Teaching everything primarily in hiragana makes reading real Japanese more difficult, because Japanese is normally written using a combination of kanji, hiragana, and katakana. A simple improvement would be to replace appropriate hiragana words with their standard kanji and provide furigana above the kanji for learners who still need help with pronunciation. This would allow users to learn how Japanese is actually written while still being able to read unfamiliar kanji. Without enough kanji exposure, I feel like I’m learning to read Japanese in a way that doesn’t reflect what I actually encounter in Japan. Adding kanji with furigana would make the app significantly more useful for serious Japanese learners. ### 4/5 — Love to Vietnamese! *2026-07-30, version 8.80.1* I normally never write a review for an app, but I am especially inspired today to express my appreciation for this app. I have always wanted to improve my Vietnamese (my family speaks)but have always found it so difficult across various apps because of different pronunciations and the exaggerated formality of the language. As a speaker seeking to increase her vocabulary outside of a household setting, I commend your dedication to the language and the curriculum to actually teaching someone a language with the goal to put it to real world use with REAL conversation. My only complaint in the way the app is formatted. I think your mission is amazing but if the app was a little easier to navigate take Duolingo as inspiration maybe? Also vocabulary wise I am already familiar with many words as is but would love to add a unit one vocab word to a bigger vocab flash card list with more advanced words. I always wanted to try it, and now that we live in an age of smartphones where we can connect our apps to our library cards, this really is a great gift. I am one of those who completely lost faith in Duolingo once I realized that its business model relied on drip feeding people the feeling of education for as long as possible to keep getting their money rather than actually educating them. I am thrilled that this app exists, and I am thrilled that the institution of the library still exists in these dark times for public infrastructure so I need to give all of that prepuce before I register my one complaint: I have just started a French course and want to take advantage of the autoplay feature while I get ready in the morning, drive my car, etc. but unpredictably it will jump at seemingly random points in seemingly random exercises, skipping to the next. I don't want to miss any content because it was surely laid out with the repetitions by design. But I also don't want to have to sit beside it like a babysitter to advance slide after slide when there are so many opportunities throughout the day to let it just play to me. This one but being ironed out would make the app perfect for me. ### 3/5 — Meh *2026-06-06, version 8.78.0* I have their paid subscription but am looking for alternatives to Duolingo because their predatory business model of constantly pushing PAID users to buy points for real money to buy your way through the levels really ruins the joy of learning a language for me. However, there seems to be no app that does it all perfectly. I find this app from the sample content to be very “dry” but two definite pluses are how the app explains WHY a phrase is said a certain way - it gives insight in to the literal meaning of a phrase- and in addition to speaking with a quality voice, it also shows the phonetic spelling to help you understand how to pronounce a word better. What I really don’t like is the push to sign up for an account- free or not- especially when it only lets me see a few basic words I already know. I want to know what other lessons and activities are contained in this app before even signing up; I have ZERO interest in signing up for yet another subscription trial. I want to know exactly what the content is ahead of time and THEN if it has value I will pay for it. ### 3/5 — Paywall *2026-06-01, version 8.77.0* It seems like a rather good app if you have the money, but you can only try out the first unit before having to get a subscription. The actual walking process is rather alright, although it can be difficult to understand how to mimic what it’s telling you to without knowing how to move your mouth. For example, making the throaty Dutch sounds, or how to move your tongue to make certain sounds in Spanish, etc. ### 2/5 — Library account *2026-05-24, version 8.77.0* Signing up with my library card still is a difficult procedure. I’m still not able to after googling and reading how to. ### 3/5 — App is fine but loading time is ridiculous and so slow *2026-05-20, version 8.77.0* Slow ### 4/5 — “How old are you” is incorrect in Japanese *2026-03-18, version 8.69.0* I’m learning Japanese and the app taught me to say that “お歳は？ (otoshi wa)” is the correct way to ask how old are you. However, native speakers say that’s unnatural. The natural and polite way to ask is actually おいくつですか？ (oikutsu desu ka) and the informal way to say it would’ve been “何歳ですか” (nansai desu ka) so I’m kinda disappointed that Mango didn’t catch that ### 5/5 — Can be improved *2026-03-05, version 8.69.0* What if there were multiple voices/accents/dialects for each vocab/phrase/etc., for which can be done via feeding vocal training data to an AI model optimizing for the most realistic (or most likely to encounter) voices/accents/dialects in a particular region (e.g., Male British accent in London region speaking English, Female American voice in Midwest USA region speaking English, Female Chinese voice in Shanghai China region speaking Mandarin, etc.)? ### 5/5 — Wonderful *2026-02-28, version 8.69.0* Just great, the explanations are clear and there are plenty of examples ### 5/5 — WAYYYYY better than Duolingo! *2026-02-27, version 8.69.0* Discovered Mango through my library membership. It explains things in much detail and doesn't distract you with annoying cartoon characters and constant sales pitches like Duolingo. It offers some interestingn language choices like Icelandic (if they could add Luxembourgish, that would be awesome!!!) as well as fun things like Shakespearean Insults and Pirate. ### 5/5 — I love learning on mango languages! *2026-02-27, version 8.68.0* Ive tryed Duolingo before but it just has too many adds and it’s to much games. Mango also teaches cultural slides and grammar slides. Little did I know that they only have one unit for Vietnamese, and it was very much focused on tourist interactions (while also being way too advanced for a tourist lol)… and it definitely didn’t have any units with southern Vietnamese language used. One day it just started getting stuck at the loading screen. I deleted the app and got it back but still its stuck on the M (main loading screen) and i cant move past that, log or sign in, nothing. Ive never seen anything like it and have no idea what the solution is. I hope the mango team will look into solving this soon, im extremely disappointed. ### 1/5 — Can’t cancel from the app *2026-02-27* We can subscribe from the app, no problem, but we it comes to cancel we have to use their site, you know just to make it a bit harder to do so. Please add an app-wide dark mode. One of the languages I’m learning is Japanese, I’d really like to see more Kanji being used in the lessons. Kanji is as important to Japanese as Hanzi (Chinese characters) is for Chinese. Mango manages to use Hanzi for Chinese immediately. It doesn’t use ai (to my knowledge), it’s basically free, and it has lessons that actually work in tons of languages! My only criticism is that you should add chapters on how to learn the different writing systems, and also to maybe add Esperanto. There is lot of content that is very usable and relevant in real life situations. The apps is made so that you will remember the sentences because of the repetition. I like a lot how it makes you repeat few words and then few words with grammar and the sentence itself. The grammar notes are also super useful. I love also how it’s focused on practicing speaking always.
