### 2/5 — Can’t trust it!

*2024-11-02*

Essential for commercial driving in winter, this app and the information it contains is embarrassingly bad compared to other states that provide clear, detailed and up to date information on roads and conditions. Maybe call the app developers of MN, CO, WY or ND etc see if they can give you some pointers!

### 2/5 — Destination point or start point?

*2023-02-20, version 1.2.1*

Setting the destination point is too confusing. It should be easy. But it acts like it’s my start point.

### 3/5 — A little clunky, but works.

*2022-11-18, version 1.1*

Title says it all.

Move the button that plays the robot voice of someone reading the weather report. That’s where the “close”button typically is, not a “play sound” button. I always end up having to close the app to get that robot voice to stop telling me how icy it is.

### 2/5 — Bad UX/UI

*2022-11-05, version 1.0.19*

There are some additional features and enhanced visuals from the previous version. But at the core, people used this map for the basic function of judging how good or bad the roads are, especially during the winter months. While this map offers more color classifications for road status, there seems to be some unnecessary “enhancements” that are more “bells and whistles” than functional necessity. The fact that the developer responds to the majority of these comments explaining how to find the road legend is telling that they reinvented a wheel that didn’t need to be reimagined. Why not just make the legend static? On your phone, when you’re traveling, you can’t view the map and the legend “key” at the same time. At the very least, use standard icons people are already familiar with in interactive map apps.

One of my biggest issues with this map is the appearance that it doesn’t get updated as often as the previous version. I’m sure MDT will say that it gets updated as employees drive the roads and push those updates, but is there a lag in that updated data? Are the updates not happening as often? Is it cumbersome for the employees to enter those updates? More importantly, maybe this map gets updated just as often as the previous version, but because of the other negative enhancements, I no longer trust the integrity of this map. Perception is everything, and over the last year, I don’t see any good faith changes in this map that addresses some pretty clear, universal issues stakeholders have with this app. Disappointed.

### 1/5 — Bad just bad

*2022-08-25, version 1.0.19*

This app is just bad, completely missed the bar on what a road conditions map should be it’s not easy to use not user-friendly and it’s just. Added useless features and made the legend so difficult to see and use that it almost makes it unusable. Unless it’s fixed to something way better which I’m told is in the works skip it and use something else. Shame on you montana this is bad

### 1/5 — Aweful

*2022-08-24, version 1.0.19*

never make this app compatable with Mac OS plesae at least this platform is free of the crap you call an app

### 2/5 — No improvement

*2022-04-22, version 1.0.16*

Not much better than the older version. Legend not readily visible. I like the easier access to road cameras, but wish more cameras were available. App on my iPad just crashed, locked up and was showing a blank screen only. I had to delete app and reload to fix the issue.

### 1/5 — Horrible update

*2022-04-13, version 1.0.16*

I agree this is a horrible update and a total step backwards. I can’t even begin to imagine how many tax dollars were spend developing an update that did not need to happen. Bring back the old app! The previous version was way more user friendly!

### 1/5 — Terrible

*2022-04-13, version 1.0.16*

The app is terrible! I have to go to the App Store every time to open it so I can see the map.

### 1/5 — Obtuse

*2022-04-12, version 1.0.15*

This was a useful app that is now so clunky and unfriendly. It took crazy turns. Looking at Macdonald pass I was connected to Ingomar! Why are cameras so hard to find at all much less follow? Trying to enter a route is so difficult I gave up.

### 1/5 — Old app was easier

*2022-02-02, version 1.0.12*

The app needs a legend that describes what the colors on the map mean

### 1/5 — Just bad

*2022-01-22, version 1.0.12*

I feel this should have been a custom made app not something off the shelf that was available, and made to work. This app is not what a road conditions map should be. It’s not easy to use not user friendly and too difficult to use with one hand. Blah blah blah old code needed revamping and this was the best option. We deserve much better than something copied from other states.

### 1/5 — Terrible

*2022-01-21, version 1.0.12*

Took a good interactive map and regurgitated this one. Not handy, not easy to navigate. Sometimes simple is better

### 1/5 — New update is terrible

*2022-01-13, version 1.0.12*

Took an easy to use application and made it abysmal. Some new information is useful but not at expense of workable format. Person who signed off on this should be reassigned or let go. Terrible waste of Montana taxpayer dollars.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Frequent traveler

*2026-03-11, version 1.2.8*

This app is not user friendly

### 1/5 — Can’t turn it off

*2025-12-28, version 1.2.8*

This app is not great. Once you open it, it sits in the background constantly on. You can’t log out of it or turn it off. If I want to church the roads before my trip I can, but then I have to power my phone off in order to stop the app from running. I’ve stopped using the app because I don’t want to have to power off my phone every time.

