## What is Mastery?

Most goal apps are a list you write once and then avoid. Mastery is built around the opposite habit: coming back.

You plan a day you can actually finish, work through it one step at a time, and each evening tell the truth about how it went. Over a week that produces what a to-do list never does — a picture of how you actually work.

FOUR RANGES, ONE LADDER

Every goal lives in Today, This Week, This Month or This Year, and Roadmap holds all four at once. Nothing expires and nothing turns red — a goal still open just says how long it has waited, and whether you work it, move it or drop it is left to you.

A DAY YOU CAN FINISH

Today shows only what you committed to. Tap any step to start a focus sprint; the countdown carries on over your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island, so you can put the phone face down.

SOLVE, INSTEAD OF REWRITING THE GOAL

When something stalls, most apps let you edit the deadline. Mastery gives you somewhere to think: name the problem, list the causes you suspect, then commit to one — a list of five is a way of avoiding the question. Mastery turns that cause into a goal, and afterwards you record whether it worked. Both answers close the loop.

SUGGESTIONS, NOT AUTOPILOT

Write a goal however you think it — “gym 3x a week from Monday” is fine — and Mastery drafts the steps and sets the range from the timeframe you mentioned. Write a note and it offers the notebook that note belongs in. Get stuck, and Solve suggests what to check, then what might address the cause you chose.

Nothing is ever filled in for you: suggestions are rows you tap to keep, and one switch turns them all off. This needs a device that supports Apple Intelligence; without one you get editable starter steps, labelled as a template, that never count against your plan.

AN HONEST EVENING

Each evening, Today asks three short questions: what you set out to do, what happened, and what you would change. Under a minute.

GOALS THAT REPEAT

Mark a goal as a routine and it returns each cycle with its steps cleared, on the cadence of the range it sits in. Insights shows where the misses fell — and cycles you never opened the app for count as no record rather than as failures.

A REVIEW, NOT A SCORE

Insights answers what a single day cannot: which days you turn up, whether the plans you set are the plans you keep, where your rate is heading. Findings are sentences, not charts to interpret.

NOTES, NOT AN INBOX

Dated entries in notebooks you name, searchable across all of them, with no unread state and no red badge. A note you never revisit has still done its job.

PRIVATE BY CONSTRUCTION

No account is required; all goals, notes, and reflections stay in your private iCloud database. Steps, notes filing, and evening suggestions process locally—except Solve’s two suggestions, which send only the problem statement to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute (not retained or trained on). Mastery tracks feature use without text; disable it in Settings › Privacy. Export all data as JSON anytime.

ALSO

• Quick capture from every tab, ⌘N on a keyboard
• Reminders each morning and evening, off anytime in Settings
• Light, dark or system
• Full VoiceOver support and Dynamic Type
• Runs on iPhone and iPad
• A searchable user guide in Settings

FREE, AND WHAT PRO ADDS

Free gives you every goal, step and note, unlimited routines and streaks, the whole of Solve, unlimited 25-minute sprints, and the last seven days of Insights in full.

Pro opens longer review windows, the hour and weekday patterns, the pace forecast, unmetered suggestions, every sprint length, two streak freezes a month, notebooks beyond the third, and backup files. A lapsed subscription never locks your data away, and importing a backup is free forever.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 3.0 — 2026-09-16

Mastery is the goals-and-steps app it always was — now built around the whole loop: plan a day, work it in focus sprints, work out why something stalls instead of just rewriting it, and review what actually happened. This is the largest update since the app was only goals and steps.

• Four ranges, one ladder. Every goal sits in Today, This Week, This Month or This Year, and Roadmap holds all four at once. Nothing expires and nothing turns red — a goal still open just says how long it has waited.

• Focus sprints that keep going. Tap any step to start one; the countdown carries on over your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island, so you can put the phone face down.

• Solve: a place to think, not just a list. When a goal stalls, name the problem, list the causes you suspect, commit to one, turn it into a goal, then come back and record whether it worked. Both answers close the loop — this is the app's actual differentiator, not another to-do list.

• Suggestions, written honestly. Write a goal however you think it — "gym 3x a week from Monday" drafts the steps and sets the range from the words you used. Solve suggests what to check when you're stuck on a cause, then what might address the one you commit to. Notes offer the notebook they belong in. Every suggestion is a row you tap to keep, never something filled in for you — and a device without Apple Intelligence gets an honest, editable starter template instead, clearly labelled, that never spends your monthly allowance.

• An evening ritual, and a real review. Today asks three short questions each evening, under a minute. Insights turns a week of those nights into what a single day never shows: which days you turn up, whether the plans you set are the plans you keep, and where your rate is heading — sentences, not charts to interpret.

• Notes, not an inbox. Dated entries in notebooks you name, searchable across all of them. No unread state, no red badge — a note you never revisit has still done its job.

• Routines that repeat honestly. Mark a goal as a routine and it returns each cycle with its steps cleared. A cycle you never opened the app for counts as no record, not a failure.

• Reminders, on by default. A morning nudge to plan the day and an evening one to close it — because a reminder you never see is a habit that never forms. Turn either off in Settings any time; nothing else changes if you do.

• Private, and syncing properly. Goals, problems, notes, notebooks and reflections all live in your own private iCloud database and sync across your devices. No account, and no server of ours ever sees what you write.

• Everything else. Full VoiceOver and Dynamic Type support, quick capture from any tab, backup export and import, and a searchable guide in Settings.

Settings › How Mastery works has the full breakdown of every suggestion and where each one is written.
