### 5/5 — Great apps

*2025-08-06*

What a surprise!! After using several tracking apps, MapOut provides a wonderful, easy to read maps and basic functions which are finally the most valuable and used.
Great job

### 5/5 — Best map app

*2025-07-31, version 3.4.13*

I have loved using MapOut for a lot of bikepacking & hiking trips. Its interface is way nicer than the other apps people show me their routes in.

### 5/5 — Great for hiking, could be better for cycling

*2025-07-18*

I always use MapOut for planning for hiking routes. It's great at showing all the hiking trails and the recommended hiking routes. Its elevation estimation is quite accurate. I sometimes consult books and other sources for hiking route suggestions and it's a breeze to create a tour in MapOut. A one-time purchase is so much better than other subscription-based apps since I only hike ~20 times per year.

Using MapOut for cycling is a bit of a worse experience. Well for one road cyclists need paved roads, gravel cyclists can tolerate some unpaved roads, but I couldn't find a way for MapOut to differentiate these. That's why I had an unpleasant experience of planning a tour in advance, and then when I arrive there on a road bike I find it's only an unpaved trail. Also MapOut doesn't have turn-by-turn navigation or the ability to create a cue sheet. I can get rid of my cycling computer if you add navigation on the Apple Watch.

### 5/5 — Great App!

*2025-07-14*

The UX, especially menu for creating the tours could be better and easier to use, but it’s a great app. A perfect match with WorkOutDoors - create a tour here and share to WorkOutDoors to navigate on the watch. Thanks!

### 5/5 — Only app I use for hiking!

*2025-07-09*

Why pay for pointless subscriptions like AllTrails for features you don’t even need and a glitchy, clunky app? I love that you buy this one time and it just has the functionality you need, with quick loading and easy area downloads. Used this app exclusively to navigate the sawtooth wilderness loop, glacier north circle, and Uinta Highline trails, as well as numerous shorter trips and day hikes. Truly excellent app.

### 5/5 — Incredible for cycle touring

*2025-07-05*

While it takes some time to learn all the controls, this app makes my unplanned cycle tours so much easier! I draw routes into the app and export to the Coros app and then to my cycle computer. If I had one request, it would be to search for places by their icon. For example, search for water (water droplet) or camping sites (tent icon).

### 5/5 — Best program ever

*2025-05-27*

Worth getting an iPhone for. Beautiful, readable maps. Visually superior to anything since the days of printed maps. Can be used offline. Indispensable when cell phone service is weak. Better than pricey subscription services or free ad-supported maps.

Amazing!

### 5/5 — Great little app

*2025-05-22, version 3.4.12*

Best app investment in a long time. This just works and is simple to use. Good to have such a good alternative to subscription based map services

### 5/5 — Great App!

*2025-05-09*

Excellent bang for buck. Use for 4x4 and walking. Good features, however, is a learning curve to utilise all features.
Oh. Once only purchase is a bonus.

### 5/5 — Well Done

*2025-04-25*

Lightweight, simple, and easy to use.

### 5/5 — Best off line map app

*2025-04-25, version 3.4.12*

Have been using this app for over 6x years and is still the best off line map app that I have found to use for gravel riding and tramping. Easy to use, just mark out your route send to Garmin connect then add it to your Garmin devices so you can follow routes off line. Been brilliant for over sea tours. The map trails are pretty accurate too. I have try a lot of other apps to see what they offer, but I still come back to this one.

### 5/5 — Amazing off-grid mapping app!

*2025-03-21, version 3.4.12*

MapOut is certainly one of the best mapping apps out there. I recommend it to all of my friends. If I were and android person, I would buy an iPhone just to get MapOut - it is that good. I’ve been using it for years, and use it every day because we adventure all the time.

