, a capture problem.
• Extensive reliability and security hardening throughout, from multiple rounds of external security review — the PIN pathway, iCloud sync, evidence capture, and alarm behavior all fail safer and louder.

The tripwire formerly called "Movement" is now "Device motion", and the Sound tripwire is named consistently everywhere.
