### 2/5 — Doesn’t always work

*2018-11-05, version 4.7*

I like the idea of this app, as I was looking for an easy way to track what I eat. Taking photos has proven the best option for me. I’ve tried other apps that log calories but I get too hung up on accuracy and lose focus on the big picture. The app is super buggy and doesn't always work. Seems to be getting worse with the iOS upgrades and makes me think this app isn’t actively being developed anymore.

### 3/5 — Can’t log meals, then can’t log in

*2018-04-14, version 4.7*

UPDATE: Because of the swift response of the developers, it’s possible to log in. There are still some problems but their team have been on top of fixing the problem. I also appreciate them promptly responding to support messages. Good to see they aren’t neglecting the app!

ORIGINAL:
Today the app became absolutely unusable.
-First, couldn’t log meals. Got instead an error message
-Then, after reinstalling the app, couldn’t log in via Facebook or with email&password
-Then couldn't reset password because Meallogger can’t process the actual sending of the instruction email after I’ve typed in my email and pressed reset. So I’m not receiving reset email (yes I’ve checked the spam folder)

There have been glitches, which were ignored by the developers since the last update, but now the app is completely useless. The only reason I kept using this app is I have 2 years’ worth of logs; and with no way to export data, I wanted to stick with the app for the information I unfortunately already entrusted with it.

Please fix the app!

### 3/5 — Daily, weekly, monthly summary of food groups? Half portions?

*2016-10-17, version 4.5*

Easy to use. I am not terribly interested in photographing every bite of food, but I am interested in logging the food groups I have eaten. It would be really useful if this app provided a daily summary of how many servings of all the food groups I've eaten, and even weekly and monthly averages and trends.

Also, if it allowed half servings of all the food groups instead of just some of them (even allowing manual entry of # of servings in addition to +/- entry).

### 2/5 — No privacy options.

*2016-07-22, version 4.4.1*

This app has some unique features and a lot of potential -- but there is NO attention to privacy control. At all.

The food tracking system is great. It uses photos and "servings": you mark how many servings of grains, vegetables, etc. are in your meal.

You can create as many entries as you want for any meal type, so if you eat 3 or 4 snacks a day? No problem, they'll each be a separate photo post. And there's no emphasis on calories, which is fantastic (though the info is there if you do want it).

But there's not a word of transparency about data sharing!

Each food entry looks exactly like a social media post, with likes and comments ... and absolutely no indication of where it's going or who can see it.

I would have been satisfied with a blanket "Opt out of all sharing" toggle, under Settings. At least I could still use the food logging and nutrition parts of the app. But there isn't even that.

If you join a Group, other group members can definitely see your meal posts. But if you change your mind, there is NO apparent way to leave a group. Not on the group page, or under account settings ... within the app OR on the website. And you can't just hide your posts, either.

This could be a really simple, helpful, usable food tracker -- as soon as the devs address its huge neglect of privacy.

Other than that, there are a few general changes that would be nice:

More options on custom nutrition plans. Let us have maximum servings of a thing, not just minimum servings. And "X servings of (multiple food groups)," so I can have, for instance, fish OR meat OR dairy and still meet my targets.

Water measurements: ideally custom glass sizes, or at least being able to add "X number of oz/ml" throughout the day.

### 3/5 — Update!

*2016-02-21, version 4.2.2*

Performance stability
Health app sync!

### 3/5 — Really great app, but could use a bit of work

*2016-01-09, version 4.0*

Edit: The UI issues are real issues, it turns out. The concept is great, but there are errors and stuff that make this harder to use than it should be.

Original: I used to use calorie counting apps frequently, getting decent results, but I sometimes found that too cumbersome/tedious, particularly when eating out. And sometimes the focus on calories in/calories out/nutrient counting meant having days where I ate less than wholesome food (processed) that looked deceptively ok when plugged into an app (within calorie budget, added vitamins in ingredients, etc.). I switched to counting servings of food types, but was left wondering about energy balance. So being able to estimate calories consumed from servings of food types is magical!

The UI is less than intuitive, though. It took a minute to figure out where to find the calorie estimates, and tracking exercise isn't nearly as easy as tracking food.

