### 2/5 — Unreliable and confusing trip allocation

*2024-11-10, version 1.9.0*

So, this app exists to take data from the transponder, integrate with phone data and do two things: (i) feedback on driving style, this is OK. (ii) to allocate different drivers to different trips which Marmalade suggest will happen automatically, and is required as part of the insurance cover including ensuring that the young driver uses the car <50% of journeys .This is where its limitations appear:
1. You can only have one additional driver / app user for the account which means that when another parent drives the car, the journey is not properly recorded. If my wife’s use of the car is not recorded, it will erroneously push up my daughter’s %use of the car.
2. I have been allocated to trips despite my phone and I being nowhere near the car.
3. You can only be a “passenger” or “driver” for trips - there is no “I wasn’t in the car at all” option.

This is a shame, because the principle of the app is great and these should be easily remediable issues .

Until then - 2 stars only as you really do have to manually check each journey on both phones to remain vaguely accurate.

### 1/5 — Log in

*2025-03-28, version 1.9.0*

Tried to log in but no login email arrived. Even in junk folder.

### 1/5 — cancelled my policy for no reason. do no use this company.

*2025-03-25, version 1.9.0*

i used marmalade pay as you go insurance from july 2022 until march 2025. i had no problems with it until they notified me they were cancelling my policy because i wasn’t recording my journeys. no journeys were recorded because i hadn’t been using the car!!! i was away at university. your policy will be cancelled if you do not use it for a year, but i had no journeys for only 7 weeks. absolutely awful, i thought the point of pay as you go is that you only use it every now and then when you need to? policy cancelled for no good reason. do not use this company

### 1/5 — Always needs to know location??

*2025-02-28, version 1.9.0*

This is ok, but there are a couple of issues that you need to be aware of.
1) the app always wants to know your location when not using it- it complains if you turn it to ‘only when using’. There’s absolutely no reason for them to know location info when not driving. I challenge them to explain why it forces you to set to ‘always’.

I CHALLENGE MARMALADE TO EXPLAIN WHY THEY NEED TO TRACK 24/7.

2) it doesn’t understand context of any manoeuvre: you get penalised if you accelerate onto a main road (from a side road) to get up to speed of traffic. This is therefore teaching people that they must accelerate slowly when pulling out in front of traffic. That’s an absolutely dangerous thing to teach new drivers. Surely, it can deduce you are at a junction and can judge appropriately?

### 1/5 — please DONT use this

*2024-09-30, version 1.8.0*

It’s probably the worst insurance company out there. Inaccurate GPS , too harsh on cornering and a ridiculous, backwards and straight stupid belief on how to drive. So bad to the point where I’ve had advice from driving instructors and friends that race cars on a semi professional level tell me that your advice and the way you mark stuff is complete nonsense and even dangerous in some areas. It is no surprise that the drivers I know who have good scores on this app are the ones that cause the most danger and disruption to others since they don’t know how to properly drive. yet you think that’s good driving? What a joke of a company

### 1/5 — Ridiculously made insurance and app

*2024-09-29, version 1.8.0*

This insurance app suited me very well for the first year I had it, however as I’ve gained confidence, there have been many instances where this app has penalised me for making ‘mistakes’ that would have caused myself danger otherwise.

For example, I have to drive on the motorway every couple of weeks back from my university to my hometown, and on this journey there are eleven roundabouts. I go around these roundabout at safe but efficient speeds to not impede the flow of traffic - which is what roundabout are made for. Many times I have been given low ratings for going around the roundabout too quick, but slowing down further may have caused crashes or bumps. There were even a few times that the app says I’ve driven over the middle of large roundabouts!

Other examples include me being penalised for harsh braking, but that’s sometimes necessary to prevent damage or harm to yourself and your vehicle, especially on the motorway.

However, the crutch of the issue comes in my second year of using this insurance (due to the lowered insurance premium that I felt I couldn’t say no to) which started a month ago. All of the things that I was doing before which were deemed acceptable, have now started causing issues for the app, and more of my journeys are getting lower stars than they would have last year, which is highly concerning as a full time student who can only do a few hours work during semesters. Since, if I get two ‘red journeys’ in 30 days, I’ll have to pay more money, which seems highly unfair when the app become more critical, assuredly due to the hopes that I will breach their unknown terms.

Overall, I would recommend using this insurance right when you start driving, but after that it’s an entire waste. The only exception I could see that would make this not a waste, would be if you only drove around small towns and never travelled far. Since this insurance and app is certainly not made for long journeys or motorway driving.

### 1/5 — Terrible at working out who is driving

*2023-03-18, version 1.4.0*

Today the app logged 4 trips driven by me (the parent) when my daughter (who the insurance is intended for) was miles away. This is probably down to having the same app on my phone (for tracking my daughter’s drives) as she does. There’s clearly a bug here.

