## What is MathGraphs?

MathGraphs draws equations that ordinary graphing apps cannot.

Most graphers need y on its own: you give them y = f(x) and they plot it. MathGraphs takes the whole equation, in the form f(x, y) = g(x, y), and finds every point that satisfies it. That means circles, ellipses, hyperbolas, cubics, spirals and implicit curves that cannot be rearranged into y = something.

Type x^2 + y^2 = 5 and you get a circle. Type y = x*tan(ln(sqrt(x^2 + y^2))) and you get a spiral. Neither is a function of x, and both plot in the same way.

HOW IT WORKS

Both sides of your equation are parsed and evaluated across a fine grid, and the curve is traced wherever the two sides balance. The resolution follows the size of your screen, so the curve stays smooth as you zoom in.

WHAT YOU CAN TYPE

• Trigonometric: sin, cos, tan, asin, acos, atan, atan2, sinh, cosh, tanh
• Exponential and logarithmic: ln, log, exp, and the constant e
• Also: sqrt, abs, sign, floor, ceil, round, max, min, mod, pow, and pi
• Powers with ^, associating to the right, so 2^3^4 means 2^(3^4)
• Products written naturally: 2x, 3(x+1) and 2sin(x) all work

The four range boxes accept expressions too, not just numbers — 2*pi, pi/2 and sqrt(2) are all valid, so you can frame a trigonometric curve exactly.

MOVING AROUND

Drag to pan. Pinch to zoom. Widen or narrow the range a step at a time, or square the axes so a circle looks like a circle. The range boxes follow along as you move, and you can type into them at any point to jump somewhere precise.

Version 2.0 is a complete rewrite.

The original MathGraphs was built on Adobe Flash, which iOS no longer supports. Everything has been rebuilt from scratch — the parser, the plotting, and the whole interface — so the app runs natively on current iPhones and iPads.
