WHAT IS THE MAT CALCULATOR:
The Mat Calculator is a simple app that allows users to determine the missing information within  their framing project. When I worked in a frame shop I found out that this simple calculation is often difficult for people to perform. When not performed correctly then it can lead to costly mistakes of needing to scrap incorrectly cut mats or the appearance of the mat is incorrect. 

With the low one-time cost of this app, even if it saves you from scrapping one mat then its already paid for itself. There are no In-App Purchases or subscriptions to sign up for. Our hope is that DIY framers will be able to use the matting calculator for all projects both big and small. 

HOW DOES IT WORK:
The Mat Calculator works off of the principle that custom framers will start with a known image, mat, or frame. Then they need to size the unknown items to make the frame work.  With this in mind then there are 3 calculation modes: 

MAT CALCULATION:  This mode allows for the user to enter in their frame size, and picture size and let the calculator determine the boarders needed to complete the frame. In this calculation there is an option to specify the bottom mat boarder to be wider, which is common in many frame styles. This is the most common calculation needed.
IMAGE CALCULATION: This mode allows for the user to calculate what size to print an image when they have an existing frame. The user will be prompted to enter the frame size and the desired mat boarders, then the calculator will specify the image size needed for the framing project to work. 
FRAME CALCULATION: This mode allows the user to calculate the frame size. The user will specify the image size and what mat boarders to use, then the calculator will determine the custom frame size needed to make the project work. 

All calculations end with the option to preview your mat. Helps users to see if the mat proportions look good. Previews are free of watermarks and can have screenshots taken for later use or sharing. 

Many customers say that these are easy calculations and can be done by hand. Yes, that is true. It can also be said that all math can be done by hand, but we use calculators everyday to make our life easier. This app is no exception. We are trying to make your life easier and reduce your mistakes.

This app is targeted towards galleries, frame shops, and DIY framers. If you are wanting to frame any crafts, fine art, child’s art, needle point, cross-stitch, polaroid, drawing, quilt square, photographs, watercolors, posters, and any other image or picture you love. Then this app will help you accomplish that framing project with success so you can display it on your wall with pride. 

There are many companies that sell mat cutters: Fiskers, Logan, and more. These along with mat cutters users will need to buy supplies and these can be found from many craft stores including: Michaels, Hobby Lobby, JoAnn’s, Dick Blick’s, local art gallery, FramesUSA.com, MatShop.com, and more.

I used to use this app and loved it. Now with the latest iPhone OS it crashes, even with my older iPad. It’s too bad the app was never updated.

Can’t see the back and forth buttons on an iPhone 13. They are hidden under the clock and battery icons on the screen. Difficult app to use. Not worth the frustration.

And don’t get this very simple yet clumsy app. Easier to use paper and pencil. It can’t do anything that you can’t do…and faster. Would be great if there were more frames plus accommodation for double and triple matting. OK, if you are hopeless with math, this will help. Otherwise…fergitaboutit.

I'm sorry that you felt it was clumsy, the guided interface is intended to help users through the calculation. The app previously had a single screen for all inputs and that caused users to get confused as well. We will look into other solutions for improvement.

Im an amateur photographer and new to mat framing, using a Logan mat cutter, this app is almost essential for me.  Well worth the purchase!

The overlap calculation is not clear and does not calculate the correct opening. 
There is no double window mat feature
There is no allowance feature which is a standard 1/8” across the board when calculating and ordering frames.
