### 4/5 — Demande d'option

*2025-05-13*

Bonjour superbe application ,mais si on pouvais ecrire directement sur l'epub ça serait genial🥰

### 3/5 — Workable but not entirely good

*2024-06-29*

It takes a bit to get it to just simply read a book, but on the upside it handles custom fonts, and even RIBBI, right and with ease.

Big minus is that the page layout in continuous scroll cannot be changed. On an iPhone SE, the default margin is *way* too big, making for *very* short lines.

### 4/5 — Good ePub reader .. but

*2024-01-07*

It had a problem with ePub 3 file

Also all the books from Hindawi.org have an issue in MapleRead, but work well on other ebook apps.

**Developer response:** ◾️ Jan 24, 2024: Please update to version 5.3. Those Arabic books should work well with the bug fix.

◾️ Jan 15, 2024: Thank you for providing a concrete website, Hindawi.org, with lots of such EPUB test cases. (More interactive email correspondence is still preferred.) Apparently, hindawi.org is an Arabic website, and all books there are in Arabic. Arabic is written from right-to-left (rtl) instead of left-to-right (ltr) like English. It turns out that the app is indeed not well-tested for rtl languages in all reading views. However, it still works reasonably well in Modern Scroll view. Furthermore, you may turn off all switches under "Apply Theme Colors", if you don't want to override publisher's colors.

◾️ Dec 29, 2023: EPUB 3 is a very complex standard. The app may have bugs, or the books may not be fully compliant. Please try out some bundled EPUB 3 books from Sample Books. You are welcome to send us the books in question to help resolve this issue. Thanks.

### 3/5 — Nice book reader doesn't support split view for ipad

*2024-01-01*

A really nice app for reading epub just cannot use notes side by side and have limited annotation capabilities. Just text highlight...no underline strikethrough.
Hope the developers soon update the app for ipad

**Developer response:** As stated in App Store description, CX is CE with some limitation. Split-view multitasking is one such limitation of CX, while CE and SE have no such limitation.

### 3/5 — Too cumbersome to side load from Files.

*2023-12-09*

My beloved Marvin app is not in the App Store anymore, so I am searching for a replacement for the day when the iOS makes it not run anymore. I require an app which will let me sideload epubs from downloaded files, sort by author (and not show all the books till I tap!), and allow me to change (or add) covers.

This one claims to do all three, but requires moving epubs to a separate folder? Other apps are not so finicky, and this cumbersome point of friction means I'm going to move on. I'll leave it on my phone, but until I can load epubs from the app, or by telling Files to download to the app, I don't think I'll use it. Pity.

**Developer response:** Apparently you're a fan of a long-abandoned app, and I can sympathize with your dissatisfaction with the Apple Store policy. Your stated requirement is actually quite basic, and has been addressed by the app since day one. But we have no idea of what you mean by "moving epubs to a separate folder". Please read the rather extensive in-app and online help too, especially on the topic of importing books. Actually, we think you're smart enough to figure it out, as long as you don't insist that they all have to be done exactly the old way you're used to. Cheers.

### 4/5 — great epub read app and some advice

*2023-06-28*

in classic book model，there is a white margin at the page when I choose colored theme. I wonder to know if the theme color or background could cover the full page in classic book model，not just the text part.
I really like the app, and thanks for what you do for it.

**Developer response:** Thanks. This issue will be addressed in a future release in this quarter.

### 4/5 — everything’s almost perfect

*2022-02-21*

almost perfect reader:
just a couple of notes:
1. cannot set page margins (left, right, top, bottom) for scrolling mode (why so? too much screen space is wasting :) ).
2. footer and header are not customizable. also: if you set footer center, it shows percentage, and if default, it shows pages and chapter. I would like to see chapter and percent, for example :)
3. (yeah, remembered third. optional) it can show publisher style (awesome!) but(!) it doesn’t use publisher’s colors (like header color or text color if they’re non-standard). it’s not necessary (you can set your theme), but useful :)

**Developer response:** Regarding #3 (EPUB), open Theme/Brightness menu, tap "Apply Theme Colors" and turn off "Override Text Color", "Override Heading Color", "Override Link Color".

### 2/5 — Demo too limited

*2021-10-02*

I’d want to be able to load a few books of my own to test, even if it’s only one at a time. Can’t commit to buying every book reader until I find the one I like best.

**Developer response:** Understood your concern. You can now import (load), open and read 3 books (as of v4.2) of your own to completely test out our EPUB reader, in addition to importing an unlimited number of books in many ways.

### 4/5 — Great, but one small thing...

*2019-04-05*

I would buy the full version of this app to do all my reading of PDFs and ebooks if one thing changed. I know it’s silly, but in the classic book view in landscape, it still shows the two columns of text as one page. I want it to show to facing pages, one for each column of text, just like a real book (like the original iBooks). Once that feature arrives, I’ll purchase the SE version and never look back.

### 5/5 — Awesome!

*2019-02-06, version 3.0.4*

Don’t know why, books just look better in this app than other readers, especially on my iPad. It’s packed with features yet simple to use.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Just use Books.

*2026-05-26*

Forces you to pay if you import more than 5 books. Just use Books unless you really need OPDS support.

**Developer response:** This is not a fair comment. For the real story, please read the in-app OPDS entry "CX is CE with some limitation".

### 1/5 — Opening of a local file on ipad pro

*2025-11-01*

Please how is it possible to open a local file on my ipad pro? Also would it be possible to have the list of all the possible formats accepted? For instance, is azw3 ok? Thank you in advance.

