## What is Masking Tone?

MASKING TONE - Tinnitus Residual Inhibition

Get temporary tinnitus relief backed by science.

Masking Tone uses a clinically validated technique called Residual Inhibition (RI) - a well-documented method where brief exposure to a precisely tuned tone temporarily suppresses tinnitus. Up to 90% of tinnitus sufferers can experience RI. Most apps get it wrong. Masking Tone gets it right.

HOW IT WORKS:
- Step 1: Fine-tune the frequency to match your tinnitus pitch — precision matters.
- Step 2: Find your Minimum Masking Level — the lowest volume that covers your tinnitus.
- Step 3: The app sets the level 10 dB above that threshold — exactly where the science shows RI works.
- Step 4: Listen for 60 seconds. When the tone stops, enjoy the silence.

Try AM 10 Hz mode for deeper suppression — research (Neff et al., 2017) shows amplitude-modulated tones outperform steady tones and are better tolerated.

TONE JOURNAL — TRACK YOUR PROGRESS
Every completed session is logged with frequency, mode, and outcome. The History view (free, last 7 days) shows your recent sessions at a glance.

Tone Journal (£2.99 one-time, no subscription) unlocks:
- Your full session history — every entry you've ever logged
- Frequency-over-time chart — see how your tinnitus shifts across weeks and months
- Steady vs AM mode comparison — find which actually works better for you
- Audiologist PDF export — share a clean clinical report with your specialist

BACKED BY RESEARCH:
The RI protocol is based on 16 peer-reviewed studies published 2008–2024, from leading audiology institutions. The technique has been used in clinical settings for over 40 years.

Note: Masking Tone is not a medical device and does not treat or cure tinnitus. Results vary. Consult your audiologist before use.

### 4.1 — 2026-07-13

Masking Tone 4.1

This update focuses on the things you told us mattered most:

• Your tone is remembered. Your pitch, volume, mode, and session length now carry over between launches, so you never have to re-find your tinnitus pitch again.
• Wider pitch range. You can now tune all the way up to 12,500 Hz, for higher-pitched tinnitus.
• Smoother, quieter playback. Tones fade in and out cleanly with no clicks or pops.
• Respects your music. Opening the app no longer interrupts whatever you're listening to, and your audio resumes the moment a session ends.
• Your check-ins are safe. Completed sessions always save to your history, with a clear Skip option if you'd rather not answer.
• Screen stays awake during a session, and playback recovers gracefully from calls and interruptions.
• The waveform now moves while a tone is playing.
• Accessibility and polish: full VoiceOver support, gentle haptic feedback while tuning and on play/stop, and times shown in your device's 12- or 24-hour format.

Thanks for using Masking Tone.

### 4.0 — 2026-06-03

Masking Tone 4.0 - introducing Tone Journal.

Every completed session now lives in your History (tap the History
button on the main screen). The last 7 days are free.

Unlock Tone Journal (£2.99 one-time, no subscription) to get:
- Your full session history
- A frequency-over-time chart showing how your tinnitus shifts
- Steady vs AM 10Hz mode comparison — see which works better
- An audiologist-friendly PDF export

This is the biggest update since launch.

### 3.7 — 2026-05-18

tiny bug fixes.

### 3.6 — 2026-04-15

v3.6
AM Mode - a new 10 Hz amplitude modulated tone option, shown in research to produce stronger tinnitus suppression than a steady tone
How It Works - new in-app guide explaining the science behind residual inhibition, with citations

### 3.5 — 2026-03-03

Version 3.5

This update is a significant improvement to how the app produces residual inhibition, based on peer-reviewed clinical research.

Volume control — Set your masking level independently for precise calibration
60-second session mode — The tone now runs a timed session and stops automatically, matching the clinically studied protocol
Fine-tune frequency — New ±1 Hz stepper for precise pitch matching
How It Works — New in-app guide explaining the science behind residual inhibition
Session cooldown — Guided rest period between sessions to preserve effectiveness
Post-session check-in — Track whether and how long your tinnitus reduced
