We liked they when there wasn’t anything to be said it didn’t play a repetitive sound track in the back and the humor didn’t make you cringe. Our primary challenge was in the Road To Hana. He warns about driving too fast and audio getting out of sync, and we were in sync. But sometimes he talks too much without enough of a detailed description and the next thing you know you are past the point of interest. I would prefer he tells you what is coming up, short additional content and then tells you again when to turn BEFORE you arrive at the point of interest. If you have the book, quite a bit of the content is directly from the book. It is supplemented by some new content. I really like his commentary on which items are worth stopping at and which ones are not. **Developer response:** Aloha and mahalo for your kind review and great suggestion! It uses GPS and requires no wifi or cellular connection. We got it for our recent trip to Maui. It literally follows you around the island and really is like having the author in the backseat. It was invaluable on our drive to Hana, Maui’s west side and on the road up Haleakala. Like his books, we agree with all his comments and recommendations. The narratives are automatically keyed to your GPS location, so you just turn it on and let it tell you what you are seeing, where to stop (and what to skip) and everything about the history and geology of Maui. However it just will not work on my phone. It keeps saying that I need to retry the Wi-Fi. But my Wi-Fi is working great. Hopefully it gets worked out and I can try it on my next trip to Maui. ### 1/5 — App won’t function after install *2025-08-02, version 6.0* This app won’t install. It gives me 3 options on first open: null, restore purchase and preview. Null says “purchase failed”. Preview downloads and installs a zip file. Then if you click one of the buttons it crashes and closes. Opening it back up leads to a neverending circle, behind which it says “improper format”. Was looking forward to using this on our trip. I liked the commentary so I purchased the app. It does not work /automatically play at all. I cannot drive and then tap the little dots to hear the commentary while driving. Trouble shooting instructions did not work. Now I cannot figure out how to get a refund. Very frustrated. We wanted to go to Hana but app kept guessing we wanted to go elsewhere. Basically, useless to us. ### 1/5 — Wasted my Money *2022-02-02* Everything started out just fine. We left Kihei and planned to take the full circle route to Hana only we chose to go around in the opposite direction than usual. The narration was interesting, helpful and sometimes funny. However, the minute we passed the turn-off to the Haleakalā crater, the narration just stopped. It couldn’t locate our position. All notifications were turned on and working well until it simply stopped. I do recall the narrator stating something like, “not to worry if you stop and start as I will pick up wherever you are located.” Well, we never stopped at all before the program simply ended. I reviewed the troubleshooting tips and finally called the phone number twice, and left a message once but no one even bothered to respond. I was a fan of the Maui Revealed franchise but not any more. This was a total waste of my money. And now that I’m no longer in Maui, it’s completely useless. **Developer response:** Aloha, so sorry you had an issue with your app. We did not get a call or message from you. For no apparent reason it stopped loading/would not work. Was very bummed to not have it for the remainder of our trip. ### 2/5 — Not family friendly! *2022-06-22* The app works fine but the narration is cringeworthy at times and we frequently found ourselves turning down the volume given our young (5 and 9) kids were in the car. From tales of the narrator’s swim trunks getting sucked into an underwater scooter leaving him naked and figuring out what to do, to repeated violent accounts of Maui history, to cringeworthy anatomical references to describe Maui’s landmarks and sarcastic weigh ins on Hawaii public policy, all with the undertone of the narrator’s cynicism, this app, while effective and fine for teens and adults is just…weird…in its fixation to narrate so frequently with such an edge. It’s at times like listening to the awkward relative at the family dinner who can’t really read the room. **Developer response:** Aloha, Mahalo for your feedback. Tried all the troubleshooting suggestions and nothing worked. We had to resort to browse mode with my wife as operator as we hit waypoints. It is loaded with interesting tips on what to see and what to avoid. Answer: very beneficial. As we drove around Maui, the author gave a narrative of places where we were. Some of the narratives were just like the book's text, but hearing it while driving was much better than trying to read it and being unable to see what we were driving past. Many of the narratives were punctuated with descriptions and stories that are not in the guidebook. And driving tips were nice, too. For example, as we approached a highway intersection, the author would tell us which way to go -- For example, go straight to go to Kahului and turn right to go to Haleakala. After several years of being away, we returned to visit Maui last week and decided to try the app. We learned so much and literally drove every inch of the island listening and stopping where we wanted. I felt like Andy was our personal tour guide and good friend :) Can’t recommend it enough. Will definitely download again on visits to other islands in the future.