**Developer response:** As shown on the App Store description pages, MapleRead CX and CE supports ePub, while SE supports ePub and PDF. No azw3 or any other format support is mentioned. As long as the ePub file is not DRM'ed, the app can import it.

### 1/5 — Free ain’t free

*2023-06-22*

A 3 book limit on importing local files makes this whole thing worthless, regardless of the nice features it may have.

### 1/5 — Unethical, stay away from this app

*2021-12-11, version 4.1*

There used to be a limit on how many books i can read (may be 3?). Now I am unable to open the only 2 books i have in this app! Haha unbelievable! Such a stupid decision! I was really considering purchasing the app but not anymore. I'll look elsewhere. Idk how they attract new customers with such attitude.
By the way, they offer you to send the books to another app but there's a catch. You lose all annotations you made by doing so. So either you pay and purchase their app or you lose all highlights. 5 dollars for the full app isn't much but you don't deserve any penny.

**Developer response:** You can now import, open and read 3 books (as of v4.2) of your own to completely test out our EPUB reader, in addition to importing an unlimited number of books in many ways.

Why were you so angry in an unproportional way? Perhaps bad-mouthing this app per se somehow pleased you. Oh well, find another app you like and be calm and happy!

### 1/5 — Dev disabled ability to read my books

*2021-06-27*

Sometime in the last month the app was updated and all the books I had previously imported into the app are now unable to be read unless I pay to upgrade. So now I’ve lost all my notations/bookmarks etc. shady business.

**Developer response:** Don’t worry. No user data is lost. You can now backup all your notes, highlights, bookmarks, books and preferences in CX with v4.0.1 for free, and restore them also in CE and SE.

### 1/5 — Please add 🇮🇹 ITALIAN LANGUAGE

*2018-09-06, version 2.1.1*

Please add Italian Language!!!🇮🇹

### 2/5 — Disappointing

*2026-05-10*

poor functionality and a pain to "import" and organize your books.

**Developer response:** Can you be more specific as to what features you think are missing, and how books should be imported other than the half a dozen existing methods to do so? Thanks.

### 2/5 — Good but…books on shelf too small on iPad mini

*2025-06-25*

I am unable to read the titles on the the iPad mini as the books are way too small and there are not alterable and magnifying each one is a pain. If I was able to customise the books and shelf size I would buy the paid version.

The amount of customisation when reading the books is wonderful.

Note you are only able to read 5 books in this trial version.

### 2/5 — Devs are snippy.

*2023-12-11*

Less cumbersome to get the side loading than I'd thought (the phrasing was throwing me), but very much do not want to give money to insulting responses. Blighted shame.

Actually, we think you're smart enough to figure it out, as long as you don't insist that they all have to be done exactly the old way you're used to. Cheers.

### 2/5 — Can’t use two columns display

*2023-03-27*

Even in landscape mode. This is not effective. Unable to read my comic books

**Developer response:** EPUB two column layout only works for text. It can't break an image in a comic book into two columns.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Leitor Maple

*2024-04-16*

Excelente leitor com várias funções...maravilhoso

### 5/5 — Great app

*2023-10-01*

MapleRead is the best reader app I’ve ever used. It loads with tons of features. To name a few: audio-book, beautiful cover view, adjustable UI text size, highly customizable, great library management, etc.

I bought MapleRead SE without any hesitation.

### 5/5 — Unique & I recommend it

*2023-07-28*

"Gentium Book Classic" is a gorgeous font! And this app offers the ability to add custom fonts. So satisfied that I purchased the full version SE.

### 5/5 — Really good app

*2023-06-15*

This is one of the best readers on IOS. Not sure why the low reviews. It has a lot of great features and the developer continues to improve it. Will be getting one of the premium versions shortly.

### 5/5 — Auto hyphenation not working … (SOLVED!)

*2023-02-20*

… for books in Russian. It looks like your app is the only one that does not support it. (Marvin supports it, i2Reader supports it, Pocketbook supports it, even Apple’s Books supports it.)

P.S. Now it’s working - after the developers’ prompt response!

**Developer response:** See What's New of version 4.7

### 5/5 — Awesome app!

*2022-08-03*

Works as promised! Pleasantly surprised!

### 5/5 — Hidden Gem

*2020-10-20*

Honestly, it’s a very good ebook reader, the dev has been working hard on it. There are some little annoying things here and there but still a really solid app.

I suggest to change the color of the upper icon bar when you tap on the screen from yellow on semi opaque white to something darker on a solid color to make it easier on the eyes.

### 5/5 — Very good reader

*2020-09-09, version 3.5.2*

great reader with good ability to interact with the cloud and the different repositories. the fact that it does not have an Italian version is completely irrelevant, because, whether we like it or not, English is the international language.

### 5/5 — Great ePub Reader!

*2019-04-16*

Being an avid reader, I routinely look for newer and better software to enhance the experience, but I keep coming back to Maple. Using Calibre’s opds server function, the link up between my laptop where the ebooks arrive and my phone where the ebooks are read is smooth and fast. There are enough options for font, size, layout, background, overall look of the app, how pages are turned, etc. to please anyone and the controls for them are quick and easy. There are lots of options for sorting and viewing multiple books so I can quickly find whatever I want from 3000+ titles. Navigation within books is easy and you can set bookmarks. Good, responsive support from the developer. Both thumbs up!

### 5/5 — Feature-rich and beautiful

*2019-02-06*

Best ePub reader app
