## What is Maptrails?

Maptrails is a modern map browser that packs an amazing experience for hiking, hunting, orienteering, or just enjoying your time outdoors. Only Maptrails offers full featured apps for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Mac.

The app comes preconfigured with a large selection of built-in maps in topographic, nautical, and aerial imagery styles. Save places as map markers that sync between your devices over iCloud. It is easy and fun to measure distances and draw paths on the map, or use Look Around to see street level imagery at any address.

Maptrails Pro one-time purchase unlocks a professional grade feature set. Add your own maps and data layers from standard APIs, and bring in GeoJSON, GPX, IMG, KML or Shapefile data. You can even draw notes directly on the map using touch or pencil!

Maptrails makes it easy to plan your upcoming hike by letting you download map tiles for offline use, view up-to-date weather forecasts, or draw tracks on the map and save them to GPX files. During your hike, record the route to a GPX track or workout in Health app, and graph out its speed and altitude data.

For hunters, integration with Oma Riista lets you import hunting areas using area code. Share your current GPS location with a private group of other Maptrails users.

Build your own dog tracker by installing separate Beacon app to another device and pairing it with Maptrails. Its position can then be tracked on the map in Maptrails.

This seems really good, but it would be nice if the GPX track display could be made larger in separate window with more detail. Otherwise really good especially for the low price.

I use Maptrails to record daily hikes in the forest with my dog. The Pro version is a great value. Features I like: choice of offline maps with multiple saved areas, smooth map rotation, statistics with speed and elevation graphs, map marker photos, Apple Health integration, Mac app.

There are lots of detailed, open data, mapping apps but most have terrible UI and this one is really slick. One minor point: Could benefit from a little more documentation around customer layers: some UK Ordnance Survey WMTS and WFS sources I use fine with QGIS didn't work but it wasn't clear exactly which URL endpoint was expected and no examples are provided.

I was looking for an app to replace Gaia GPS, due to concerns about their privacy practices after they joined Outside… and was really pleased to find this nice suite of apps by an indie developer who really gets the privacy issue!  It has a nice, consistent interface across iPhone, iPad and Mac and I can drop GPX files into the Kartasto folder in iCloud and my data become instantly available on all my devices. But be warned, it’s primarily an app for viewing your waypoints and tracks on a map and has only limited navigation features.

I love the concept behind Kartasto, and on iOS it's pretty good. 

Unfortunately the macOS app performs so poorly as to be unusable on my 2020 Intel MacBook Pro. Just sitting idle it's taking > 50% of my CPU, and it's impossibly sluggish when trying to interact with it.

**Developer response:** You’re right. Performance of Catalyst apps, especially on Macs that are not Apple Silicon based, is quite bad at the moment. There’s really not much that can be done about that. I would hope future macOS updates to improve this but not sure if that will happen.

At the moment the situation is this: It is quite easy to build a Catalyst version of Kartasto for Mac, and it does run quite well on M1 Mac models. So I see no reason not to make this available to users who need it. But at the same time, the app is primarily designed for iPhone and iPad, where it really shines. So I would rather see you leave a better review in the App Store on those platforms, than complain about how the app runs on Mac.