Best features? You can draw a route off line by dragging your finger. This feature works well, and you can choose different ways to route (straight line, bike, walk, etc). Also, you can measure along a route. Just highlight the route and it will show distance between point a and b ALONG the route. I haven’t seen other apps that can do this. Another great feature is the elevation profile. Again, you can set a point A and B and get an elevation profile along the tour… with total ascent remaining. This is great for when you’re tired and want to know how much more uphill to the top. It is always very accurate. Also, a fantastic way to compare two routes if you’re looking for the easiest one.

Maps are clear and easy to read. Tiles can be downloaded ahead of time so you can go off grid. Plotting points is easy, and you can share tracks quickly - even to your Garmin offline! I do that by highlighting the track, clicking the share sheet, then sharing the track to Garmin Explore app. Once the device syncs, I can have a new course on the Garmin. This is SO useful because plans change and when you’re offline, it would be impossible without this app. Also, bike (green) and walking (pink) routes are easy to see, meaning you can actually draw better quality routes than you would with Strava and definitely better than Google.

I have written a companion app in Shortcuts.app which takes any coordinates from your clipboard and makes a waypoint in MapOut. This is how I get coordinates from Google maps (satellite view) into MapOut. If I had one wish for MapOut, it would be to have satellite view. Even if that required being online (and caching tiles for offline), it would be super.

### 5/5 — One of the best map apps available

*2025-02-21*

Been using MapOut for a few years now and just love it. It’s my go to for so many things. Walking/hiking/bikepacking and even motorcycling on road or offroad I make so much use of this. Always works, consistently stable, easy to read and contains all the information you need. Rarely if ever have an issue. Although it’s not intended to be a navigation tool it’s so easy to just load a GPX file and simply follow the map.

Now if it could only do Apple CarPlay too then that would be awesome.

Hope this app is around for a long time yet !

### 5/5 — Best route planning app for mtb

*2025-01-16, version 3.4.12*

I use several route planning/tracking apps and each has its own signature features and benefits that others don’t have, but Map Out is the best overall by a long shot

### 5/5 — Stabiles Leichtgewicht mit allem was es braucht

*2025-01-14*

### 5/5 — Perfect tracker

*2025-01-03*

I use this app for more than five years tracking all my hikes and road trips all around this globe. Never failed me. A simple and reliable tool.

### 5/5 — Perfect for curating your collection of tracks and waymarks

*2024-12-31*

So useful to see a base map overlayed with my own collection of tracks and waymarks. It makes combining sections of different trails into a DIY multi day trip easy. Great tool for hikers and bike packers and kayakers.

### 5/5 — Perfect

*2024-12-19, version 3.4.12*

I’ve tried several GPS apps over the last 15 years for bike, hike, backpacking and backcountry snowboarding and this is the best designed app by far!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work, map won’t load if you zoom in too far

*2025-03-27, version 3.4.12*

Not only does this app have a horrible user interface, you can only zoom into the map so far. It’s too zoomed out to make a route, even if you think you’re using the tool incorrectly there’s no instructions. I found a YouTube video but the sound doesn’t work, it doesn’t show any type of trail, even if you wanted to create your own trail, 1: there no where to save it, and 2: it’s so zoomed out that your just making a random path on a mountain. It’s completely useless😅 you may as well toss 5 bucks down your toilet, it’s a complete scam. Kind of smart on their part, good way to make a quick buck by scamming people.

### 1/5 — Useless

*2022-07-24, version 3.4.10*

No voice guidance.
They never respond to enquiry emails which begs the question why they have an enquiry email address at all !

### 1/5 — Unstable & incomplete

*2018-05-24, version 3.1.5*

- Crashes during routine operations
- Doesn't recognise Australian roads (with full map data downloaded)

Don't need an app to plan a straight line.

### 1/5 — Very disappointing experience - I'll stick to Strava

*2017-06-22, version 3.1.1*

This app does not perform as seen in the demo :
zoom in quickly goes to a screen with grey squares which seem to be there to download a sector of the map
Map drawing appears to draw route exactly where you drag your finger - even if there are no roads or paths there. What possible use is that?
Does not track a route actully ridden - in my example the route was an out and back - data only shows one way.