I wish I could export calorie estimate data to HealthKit and possibly import exercise data. I also wish for further customization of nutrition plans (for different sized bodies and needs like pregnancy or breastfeeding).

But this is a mostly a great app. Thanks!

### 2/5 — cloud only?

*2015-09-16, version 3.6.1*

Deleted the app after 2 seconds, because apparently it doesn't work without account. Why do I need an account to log the food I eat? I think logging on to a network should be optional, not mandatory.

### 3/5 — Update?

*2015-05-02, version 3.6.1*

The basic idea behind the app is great but is so in desperate need of an upgrade. App crashes, pictures won't load, etc. Very archaic simulation. You can tell there's been not update for almost a YEAR! Wow.

### 3/5 — Stability update?

*2015-04-11, version 3.6.1*

This is a great app but it seems to be getting slower and less stable. It crashes for me a lot, so I end up giving up and not entering food as often. Currently there haven't been any updates since June 2014 so I hope support is still available and working on this app because I really like it when it's working smoothly!

### 4/5 — Pretty good

*2014-09-12, version 3.6.1*

It definitely serves its purpose. However, I'd like for it to send me notifications so that I could remember to log down my food (like I have for a water app).

### 4/5 — It is a good start for a meal tracker app

*2014-08-08, version 3.6.1*

I've been looking at meal tracking apps for a couple days and even though I read the one review that was here, I decided to try this one. I've been using it for 2 days and unless I can find one that is actually better, I may stick with it.

The two problems I have found so far are the inability to fix an entry and not having photos save to the photo roll. It really does not matter if I label dinner as a snack, but I do like to be accurate when I record things. I'll be showing this to my trainer and I don't like that I'm going to have to point out that my dinner was labelled as a snack instead of dinner.

I would like to be able to reuse photos instead of having to photograph the same bottle of protein powder twice a day. If it records photos so that I can reuse them, I have not figured it out yet.

Things I like:
The flexibility of what I can list or enter.
I can change the time entry if I am not able to enter stuff in real time.
I can retake the photos.
I can record protein and carb grams at the time I list the entry. My first complaint is because I can't enter it later. I would like to add a line for fat grams. I can't tell if that flexibility is built in the app yet.
There is flexibility in the description area. I can write whatever I need to say.
I can make one random note entry each day. Like today I had dental work so I could not actually eat for a few hours- I could mention that in a note.
I am probably going to stick with this app because in theory I can share my data with my trainer. I have not tried to set that up yet, so no feedback on that feature yet.
This is a great start to a meal tracker app!

### 3/5 — Needs improvement

*2014-06-20, version 3.6.1*

I love the concept if this app but it needs improvement... There are to many bugs that need to be fixed and it is also kind of slow. I liked the app the eatery more than this one and I hope you guys can improve MealLogger

### 4/5 — Great App

*2014-03-04, version 3.4.2*

I really love this app! Just a couple of suggestions:

There should be a way to scroll through your pics when you are viewing your meals by day or week.

Also, it would be great to be able to zoom into people's pix.

Otherwise, I'm really happy with it, and I've found it really helps me stay on track. Thanks!

### 4/5 — Weekly summary

*2014-02-09, version 3.4*

When viewing my weekly summary it'd be nice if my "text only" posts can be read in the overview, rather than there just being an image of a camera

### 2/5 — Reliability Issues

*2014-02-03, version 3.4*

Sometimes this app double posts and when you delete the extra data you lose all of it. I need complete data accuracy to share with my medical professional. I don't see an easy data export feature, and when I tried to use the data sharing feature there is no way to pick my medical professional.

### 4/5 — Awesome!!

*2013-11-17, version 3.2*

Perfectly simple and basic, which means I use it!
Would love it if fat percentage was added but it is wonderful!

### 4/5 — Its good, but...

*2013-11-14, version 3.2*

On my app, the 'Like'👍 & 'comment'💬 button doesnt work. Would like an update on that. Otherwise, I love it, I use it with My Fitness Pal as the calorie counter. It helps me remember my healthy recipes 😉

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Can’t Save Anything

*2019-10-14, version 4.7.2*

I am trying to save a post and the “Save” button overlaps the very top right of the screen on the status bar. I can see the button but am unable to click it so I can’t save anything.

