## What is Mattebox?

Take your photos and videos to the next level! Apply a beautiful filter in one tap, or use the sliders to perfect your look. With easy-to-use tools and filmic results, Mattebox is as pro as you want to go.

— STREAMLINED EDITING —

Mattebox gives you fast access the adjustments you use most, like exposure, saturation and color balance. When you want more control, just swipe up on the image to reveal more adjustments. Once you learn where your favorite adjustments are, you’ll be able to fine-tune an image in seconds.

— FILTERS, UNFILTERED —

New aesthetic filters arrive regularly in the Feed—if you like one, just double tap to collect it in your Favorites!

Every filter is editable, so if you apply a filter but the contrast is not quite right, you can simply adjust it (some adjustments require Mattebox Pro). Like your change? Save it as a new filter! You can even share it as an App Clip, no install required.

— REAL PHOTOGRAPHY, INSPIRED BY FILM —

Mattebox makes all of your images look their best, but for the ultimate quality, shoot ProRAW or RAW photos (using the Camera app, Halide or Adobe Lightroom). When you open a RAW file, Mattebox strips away the AI-powered local tone mapping, giving you a less processed, more natural image.

RAW photos also take full advantage of the custom imaging core in Mattebox, which is based on the way analog film responds to light. Just like classic film stocks from Fuji, Kodak and Ilford, Mattebox rolls off highlights beautifully, so you can increase exposure without blowing out your highlights.

— VIDEO —

Whether you’re making reels or shooting your next indie film, Mattebox has you covered. You don’t have to be an expert in color grading to make your videos pop! You can use all the same Mattebox tools and filters on standard 4K HDR video or Apple ProRes Log footage.

Once you develop a look, use Mattebox Pro to export a LUT for use in your editing system (compatible with Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve and many more) or camera (check your camera manual; LUT support varies).

— FEATURES —

• Streamlined editing interface
• High-quality filters
• Save your edits as a new filter
• Share a filter as an App Clip, no install required
• Image processing core based on analog film
• Supports 4K HDR video & Apple Log
• Pro-quality 3-way Color Correction
• Open RAW or Apple ProRAW images from 820+ cameras

— MATTEBOX PRO —

All the main features of Mattebox are free. But a subscription to Mattebox Pro adds even more:

• Tonal controls for Highlights, Lights, Darks and Shadows
• HDR-capable RGB and HSL curves, to create truly custom looks
• Physically accurate Pro Diffusion, modeled on real mist filters
• Detailed RAW controls for fine-grained adjustments
• Export filters as Adobe Lightroom Profiles* or 3D LUTs

### 4/5 — Fab!

*2014-09-01*

I love this app!! Some things that would make it a 5 star: ability to edit our saved combos w/out having to save as a new favorite, fix the FB connection, make it easier to reset settings to defaults, open all new pics w no edits- just as the original. Most importantly, get rid of the system where it asks which version of the pic you want to open. I want to open the one I selected, so just make it simple. Also, that doesn't work if I edited the pic in another app after mattebox and then want to open it in mattebox again.

### 5/5 — Best photography app on appstore

*2014-08-21, version 2.0.1*

Professional, Easy, high Quality, Like DSLR for iphone

### 5/5 — BEST CAMERA APP OUT THERE

*2014-06-20*

Do yourself a favor and purchase this app. Your photographs from there on out will thank you. Thanks for the great tool Ben.

### 5/5 — Outstanding!

*2014-03-21, version 2.0.1*

Mattebox is at the top of my front screen, and is my first ‘shooter’ — and my first editor!
Simplicity on the surface, complexity under the hood!
Point, compose, press to focus & expose, slide finger to shoot. Simple!
Editing has much more complexity that I'm still working through. Excellent editing tools (though I miss Sharpening …) Filters are excellent, plus eminently adjustable. Socially-available filters as well.

### 5/5 — The best UI is never in the way

*2014-03-18*

An amazing example of User Interface design. Excellent!

### 5/5 — wow

*2014-02-20*

This is my favorite camera app ever. Shoots tiff, non-destructive editing, you can import the filters in to Lightroom or curves into photoshop. SO GOOD.

### 4/5 — Good but not (yet) great

*2014-02-10*

Good: Nice and simple camera, easy to operate, exposure adjustments, terrific output quality, and wonderful filters.