Lert me say that I am prepared to be told that I am not using app properly but in that case the demo/user guide needs work. As things stand I woyuld really like my money back. I'll stick to Strava

### 2/5 — Suddenly lost all maps

*2021-06-22, version 3.4.8*

App was locked up, failing to download maps. Had to delete and reload. This meant that all of my maps and routes were lost. Still does not download maps for me, now a useless app!

### 2/5 — Mapout : Merveilleux

*2016-09-12*

### 2/5 — Difficult to use and missing features

*2016-01-19, version 2.4.3*

Downloaded this while looking for openstreetmaps compatible apps. There are some awkward UI issues, like how it doesn't automatically download lower levels without explicitly requesting them, or how I can't search for places that I haven't downloaded, even when I have cell service. It lacks satellite views which is a must for some cell/wifi-capable outdoor areas. Also, deleting downloaded data is an all-or-nothing deal.

Overall, I don't see myself using this very much.

### 3/5 — SPLITSCREEN !!!

*2023-03-26*

How much longer do we have to wait for split screen for ipad users, come on guys get on with it please.

This is one of the few map apps that doesn’t do splitscreen, this function would make it so much more useful and desirable for us 4wdrivers. Developers ,PLEASE CONSIDER.

### 3/5 — Decent app

*2013-12-05, version 2.1*

Decent app, good detailing and till view is more useful than I originally thought it would be. Huge downside: developers please add the ability to tag and label locations for future reference.

### 4/5 — Great app. Needs Watch support

*2024-05-30*

This app does amazing stuff. I finally purchased it after friends described it. My only gripe is that it doesn’t support the Apple Watch. Am I the only one who thinks this would be terrific? A tap on the wrist when approaching a waypoint or junction. Or when you wander off the route. Or when your heart rate exceeds a set point. How far to the top of the hill? How steep is this trail I am hiking? So much info to be had without having to hold your phone in your hand.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — The best

*2026-03-21, version 3.4.13*

This app got me through a year and a half of motorcycling through Latin America. I was recommended it by a bicyclist on a similar trip, and now I recommend it to everyone I can!

### 5/5 — Intuitive, pretty and powerful app

*2026-02-06*

I love that it takes one minute to draw a route and get the stats. I also love how easy it is to email a route directly into someone else’s map (ideal for friends). Best value purchase I think I’ve ever made, I’ve gotten hundreds of hours of use out of it. I mark adventures that are done in green, to-do in red, and at a glance I can see how much of the landscape I’ve explored.

### 5/5 — MapOUT

*2026-02-01, version 3.4.13*

Map out doesn’t drain the battery rapidly like other navigation programs awesome app

### 5/5 — Best mapping app

*2025-10-19, version 3.4.13*

I am so happy to have purchased this app. It is the most perfect hiking/biking mapping app i’ve found. No subscriptions. Great Offline support. It has everything you need and nothing you don’t.

### 5/5 — Great app

*2025-10-18, version 3.4.13*

This is just what I was looking for, planning scout hikes is so much easier and encourages the kids to use navigation on paper maps.

### 5/5 — Eigentlich 5 Sterne…

*2025-10-02*

### 5/5 — Goto app

*2025-08-31*

I love this app… it’s my goto route planning software as it is so intuitive to use. I mainly use it to plan bicycle routes and to some extent motorcycle routes. I would love to see a car/motorcycle route option that would keep me on the main roads rather than divert me on to side roads.

Thanks again for a great product.

### 5/5 — Love this app

*2025-08-24*

This is definitely the best app I have used for creating routes and following routes when walking or cycling.
Also I can import and export GPX files which many apps are restrictive.
I just love it.

### 5/5 — Great app!

*2025-08-19, version 3.4.13*

Great app for building hiking, biking or off-road motorcycle routes. Intuitive and easy to learn. Love it!