### 1/5 — Useless

*2018-12-07, version 4.7*

It wouldn’t let me create an account, so I deleted it!

### 1/5 — Need Account to use

*2016-03-03, version 4.2.2*

Have to sign up for an account to use. No thanks.

### 1/5 — Need update

*2015-11-15, version 3.6.1*

Seems like app not updated for long time which has lead to slowness of app overall and frequent crashes. Hopefully developer can update the app.

### 1/5 — Unreliable

*2015-04-05, version 3.6.1*

The app is crashing

### 1/5 — Disappointed

*2013-09-30, version 3.1*

Can't register or sign in. Keeps timing out. Thought it was my internet? But everything else is connecting and working. Very disappointed!

### 1/5 — synchronisation completed bar

*2013-09-11, version 3.0.2*

Since the latest update the screen constantly flashes up with 'synchronisation completed' every five seconds pausing the screen and making everything take ages to load. The app was good before this started to happen. What's going on??

### 1/5 — The latest update is AWFUL!!!!!

*2013-08-15, version 3.0*

Why can't I see my entries by day or week anymore? The single chronological feed is awful and not at all useful. I'm going to be switching to another app.

### 1/5 — Ughh

*2013-08-14, version 3.0*

After updating this app I lost everything !!!!!!

### 1/5 — Fail

*2013-08-13, version 3.0*

I updated the app and lost all my logs! Horrible app.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Great app!

*2022-09-04, version 4.7.4*

Perfect app for tracking food intake and connecting with my coach.

### 5/5 — Love it!

*2016-02-05, version 4.2.2*

I love this app! Started using it 1.5 months ago and I dragged a couple of friends for accountability :-) I lost 12 pounds. Sure, I worked hard BUT if someone is going to see everything I eat... Well they did it for me! I wanted to eat better ;-) plus, I hate counting calories! I eat everything, watch my portions, take pictures, and I am held accountable. Thank you MealLogger, didn't know I've been waiting for something like this - but looks like I did! Brilliant idea!

### 5/5 — Get this app

*2015-02-01, version 3.6.1*

A fun and motivating way to get healthy. With this app I will not give up as easily as I did using calorie counter apps such as Lose It or Fitness Pal. And I love how you can join groups and view/like people's meals. Highly recommend.

### 5/5 — Excellent App!

*2014-12-17, version 3.6.1*

Just what I was looking for - easy to use, great layout, and online editing with fast syncing. Awesome.

### 5/5 — Best app

*2014-09-18, version 3.6.1*

Love this app. I can record and take snap shot I my food. It would be great if this app can also link to mapmyrun app to capture my exercises too.

### 5/5 — Awesome!

*2014-04-23, version 3.5*

Searched App Store for over 4 hours and down loaded approx 4 till found this one and it won hands down. Has everything and super simple to use.
Take photos - review daily weekly timeline - create groups - join groups - choose who and what you share.
The only thing would like as administrator is to view others timeline and share the summary.
Congratulations this makes food journaling super easy!

### 5/5 — Great app

*2014-02-11, version 3.4*

I used to have an app called the Eatery, this one is wayy better. This app is really great because I hate counting calories and snapping pictures of the food you ate is so much less time consuming. I want to eat healthy, not count my calories but there is a calorie counter that you can turn on if you want. You can link to your friends and see what they're eating or just follow a random group and see what everyone else is eating. I love it and am so glad I came across this app.

### 5/5 — Love

*2013-10-10, version 3.1.1*

I really like this app. It's great for snapping photos of your food, so you can see what you been eating and eat healthier. I really like how you can turn off the calories and nutrition, and how you can record your weight. The only thing that could be better is the design and structure of the app, the functions are very good.

### 5/5 — Works & looks great

*2013-10-10, version 3.1.1*

I downloaded 5-6 similar apps that allowed you to keep a photo journal and this one is by far the best, and the only one I have kept!

### 5/5 — Brilliant!!!!

*2013-09-13, version 3.0.2*

Love this app! Really makes you think about what your eating. Great inspiration from others using it. Everyone's really friendly and helpful!
