## What is Meddah?

Meddah is an e-book reader for the books you already own — read them with your eyes, or listen to them. Add EPUB, MOBI/AZW, PDF and TXT files from the Files app; Meddah reads them aloud paragraph by paragraph, highlights the word being spoken, and picks up where you left off.

READING ALOUD
• Offline narration with the Apple voices on your device: male or female, adjustable speed
• Optional Google Cloud Text-to-Speech with your own API key for WaveNet and Chirp voices, with a monthly character counter and limit
• Lock screen and headphone controls, background playback, sleep timer, automatic pause for calls
• Moves on to the next chapter by itself; tap any paragraph to start reading from there

THE READING EXPERIENCE
• Text with bold, italics, quotes, lists and images
• Light, Sepia, Dark and Black themes; eight typefaces, size, line spacing and margins
• Hierarchical contents, in-book search, chapter and progress indicators
• Bookmarks, highlights in four colours, notes, and note export

SCANNED PDFs
• PDFs whose text layer is broken or missing are read again from the page images with on-device text recognition, so Turkish letters come out right — no internet needed

ON EVERY DEVICE
• Your reading position, bookmarks and notes sync across your own devices through iCloud

SHARING AND BACKGROUND MUSIC
• Turn a line you like into a quote card in five styles and share it
• Quiet piano while you read (Satie, Debussy, Bach, Mozart; public domain) or rain, fireplace and sea sounds; you can add your own music files

PRIVACY
Your books stay on your device. Meddah asks for no account and collects no data. Google voices are used only if you enter your own key; in that case the text being read is sent to Google to generate the audio.

Supported formats: EPUB 2/3, MOBI, PRC, AZW, AZW3 (without DRM), PDF, TXT.

## Version history (last 4 releases)

### 1.3 — 2026-10-05

• Meddah now has its own Turkish voice. It runs entirely on your device: no internet, no account, no per-character cost, and your book's text never leaves your phone
• The voice ships with the app, so there is nothing to download; it reads on a plane or with no signal
• Settings lets you switch between three engines: Meddah Voice, Apple and Google
• Reading speed is adjustable from 0.5x to 2x with the new voice as well

### 1.2 — 2026-09-21

• Tabs at the bottom: Library, Notes and Settings. Leaving a book no longer stops the narration — the mini player above the tab bar keeps it going and takes you back with one tap
• Every bookmark, highlight and note in one searchable list that jumps straight to the paragraph
• A new playback bar: a progress bar plus buttons that show the current voice, sleep timer and music
• Apple voices are now listed as the ones actually installed on your device, with a pointer to download a more natural one
• Background ambience replaced with real field recordings: rain, fireplace, sea
• The paragraph menu no longer closes while the narration moves on

### 1.1 — 2026-09-19

• Your reading position, bookmarks and notes now sync across your devices through iCloud
• The app speaks English as well as Turkish
• Help, feedback and App Store rating links in Settings
• Siri and Shortcuts: say "Continue reading in Meddah" to pick up where you left off

### 1.0 — 2026-09-19

No release notes.
