## What is Marcus?

Most self-improvement apps make you feel good about yourself. Marcus asks whether you are. That's the difference.

Marcus is a daily Stoic practice app built on the same system Marcus Aurelius used to govern the Roman Empire, and that Epictetus used to find freedom as a slave. Not a habit tracker. Not a meditation timer. A structured daily practice rooted in two thousand years of the most tested philosophy for living well.

THE PRACTICE HAS FOUR PARTS.

Morning journal. Five Stoic prompts including premeditatio malorum, the ancient negative visualization technique that modern psychology echoes as a way to reduce anxiety and sharpen decision-making. Begin each day with intention instead of noise.

Daily reading. A passage each morning from Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, or Seneca, chosen against what you have said you are working on, with a practical reflection. It never gives you the same passage twice. Every quote is checked against its source: we audited our own library and removed fifty-five that were not what they claimed to be.

Evening journal. The nightly self-examination Seneca practiced: examine where you acted with virtue, confess where you fell short, release what you're carrying before sleep. The gap between who you are and who you admire only closes when you look at it honestly.

Emotion logger. Between stimulus and response, there is a space. This is that space. Log what moved you, identify the cognitive distortion, read the Stoic reframe. The same discipline the Stoics practiced, two thousand years before cognitive behavioral therapy gave it a name.

THE STOIC COMPASS.

At the center of the practice is your compass, in four parts. Why you practice. What pattern in yourself you will overcome. Who you are becoming. And your roles: the relational positions you actually occupy, parent, partner, colleague, citizen, and what each one asks of you. The Stoics called these your kathekonta. Marcus Aurelius reminded himself of his every morning.

Your compass is what the daily reading is matched against, so the practice gets more specific to you the longer you keep it.

BUILT DIFFERENTLY.

Marcus doesn't punish you for missing a day. Your longest streak remains. Your total days practiced remain. The current streak resets, and then you begin again. That's the Stoic response to failure. Not shame. Not starting over on Monday. The return.

No account required. Your journal, reflections, and logs never leave your device. The only thing collected is anonymous, aggregate usage to improve the app, never tied to you.

WEEKLY REVIEW.

Once a week, examine the whole. In the ledger you name the Virtue you most embodied and the one you fell short on. Week after week, the record accumulates into an honest picture of who you're becoming, not who you imagine yourself to be.

THE FOUR VIRTUES.

Wisdom, Courage, Temperance, Justice. The frame the whole practice hangs on. Not goals. Not habits. Ways of being you either embody in a given moment, or you don't.

MEMENTO MORI.

"You could leave life right now. Let that determine what you do." — Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

### 5/5 — Great app!

*2026-10-09*

Extremely helpful app that has boosted my productivity and made me more aware of the time I have in each day. Intermittent check-ins with your daily intention are a great way to keep yourself on track. It can help focus your meditation practice as well. Super slick app with many functions. Highly recommend📓🧘🏻‍♂️

### 5/5 — A journal that actually works

*2026-09-23*

I’ve tried journaling apps in the past, but this Stoic-focused practice actually grounds around creating a sustainable daily and weekly routine that I want to return to. It actually keeps me on track and accountable. 10/10

### 5/5 — Awesome

*2026-08-01*

I like the positioning a lot.
Most Stoic apps are just quote-of-the-day machines with a streak counter slapped on. This one is trying to do something closer to what Marcus Aurelius was actually doing — private, structured self-examination so you close the gap between the person you perform and the person you respect when nobody’s watching.
The “Stoic Compass” is the strongest part of what they’re showing. Forcing yourself to answer (and re-answer) why you’re here, what you’re working through, who you’re becoming, and which roles you’re responsible for is more useful than another affirmation. It’s a modern version of the daily orientation the Stoics practiced.
The tone of the copy is also better than most in this space. It’s not selling you calm or productivity. It’s selling the harder, less Instagrammable idea that self-respect is earned through repeated honest practice.
Whether the actual daily practice (morning journal + evening examen + the rest) is good enough to justify the subscription is the real test. A lot of these apps sound excellent on the onboarding screens and then feel thin once you’re inside. But the philosophy they’re aiming at is the right one.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.4.0 — 2026-10-28

Your first day is now free. Take the whole practice, morning preparation to evening review, before you decide.

New: Marcus Premium for life, one payment with nothing to renew.

Smaller fixes and polish throughout.

### 1.3.1 — 2026-09-09

The Compass now asks you the question.

Each section leads with what it is actually asking: why do I practice, what pattern in myself will I overcome, who am I becoming. The starting text answers those questions properly rather than talking past them.

Two fixes.

The daily reading no longer gives you a passage you have already been given. The filter meant to prevent that had never worked.

Saved lines return on their own schedule again. Keeping a new line used to disturb the order and could bring back something you had just seen.

### 1.3.0 — 2026-08-11

The Stoics

Twelve figures, now in the app: who they were, what they wrote, and which book to start with.

Saved lines

Every passage in Marcus can now be kept. Tap the heart on a daily reading, on an emotion, on the morning passage or the sealed day, and it joins your collection, where saved lines quietly resurface as you practice.

A pool you can trust

Every quote has been checked against its source. Passages that were not what they claimed have been removed, including some very famous ones, and 66 now carry their book and chapter. If a line is in Marcus, it is real.

The morning asks about other people

Marcus Aurelius began his mornings by naming who he would have to meet that day. Now yours does too: who you will find difficult, and what you owe them anyway. The prompt that rehearses adversity has been sharpened to ask what may come at you, rather than what you must do.

The weekly review reads your week back

What patterns am I noticing is the one question memory cannot answer, because memory is where patterns hide. Your week's entries now sit inside the review itself, day by day, so you answer it from the record.

Smaller things

Entries now keep the questions they were asked, so your archive stays true even when a prompt is reworded. Buttons grow with your system text size. Meditation downloads are half the size they were. And Day 1 no longer appears before a day has been credited.

### 1.2.0 — 2026-08-08

A seventh meditation on the dichotomy of control.

A mid-day pause: one attention question, held for a breath, then back
to your day. The Stoics called it prosoche. Off by default.

The evening journal now asks all three of Epictetus's questions. What
did I do well, what did I do badly, and what did I leave undone. The
third was missing.

Rotating passages on the journal and review screens, and a shortcut to
rate Marcus in More.

### 1.0.2 — 2026-07-24

No release notes.