Bad: There are still a few bugs and MANY ease-of-use issues. Workflow is not smooth.

I have send my feedback to the developer. If he responds and fixes the issues, I will gladly change to five stars. This app should be five-star but not there yet.

### 5/5 — The. Best.

*2014-01-30*

Overall, tried most every app. VSCO cam was my go to, but this took taking photos on iPhone to the next level. If you are on the fence, just take the plunge and buy it. I would like to see some sort of social/blog integration like VSCO Grid.

### 5/5 — Mattebox Rocks

*2014-01-19*

I would like to see a little bit more social atmosphere within the community portion of this app. Unless I'm missing something I would like to be able to search for more than just the top 100 of which I think there are less sometimes maybe there's a way that that can be modified for the future. With regard to the quality of this app... I have used virtually every camera app in the store and there's very few that I will always go back to use sometimes just because they're fun to use this is one of those, but it also produces a quality image. I enjoy fine-tuning the images and I think the interface is unique, attractive and the developer is very much interested in hearing from you. So, before you have any negative feedback give him a try.

### 5/5 — Great app!

*2014-01-09, version 2.0.1*

Fantastic app for picture taking with save as tiff for quality. Editing in the app is easy with a lot of filters from other users. Use them as a starting point and create a new one or simply start from scratch.
Very happy with the app!

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 3.0.12 — 2024-11-16

This version fixes a crash when selecting more photos when you set photo library access to "Limited."

3.0 is a massive reboot! For the full release notes, check the prior version.

### 3.0.11 — 2024-11-07

3.0 is a massive reboot, arriving 10 years (yes, really!) after I removed the previous version and took a break from developing apps. Now I'm back, and every single feature in Mattebox has been rethought and rewritten. But the mission remains the same as ever: making it quick & easy to get the absolute best results from your photos.

Just as with 1.0 and 2.0, the guiding principle of Mattebox 3.0 is “more control with fewer controls.” The basic controls you use most—color balance, contrast and exposure—are powered by a brand new imaging core, which is modeled on the way analog film responds to high-dynamic-range (HDR) scenes.

Because this new imaging core is HDR-native, Mattebox works seamlessly with formats like ProRAW, 4K HDR video and Apple ProRes Log.

Just as with previous versions of Mattebox, you can save your edits as a filter and easily share your filters. New to this version is the ability to send a filter as an App Clip. When a friend taps your link or scans your QR code on an iOS device, they’ll be able to open up the App Clip and try your filter without installing Mattebox. And once they download Mattebox, they can add your filter to their Favorites.

Best of all: for the first time, Mattebox is free! You can use all the core adjustments with no restrictions. You can edit 48MP ProRAW photos, use the 3-way color correction tool on Apple ProRes Log footage, and even save and share filters.

If you want to go further, a paid subscription to Mattebox Pro provides some powerful features to help you craft your own unique look. This includes HDR-aware RGB and HSL curves, physically-modeled Pro Diffusion, finer RAW adjustments, and the ability to export your filters as LUTs or Adobe Lightroom Profiles. Mattebox is as pro as you want to go.

I’m so excited to share this update with you! Tag your images #mattebox, and if you have feedback or need support, I’m just a DM or email away.

### 2.0.1 — 2013-11-15

Version 2.0 is an absolutely major overhaul of Mattebox. I worked hard to get rid of all the bugs, but there may be a few in there, hiding! If you have trouble with anything, contact me via the web site or @mattebox on Twitter!

VERSION 2.0
• Completely redesigned interface
• Brand new filter sharing network
• A true exposure compensation dial for the camera—a World First for the App Store
• Full RGB Curves
• Realistic film grain
• Live filter view in the camera
• Export filters to Adobe® Photoshop® or Lightroom®
• Integrated documentation
• For more details, check out the Mattebox website

### 1.3 — 2012-01-16

Now includes "Info on half-press" as seen in the online video. Warning: this setting will generate a shutter sound on half-press, so turn the iPhone to silent to avoid hearing two shutter sounds for every photo. This sound is caused by Apple, so I can't prevent it. I have filed a bug with Apple.

This setting can be found in the Settings app. Also included is a switch to enable or disable Mattebox.net preset links.