I’ve absolutely no idea why the app on my phone, whose sole purpose is to track may daughter’s driving, has to have Bluetooth on (when it shouldn’t be paired to the black box from my phone) or why it has to have GPS tracking (when it isn’t tracking my driving). I’ve switched off GPS for it, enabling it only when I want to check my daughter’s score for her last trip. Pretty sure there’s a GDPR violation here, collecting GPS information on me whenever and wherever I am, all the time, whether or not I am in the car.

The app also doesn’t track the number of journeys correctly. It’s a requirement that less than 50% of journeys are made by my daughter, but is currently showing as 60% in the app because the trips my wife makes to drive to work every day are not logged. I do hope we aren’t contacted about this.

Why not just supply a separate app for parents? Why are you tracking me? Are you tracking my daughter 100% of the time, even when not driving? It’s an easy fix, when she’s connected to the black box via bluetooth, switch on tracking.

### 1/5 — Worst insurance

*2022-11-03, version 1.3.0*

Not great for the Welsh country lanes, as many of your turns, will come up with a one star in cornering even at 10mph! This will then lead to a warning and then a penalty. Even after explaining that this is the natural traffic flow we were ignored and told later to pay £125 penalty fee.

Then in the last few months of the insurance the blackbox sensitivity increase dramatically and marmalade insisted that we paid £125 extra on top of the £983 that we already paid for that year.

Would not recommend to any young drivers.

### 1/5 — Absolutely useless

*2022-04-07, version 1.2.0*

This app is a good idea for young drivers but the implementation is absolutely totally hopeless. I’m registered as the parent (I think) but it seems to erroneously pick me up as the driver 90% of the time. I could perhaps understand the error when I’m at home as maybe my phone is near the car and it thinks I’m driving. However when my daughter reaches her destination (I’m at home at this point) it still picks me up as the driver for the return trip. It’s the most unreliable thing I’ve ever seen…well to be fair anything Bluetooth is pretty unreliable at the best of times. Just useless and the people who answer the phones at Marmalade don’t have much of a clue either.

### 1/5 — Unfair

*2021-03-01, version 1.1.0*

It’s really frustrating. Living out in the countryside a lot of deer jump out on front of you... which means a lot of breaking and as a result poor scores.
Another thing is that no matter how long the trip is i.e 5 mins or 5 hours you still only have 5 chances or something. This is annoying because it is obliviously more likely that there will be more events with longer trips but the app does not take it into account.
Just a bit frustrating.

### 1/5 — False recording of data

*2021-02-07, version 1.1.0*

The insurance is my daughter’s and I am a named driver and only drive the car ever now and again. I have installed the app as per the instructions and it has recorded my journeys which was showing 100%. Now after not driving for nearly 3 weeks my score has gone down to 89% and it say I have been using my phone while driving, this is false. You need to sort this out, who knows what other false information it records, to me it seems like a scam to increase the insurance of the policy holder when renewal is due!

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Not bad

*2025-07-23, version 1.9.0*

Not bad

### 5/5 — Easy to Use

*2025-04-03, version 1.9.0*

Once you get the hang of it this app is really easy to use. Loads of info available so you can see how you are driving

### 5/5 — Marmalade

*2025-02-06, version 1.9.0*

Pragmatic and reasonable; careful in rush hour though, as zipping dynamically into gaps gets flagged easily as harsh acceleration and cornering. Definitely suited to early drivers and helps to encourage good driving.

### 5/5 — I am a dad with daughter having insurance

*2025-01-03, version 1.9.0*

Very easy to use app. Information and data is easy to understand.

### 5/5 — H

*2025-01-02, version 1.9.0*

Easy to navigate, very visual

### 5/5 — Excellent app and excellent insurance for a young driver

*2024-12-20, version 1.9.0*

Having lost my father in a car accident to a learner driver I wanted to keep my 17 year old son safe to himself and other drivers. I think all young drivers up to 25 years of age should be forced to have insurance and an app like this to help make them be safer drivers.

### 5/5 — Actually Quite Impressive

*2024-12-13, version 1.9.0*

This app is very good for first time drivers like myself. It really shows how well you are driving, and strives me to do better when it picks out things i should improve on.

would totally recommend this company as a whole !

### 5/5 — My black box

*2024-12-12, version 1.9.0*

Very good app. Does really good in tracking

### 5/5 — Great app

*2024-12-10, version 1.9.0*

Clear and informative

### 5/5 — Great young persons insurance

*2024-12-04, version 1.9.0*

Great insurance company for learner and new drivers.
The app works well with the black box and rates all journeys. An excellent way to monitor my eighteen year old son’s driving.