### 1/5 — Don’t get

*2025-12-10, version 1.2.8*

Always 5 hours off Atleast

### 1/5 — 511 app

*2025-02-16, version 1.2.4*

You ruined a perfectly good road conditions map to use during winter months. I don’t like this one never have & just now getting around to writing a review. If it’s not broken why change it. Someone just made $$ off the change. Thanks for listening.

### 1/5 — Not user friendly

*2024-02-13, version 1.2.4*

The old app was so much better. You can’t look at the map and legend at the same time so you have to go back and forth over and over. Really disappointing, and navigating on the map while reading the legend is impossible. I can’t believe it hasn’t been changed as the reviews from two years ago state the same problem. Give us the old app back! This is trash.

### 1/5 — drains battery

*2023-11-27, version 1.2.3*

This app runs in the background and I couldn't turn off that option, so it ran my battery down

### 1/5 — What a piece of crap.

*2023-10-26, version 1.2.2*

Go take some ideas from Wyoming North Dakota South Dakota. Seriously this is a lame app to use. Whatever it cost to build this was a total waist of money.

### 1/5 — Absolutely terrible to navigate

*2023-03-26, version 1.2.1*

Wyoming 511 is simple and easy to use. I wish the Montana 511 was easier to navigate and use. There’s like 12 different “road conditions options” and Wyoming has 5. Montanas cameras don’t even freaking work???? I was trying to travel through and the cameras were no help and pitch black. The Wyoming cameras keep updated and have night vision so you can see them in the dark. I’m extremely disappointed in this app.

### 1/5 — Not very useful

*2023-02-15, version 1.2.1*

This app is not user friendly. It is difficult to navigate and is not intuitive. Worthless.

### 1/5 — Not trustworthy

*2022-12-29, version 1.2.1*

At best they update road conditions twice a day in the winter. The old version was way better. In Montana this MUST be updated more often if you want this to be an app that can be used.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Surprisingly useful

*2024-11-24, version 1.2.4*

Never expected a government developed app to be so well done. I’ve got to give it to the department of transportation on this one.

### 5/5 — Free app version of website

*2024-02-04, version 1.2.3*

Better than expected from a free state app. It’s better than the website and will live on my phone forever now. That’s it. Rating 5 to balance the hate.

### 5/5 — Great App

*2022-12-28, version 1.2.1*

This app is well laid out and has great, helpful information!
Better than the apps for the 2 states below MT

### 5/5 — Detailed and Informative

*2022-12-14, version 1.2.0*

Appreciate the details provided especially with how interesting MT weather can get. There are lots of layers for conditions and I take that over vague any day. Want to see a worthless reporting tool? Take a look at Idaho’s version of this, that will give you perspective.

### 5/5 — Simple, informative, and easy to use

*2022-11-23, version 1.1*

Not sure about why so many complaints about the new version, other than it is just different than the old and people want to resist change (I get that).
I think the new version is easier to use and provides better information faster than the old, which was really dated. Kudos for stepping up.

### 5/5 — Please add Mile Markers

*2022-01-22, version 1.0.12*

Love the app but please add mile markers, that would make my life so much easier! Thank you!

### 5/5 — Great upgrade, easy to navigate

*2022-01-02, version 1.0.11*

All these reviewers that gave it a bad rating must struggle with change. It’s a perfectly user-friendly upgrade. Just take a few moments to learn the new way around rather than opening it up and throwing a fit because it’s not exactly the same as the old one.

### 5/5 — Very useful app

*2021-12-27, version 1.0.11*

I wasn’t a user of the old app so i can’t compare. But I am very happy to have this on my phone now. It was easy to set up my favorite road cameras to view and then toggle between different views. The overlays are great to change what you want to focus on. For the complaints about not seeing the key, there is a large key icon at the bottom of the map. Yes it’s a pop up, but I understand for space reasons why it’s necessary.

### 4/5 — Overall a good start

*2021-12-13, version 1.0.11*

I wasn’t a big user of the old app, but this looks like an improvement to me and I’m likely to use it more often. I just have a few quibbles with how the legend is implemented.

First, it would be helpful if it could be parked on the screen, off to the side somewhere, and could be toggled on or off as the user gains familiarity with the various colors, etc. As it stands, I have to go back and forth between the legend and the map several times to figure out which route to take.

Second, the legend would be simpler to decipher if it were context-sensitive, showing only the layers that the user has turned on.

Third, the legend is dismissed by tapping an orange checkmark, which isn’t consistent with the rest of the app, where you can just tap anywhere on the map to make an overlay go away.

All in all, good work!

### 4/5 — Huge Improvement

*2021-10-19*

This updated app is light years ahead of the old version. Far more intuitive and user friendly. Super simple to get text descriptions of what to expect as well as weather in the area.

**Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback and four-star rating! The new app has a lot of great functionality. If you have questions about any of the new features, email us at MT511@iteris.com, and we will do our best to help.
